Re: K3 Scan Rate

The RATE button gives you a choice of scan rates but it would be nice
if there was a wider range of scan speeds available. Depending on how
much band you want to cover, how crowded it is and what you're
scanning for, you might want anything from very slow to very fast,
with a lot of variability in between. If you could adjust the scan
rate interactively while scanning, that would be super.

Also would be nice if the dwell time was user selectable (i.e., the
amount of time a scan will pause on an active freq before resuming the
scan).

I don't think many people use the scanner on HF but I have found it
very handy on the K2 looking for CW signals. Haven't tried it on the
K3 yet, but from the manual description it looks pretty much the same.

Do you have a BNC coupler such that you could remove the W1 while still
leaving all the BNC cables in place? Have you tried placing the W1
between the rig and a dummy load to see if the noise level comes up
compared to the dummy load alone?

W1 and QRN

I recently built the W1 Wattmeter/SWR Bridge to use in tuning my antenna.

I've noticed that whenever I have it in-line between my K1 and the antenna, I hear a dramatic increase in receiver noise level. The S-meter on the K1 goes from 2 bars to 4 bars. This happens whether I have the W1 turned on or turned off, and happens on both 20 and 40 meters.

The noise level is lower when the antenna is out of tune (it's a manual trap antenna that requires me to manually change a wander lead and change the length of a counterpoise when I switch bands). When I first switch bands, the noise is down at 2-3 bars. Once I tune up the antenna with the wander lead and counterpoise, the noise is back up to 4 bars. I believe (but can't measure) that the level of actual transmissions is higher with the W1 in the circuit than with the W1 not in the circuit.

The noise itself sounds like broad atmospheric QRN -- it's nothing specific, just loud crackling as opposed to a hum or ignition noise or a specific tone.

The only other thing I can say is that I have the W1 connected to the K1 by a 3' BNC to BNC cable. The cable is coiled to sit on my desk. My antenna is not that far from power lines, telephone lines, and cable lines (about 10' at closest point, but positioned so that it can't fall on any of the lines), and the W1 is not that much further away from the antenna (the antenna is mounted to the house just outside the window of my shack).

Any thoughts as to why the noise level would be dramatically louder with the W1 in the line? Could I have done something wrong in building the W1? It seems to be working correctly.

Obviously, I can just take the W1 out of the antenna line to eliminate the noise, but I'm curious as to why I would be getting this effect.

Is it possible to vary the speed of scanning on the K3, please?

I am trying to set up my K3 for "Channel Hopping" the 60m frequencies
and so far can only do it with a too fast scan rate.

I agree that the 50Hz jumps do feel like much bigger schwacks in the
lower bandwidths but I don't feel them un-reasonably so... How narrow
do you wish things to get? 25Hz? 10Hz? 1Hz? Personally I don't know
what the right value is but I do think that 1Hz increments would be too
"smooth". To the point of SLOW.

I agree... But when I asked for the ability to erase memories Wayne
told me he didn't understand why I would want that ability when I could
just over write the memory location with something else. But when he
made it so a lot of people started taking a lot more liberties with
memories and really liked that new feature.

Personally I'm more for being able to NULL out CW memories but I suppose
I can always just set them to only send "E".

Granted there are much higher priority things and so far I've been very
pleased with Wayne's prioritizing so I'm content to just leave things in
his hands. Although I do hope that now that the Sub RX is on its way to
becoming an item that the DVR isn't too far off. :)

Why, Roy? Surely if you do not want to use the PF1 and PF2 buttons you
could just fill them with the firmware versions. Leaving them blank
does not serve any useful purpose and I do feel there are other things
on the list that could be given higher priority.

Please tell us the reason you need PF1 and PF2 to be blank.

I bought it because of the price and the small size and weight. When I
go on a trip I can throw it in a suitcase with the K3 and still have
room left over for clothes.

The only complaint I have heard about the MFJ-4125 is the fan noise.
While it is definitely audible, I personally don't find it
objectionable. For those who do, placing the unit under the operating
table should solve the problem.

I did this with other rigs, but have not needed to do it with the K3.

This is what I'm doing and it's working fine. I have the K3 set up for
13mS of keying pre-delay. That is, the K3 keys the amp 13mS before the K3
produces RF. A shorter delay may work, but I'm being conservative because
I don't want to fry vacuum relays. :) Study the addenda to the K3
documentation to find the menu setting.

K3 - Scanning on 6m band

When I try to scan between two frequencies on 6m I get the message "Scanning
not allowed on this band".

I'm using the procedure described on page 37 of my manual. Am I missing
something? Why is scanning not allowed on six meters?

I am a cw guy and use the standard 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter and the 400 Hz
8-pole filter. I find them to be an excellent combination.

T1 ATU problem

Hi Elecrafters,

Something strange (?) is happening with my T1 and a Yaesu FT817 using the cable. I tune a band, work it, then go to another one.
If I return to the previous band, the yellow light is flashing instead of the green one, as it is supposed to do. Sometime, the green light flashes ok, but not always.

Any idea?

Here's a plug for the MFJ-4225MV which I'll be using with my K3 any day
now ...

It should go well because it's small and light (I guess most switchers
can make that claim though). I have not noticed any RF noise when using
it with my IC-706 or alongside my now departed FT-1000.

It has a fan that runs continuously. Fairly quiet but I don't like
hearing fans at all. I'm thinking of doing some sort of temperature
controlled mod so the fan only runs if needed.

CW Speed Control

Washington's Birthday; we could use that on President's day events.
Maybe the speed control knob should never be able to select a rational
number. In this way we could advertise the K3 difference.

I have my RS 35M on the floor also. I shorted it out once momentarily an
exciting moment. The problem is that the transistor cases that you see
sticking out of the back on the heat shield are at V+ level. If something
like a ground braid (this was my case) touches the transistors or the 12V
output terminal you have a short.

I ended up finding a cardboard box and cut the top and front off and most of
the sides off. What is left is a cardboard "back shield" with lots of
ventilation to prevent accidental connections to the wire maze I have down
there on the floor.

Without a specification for near field sensitivity below a few hundred
kHz, its difficult to be sure whether this is measuring anything useful
in terms of radiated RFI.

This discussion gives me the opportunity to correct an opinion that I
earlier posted on this list. Some long time ago I said I didn't much
like the Watson W25-XM switched supply because of RF noises which
always contrive to arrive on frequency at the worst possible
moment. I advised someone on this list to think twice before
purchasing a Watson switched supply.

However I now have the tiny Watson Power Mite NF, a surprising and
very thoughtful birthday gift from my wife. It is much quieter in RF
emissions and anyway has a front panel control to shift the switching
frequency in case hash does arrive on the operating frequency at a
bad moment. The variable-speed fan is moderately quiet too. This
supply powers the K3 (or K2) just fine.

I would prefer to have a big linear PSU, of course, but my present
operating conditions are much better served by this small and very
light switcher.

What data mode are you in - it must be DATA A (press the AFX/DATA MD
button and turn VFOB to change.
Are you in USB with both Digipan and the K3 data mode - press AFX/DATA
MD button and hold ALT to toggle between USB to LSB if you need to
change the K3.

Yes, BPSK should work, and the cable from the K3 line out jack should be
stereo. Digipan will normally use only the left channel (the tip of the
stereo plug).

K2 audio pops

I have a new k2 that is all but useless as a CW rig because of audio pops when transition from tx to rx. Pop is also present when power on or pwr off, vol setting no difference in level of pop. Worse with NR off.

There is mention of this problem in years past, but nothing recent, and no good info that I can find. Has anyone seen this in a recent production rig? any ideas?

same issue. I suggested that they consider having black housings available
for the KXV transverter line. I received a very favorable response to the
suggestion. I doubt that it is really bright on their radar screen today,
but the idea IS before them.

QSK with the K3 and Ten Tec 425 amp

I tried to interface the K3 with my 425 amp as suggested by TenTec. That
did not work.

Has someone done this and if so what did you do.

Now I have the K3 key out going to 425 PTT in and the amp if following
the keying.

In the Ten Tec method, you connect the key to to amp and have it send a
keyed signal to the key input on the K3.

Not a big deal but an interesting test.

and get some data, but not human readable. Using sound card in by
Compaq Deskpro computer.

1. Do I use a stereo or mono plug for line out? Using stereo now.

2. Do I use BPSK31 or QPSK31? Using BPSK31 now.

3. Assume the K3 should be set to DATA Mode?

What else do I need to know? I am starting at ground zero.

You can't remain in business without making a good profit.

K3 AGC settings

What can be done with the AGC is simply marvelous. I have put the THR and the SLP on the PF buttons for now.

BUT...

I can adjust these settings easily now for the band condition and the signal I am listening to. However, I don't necessarily have a good feel at all for what I have actually done. In other words...

It would be wonderful if someone, and maybe Lyle already has this, posted on the web a series of grapsh showing just what the slope looks like for each of the slp settings, and how the threshold changes with the settings.

That would be most interesting to see.

Bob,

I'd avoid Vista even if you have to buy XP.

XP Service Pack 3 works pretty well (for a bloatware microsoft product).

I have to occasionally deal with Vista on clients' computers, and
have no use for it.

The upgrade from XP isn't Vista. It's ubuntu.
