I've started to read Effective Java 2nd edition, on Safari Books Online.

The chapter on Generics:
http://www.infoq.com/resource/articles/bloch-effective-java-2e/en/resources/Bloch_Ch05.pdf

Interview with Joshua Bloch:
http://www.infoq.com/articles/bloch-effective-java-2e

I'll share some insights as I come across them.

How many are you are reading the paper book? :)

well, of course :)

Seriously,
a book as important as Effective Java should be imported properly. We
shouldn't have to get padala from the US to get a hold of it.

I'm now at Item #22 (reading on Safari) and so far, it doesn't look
very different from the 1st ed.

I think NBS, Powerbooks and other bookstores here in the Philippines will
most-likely carry less and less I.T related books as years comes by.  I
don't think I.T books are profitable anymore due to the advent of internet
and proliferation of ebooks over the internet.   Most I.T enthusiast have
access to internet and peer-to-peer application ( torrent, emule ).  E-books
are rapidshare away, or shared via torrents. The url's  and torrents are
just one google away with the right keywords.

i guess this is true not only for IT books. personally, i would rather have
the print. easier to read. wala lang ctrl+f :p

what my colleague did was to order the first effective java book years ago
through power books. dunno how many weeks it took, but it was delivered.

the problem with IT books though is that most are easily deprecated, with
such a fast paced industry. buy a book about eclipse 3.0, then in a few
months there's already a 3.3 out (hypothetical only, of course who buys an
eclipse book? :p )! not as profitable i guess as in the other industries.

I think IT book are not profitable. Having print version is always good but
most IT books are madaling mabahaw.

Do you pick VB6, EJB 1.0, .Net 1.0? I can still see these books in the
bookstore.

Sana will sell something like:

PLoPD 1,2,3,4,N
POSA 1, 2, 3, N
TAoCP 1,2 3, & 4
TCP/IP Illustrated 123
Effective Java, C++
GoF
Programming Pearls

In the case of VB6, I believe it's still a best-seller, as many (if not
most) computer schools are still teaching VB6 at this time (and it makes me
sad--they're still stuck with a 10 year old language when many versions have
already come past it).

Anyway, going back to the topic, I agree that IT books get obsolete pretty
quick nowadays. Still, even though IT books get obsolete quick, if they get
their way into schools, they can become highly profitable (teacher requires
students to each have a copy of the book.)
