Edges chopped off on burned DVD

I have some video I generated using Celestia.  I captured video as
640x480 OGG Theora at 29.97 fps,  then imported it into Kino.  After
editing, I exported as mpeg for qdvdauthor, then laid our my menus and
chaptere and burned a DVD.

If I play the VOB file with xine or mplayer, it looks fine.  mplayer
does tell me it is prescaling the video to 720x540 to get the 4:3 aspect
ratio correct (it *is* 4:3).

But when I play back the DVD on my analog TV, I've lost part of the
edges on all four sides.  I can tell its missing because Celestia has
text displayed in those areas and its chopped off.

If I play it on a high-end upscaling DVD player on my 50-inch plasma TV,
the sides are fine, but the top is still missing several lines.

What am I doing wrong?

roland

This sounds more like a question for the dvdauthor mailing list. What is
the aspect adn resolution you see in the dvdauthor.xml file ? what is
mplayer telling you about the video ( -identify flag )

I am not sure, but I think everything is just fine!  You are running
into something called 'overscan'.  From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan:

Overscan is extra image area around the four edges of a video image
that is not normally seen by the viewer. It exists because
television sets in the 1930s through 1970s were highly variable in
how the video image was framed within the cathode ray tube (CRT).

Read the wiki page for more details - you may find them helpful.

You can get an approximation for this phenonema by using the "Visible
Region" option under tools.  I don't know if the visible region follows
the conventions mentioned in the wikipedia article.

I hoped this helps.

If the above isn't clear, feel free to ask for more details.

I assume you are referring to the files which get used by dvdauthor to
go onto the DVD.  The report 720x480 with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

This is probably unrelated but according to DVD spec NTSC mp2 is not a
requirement. Most player will play it but some might have issues with
it. Funny thing is that for PAL it is a requirement.

I learned that after working on QDVDAuthor for about three years. I will
yet have to change my menu creation to use a52 audio, which is a
requirement in both NTSC and PAL.

Besides this your video looks okay.

Varol :)

Thanks, I asked the question on the dvdauthor mailing list and they
pointed me to the same place.  I've subsequently padded my video then
rescaled back down to the right sized to avoid chopping off the edges of
the text.  Thanks!
