Most paths you specify to GDB are where-GDB-found-the-file paths, not
what-was-in-the-debug-info paths. So if you apply set substitute-path
> the command -var-create - * &(x)
> uses a * as the frame, which tells GDB to use the current frame and thread
> for this variableObject, permanently. What that means is that when
> you do a -var-evaluate-expression of that same varObject, GDB will
> evaluate it in the context of the proper thread and frame; no
> need to do a -thread-select.
>
> Don't forget to properly use -var-update if the memory might have changed.
>
> As a note, with var-create, instead of using * for the frame, you can use @;
> this will tell GDB to change the frame (and the thread?) for that variable
> to the current frame at the time of your -var-evaluate-expression. I haven't
> used that form, so I'm not very familiar with it.

FWIW, @-varobjs are documented in the GDB manual, CVS version, since yesterday.
>
> Don't forget to properly use -var-update if the memory might have changed.
>
> As a note, with var-create, instead of using * for the frame, you can use @;
> this will tell GDB to change the frame (and the thread?) for that variable
> to the current frame at the time of your -var-evaluate-expression. I haven't
> Subject: [cdt-dev] MI behaviour - var-evaluate-expression
>
> Hi,
>
> I noticed that -var-evaluate-expression is called for variables that
> could exist in other threads than the current one and wondered if this
> is a bug or not (I've read the MI section in the gdb manual but
> couldn't really find a proper spec for an MI controller)? So as an
> example - if a user selects a thread in the thread list, CDT calls
> -thread-select n, followed later by -var-create - * &(x) (for array
> variables) in that thread, switches back to thread 1, then calls
> -var-evaluate-expression for the array variable in the selected
> thread. So what's happening is gdb is being asked to evaluate a
> variable which exists in another thread. Normally this may be fine but
> in a multi-core environment the other thread could use a different
> address space in which case reading that variable will fail unless the
> thread is switched to before.
>
> Apologies if this makes no sense whatsoever...
>

Thanks for this hint - it is exactly what I've been looking for.
Now the parser checks for attribute 'config', and uses its value as
file name:

      <errorparser class="si.isystem.regexerrparser.RegExErrorParser"

This seems more readable to me than the colon syntax. I'll upload the
new version shortly.

> Hi,
>
> regarding the additional parameter, you can do that already:
> If you specify the argument as a colon separated suffix to the class
> name, like e.g.
>
> <errorparser
> .properties"/>
>
> and the RegExErrorParser class implements IExecutableExtension, you will
> receive the argument
> in a call to setInitializationData() when a new instance is created.
>> Subject: [cdt-dev] regular expression parser
>>
>> Hi,
>>
>> I've implemented a regular expressions parser plug-in and posted it to
>> eclipse.tools.cdt newsgroop.
>> (http://www.isystem.com/content/5653/288/)
>>
>> It was suggested to contribute it to CDT. It is not a problem (it is
>> licensed under EPL anyway), but I'd like to solve one technical issue
>> first.
>> Currently the name of the file containing regular expressions is
>> hardcoded, which means that only one such parser may exist in the
>> system. I think it would be better to have a parameter in the
>> extension point, for example 'config':
>>
>> <extension id=...
>> name="RegEx Error Parser - GCC ARM"
>> point="org.eclipse.cdt.core.ErrorParser">
>> <errorparser class="si.isystem.regexerrparser.RegExErrorParser"
>> config="regEx/gccArmExpresions.properties"/>
>> <-- NEW
>> </extension>
>>
>> Value of the 'config' attribute specifies config file in this example.
>> Parameter may also be useful for other error parsers.
>>
>> Should I fill in an enhancement request for this attribute?
>> Are there any other suggestions?
>>
>> Regards,

Hi,

regarding the additional parameter, you can do that already:
If you specify the argument as a colon separated suffix to the class
name, like e.g.

<errorparser
class="si.isystem.regexerrparser.RegExErrorParser:regEx/gccArmExpresions
.properties"/>

and the RegExErrorParser class implements IExecutableExtension, you will
receive the argument
in a call to setInitializationData() when a new instance is created.

HTH,
> Subject: [cdt-dev] regular expression parser
>
> Hi,
>
> I've implemented a regular expressions parser plug-in and posted it to
> eclipse.tools.cdt newsgroop.
>
> It was suggested to contribute it to CDT. It is not a problem (it is
> licensed under EPL anyway), but I'd like to solve one technical issue
> first.
> Currently the name of the file containing regular expressions is
> hardcoded, which means that only one such parser may exist in the
> system. I think it would be better to have a parameter in the
> extension point, for example 'config':
>
> <extension id=...
> name="RegEx Error Parser - GCC ARM"
> point="org.eclipse.cdt.core.ErrorParser">
> <errorparser class="si.isystem.regexerrparser.RegExErrorParser"
> config="regEx/gccArmExpresions.properties"/>
> <-- NEW
> </extension>
>
> Value of the 'config' attribute specifies config file in this example.
> Parameter may also be useful for other error parsers.
>
> Should I fill in an enhancement request for this attribute?
> Are there any other suggestions?
>
> Regards,
>

I have a problem doing something that I though would be very simple. I
have found that other people have discussed this problem in the past,
even that something may have been done about it. However, I am
currently using a much later version of eclipse than when the fix was
patched and I seem to still have the problem. Is it something I am doing
wrong? Or does the problem still exist and do I have to use a work around?

Past Discussion:
http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.tools.cdt/msg12343.html
http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.tools.cdt/msg13166.html
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=156187

Using Eclipse Ganymede Version: 3.4.1
Build id: M20080911-1700

In Windows Vista

I get multiple target pattern error when using Cygwin Tool Chain and
adding include paths. For instance my .d file looks like:

src/HelloIncTest.d src/HelloIncTest.o: ../src/HelloIncTest.cpp \

C:/Users/Entecho/Desktop/Programming/EclipseWorkspace/HelloIncTest/Inc/myheader.h

C:/Users/Entecho/Desktop/Programming/EclipseWorkspace/HelloIncTest/Inc/myheader.h:

I added this path using the Project-Properties-Paths and Symbols -
Include Paths. I added to all configurations and languages as a
workspace path i.e. in this section of options it says: /HelloIncTest/Inc

In the C/C++ Build - Settings options it says under All Options:

-I"C:\Users\Entecho\Desktop\Programming\EclipseWorkspace\HelloIncTest\Inc"
-O0 -g3 -Wall -c -fmessage-length=0

and under Directories it has

"${workspace_loc:/HelloIncTest/Inc}"

Do I have to use a work around or should Eclipse now be managing the
windows paths and Cygwin make/build process correctly?

Any help much appreciated.

Kind Regards
This automatically generated message signals that Eike Stepper has
nominated Victor Roldan Betancort as a Committer on the CDO component of
the modeling.emf project. The reason given is as follows:

Vik has shown a constant engagement with high-quality results in various
CDO areas. His work in the user interface area was always highly
appreciated and it is time to honor this adequately. Vik will be our main
UI responsible in the future.
portal for the votes to be properly recorded. The voting will continue
until either all 4 existing Committers have voted or until they have been
given enough time to vote, even if they do not do so (defined as at least
one week). Victor Roldan Betancort must receive at least three +1s and no
-1s for a successful election.

Eligible Committers must cast their votes through their My Foundation
portal page (do NOT just reply to this email; your vote will not be
correctly recorded unless you use the portal):

    Simon Mc Duff
    Eike Stepper
    Martin Taal
    Stefan Winkler

*NOTE*: Successful elections are left open for a maximum of 60 days to
allow for processing of paperwork. After that time the election will be
expired, regardless of its current status. Should papework processing on
the part of the candidate take more time than allowed, a new election will
newsgroup.

However, *No symbol "new" in current context.* is not an error. It is
caused by Eclipse trying to provide context information on the symbol
under the mouse cursor. It does this in a dumb fashion by just trying to
perform a (gdb) lookup on any word that is under the cursor (it could be
a comment, a symbol, anything). If a valid response is received, it
displays it. You are seeing gdb report that it is not a vlid symbol.
>
> I installed setup for ARM hardware using YAGARTO and Eclipse.
>
> I have interface between eclips and ARM as
>   PC Eclips -> CDT debug -> BDI 3000 -> ARM Board
>
> when I debug it I got the error as
> *No symbol "new" in current context.*
> Has anyone of you came across this error earlier.
> For your reference attached the log of console window here. I am not
> gettting where I am going wrong can you help me to solve the issue with
> the ARM hardware debug.

I have a managed C++ project with the two default configurations called "Debug" and "Release". When I build the project, the target executable file is created along with some intermediate files in a subdirectory that is called - guess - "Debug" or "Release". I would like to change the default directories to "Build\MinGW_Debug" and "Build\MinGW_Release" respectively, because I'm using other compilers, too.
Subject: [ve-dev] Changes being proposed for JEM bundle structure
...

As I hope you know, the JEE Tools project took over stewardship of
JEM a couple of years ago.

We've had a bug/feature request to un-nest some embedded jars, so
that people can compile against the binary version of those bundles and
jars and not have to have the complete source tree present.
This is, sort of, a well known PDE limitation, where it works a
little differently that what a pure OSGi runtime would allow.

I think it is feasible to un-nest these jars, given OSGi, compared
to the original Eclipse Plugin model, which was used when this JEM code
was first designed and developed. That is, we'd refactor the nested jars
out of the current bundle, and make them bundles too. That makes PDE
happy, and the bundles can still be used as ordinary jars (and the OSGi
directives ignored).

If this works, it will be nothing but good news for projects that
pre-req all of WTP anyway (not sure what VE does) but for projects who
"pick and choose" exactly which bundles to get for their feature or
products, then they will have to be aware of the fact that they need to
get two additional bundles from JEM. Their code should not have to change
at all ... the bundles just have to be present (they used to be present by
virtue of being nested inside of other jars, which they no longer will
be).

You can follow along in this bug, if you are interested.
        https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=256441

The "rub" is that we would like to provide this new structure in
our Ganymede SR2 release. Normally, restructuring should be avoided for a
maintenance release, but since there's no real change of code or
dependencies, I think it is reasonable to propose.

Let us know if you object, or if are overjoyed because it will
make VE easier to build :)
Comments in the bugs are fine, and once it's ready, if any of you
can give it an early test, that would be very helpful.

        Thanks,

Hi Marko,

I think that many users would use generic error parser and not only for C/C++ but for other languages and other contexts as well. We would definitely do as we use a number of tools for static analysis, compilation, unit testing, preprocessing, building etc. Most of these tools unaware of CDT GNU C/C++ Error Parser or other parsers provided by CDT. Still it is very desirable to get error markers in the editor and people are writing shell scripts to reformat the messages.

On the other hand, there are tons of bugs in bugzilla with complains that error parsers do not perfectly handle some particular error messages. Hey, just give people a way to tweak error parser to their special tool.

On Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 5:27 AM, Marko Klopcic <markok@...> wrote:

<extension id=...
name="RegEx Error Parser - GCC ARM"
          point="org.eclipse.cdt.core.ErrorParser">
  <errorparser class="si.isystem.regexerrparser.RegExErrorParser"
               config="regEx/gccArmExpresions.properties"/>    <-- NEW
</extension>

Value of the 'config' attribute specifies config file in this example.
Parameter may also be useful for other error parsers.

GUI to edit the settings would be good. What about adding in Error Parsers tab in properties a button Edit where you could set it up?

Should I fill in an enhancement request for this attribute?
Are there any other suggestions?

Yes, if you are serious about that, I'd suggest to open a bug in bugzilla and work with a committer to make the code agreeable to current CDT standards. You might want to take a look at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Getting_started_with_CDT_development.

Thanks,

Andrew
