Equinox and Platform bundles moving to Foundation 1.1
In the Ganymede release, many Equinox
and Platform bundles targeted the J2ME Foundation 1.0 class library profile.
For the next release, several bundles are considering moving up to the
Foundation 1.1 profile. This is under consideration for a number of reasons:

- The Foundation 1.0 profile is
very old - proposed in 1999, initially released in 2001 and reached end
of life in 2006. It is no longer maintained, and we believe most J2ME users
have moved up to at least Foundation profile 1.1 to take advantage of bug
fixes and new capabilities
- The OSGi R4.2 specification
is releasing a new OSGi Minimum Execution Environment 1.2 which is a subset
of J2SE 1.4 and Foundation 1.1. The OSGi R4.2 APIs (e.g org.osgi.* packages)
will require the OSGi Minimum Execution Environment 1.2 or higher. This
will prevent running on a pure Foundation 1.0 profile class library. Equinox
is planning to adopt the R4.2 APIs in the Galileo release.
- We have a real need for some
of the APIs in Foundation 1.1, particularly java.net.URI, and the ability
to chain exceptions
- There are no freely available
Foundation 1.0 class libraries that we know of, which makes it difficult
for our committers to validate that we can in fact run in this environment

We would like to know if anyone still
has a need for running on Foundation 1.0, and whether there is any concern
about moving some Equinox and Platform bundles up to Foundation profile
1.1. Note that this does not imply a wholesale move of all bundles to Foundation
1.1. We only intend to move up bundles as the need arises. However,
because bundles such as org.eclipse.equinox.common are looking to move,
it will effectively end the ability to run non-trivial Equinox/OSGi-based
applications in a Foundation 1.0 environment in the Galileo release. Please
provide feedback on this proposed move in the following bug:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=257109

Thanks,
  >--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

------------------
Discussion Topic
------------------

Platform Workspace:
- (as posted to eclipse-dev):
  - Olivier T. raised bugs against some plug-ins, pointing out that wrong
types
   and methods are used
- some examples:
   - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=255836
- the mentioned plug-ins depend on org.eclipse.equinox.common which has
environments set to Foundation 1.1 and J2SE-1.4. Does it mean that
environments of org.eclipse.ui.workbench and other plug-ins
can be changed to Foundation 1.1 and J2SE-1.4?

... and on a related note...

Debug:
- some bundles in the Eclipse SDK specify redundant required execution
environments (for example, J2SE-1.3 and J2SE-1.4). If a bundle runs
with 1.3, it should not specify 1.4. And more importantly, if it
requires 1.4, it should not specify that it is compatible with 1.3.
We need to understand why redundant environments are specified and
clean up the bundle definitions (for example,
  - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=255849).

JDT Core:
- need yes/no from Platform/UI and SWT for
  - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=228397
    (Add font support for StyledCellLabelProvider)
  - so that JDT/Core can decide if we do
    https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=218605
([search] SearchPattern: provide way to get the matching regions)

--------
Status
--------

JDT APT status:
- inbox, newsgroups, Bugzilla, conf calls
- fix bug 256184: fix getDeclaredType() for array type arguments

Platform Workspace:
- inbox tracking
- bug fixing for M4
- working on the 3.5 M4:
- bug 250633:
  - [Edit] Add Java Content Assist to Compare Editor, we got feedback
    from Dani, code refactoring
- new proxy settings UI is available in Preferences > General > Network
  Settings:
  - see
http://polishineclipse.blogspot.com/2008/11/new-proxy-settings-ui.html
- new API in org.eclipse.core.net.proxy.IProxyService, IProxyService#select
is the right method to get proxy settings now

Platform Text:
- simplified installation and registration of ContentAssistAction (bug
138370)
- added support that allows to contribute to all editor and ruler context
menus (bug 181916)
- reviewed and commented on enhanced compare editor features patch (bug
250633)
- adopted new @noextend tag for interfaces
- Find/Replace with regular expressions: Initial find string now uses \R
for line delimiters, not \n,\r,...

JDT Text:
- write occurrence are now painted over read occurrences
- reviewed and commented on new feature for runnable jar exporter (bug
246080)
- reviewed and commented on syntax coloring import/export patch (bug
103096)

JDT UI:
- adjusted quick fixes to changed compiler problems for abstract methods in
non-abstract class
- added preference and quick fix for dead code detection (new optional
compiler problem)
- reviewed and improved core.expressions fix (bug 234919)

JDT Core:
- deferred finding constants in attached source post 3.5
(item too risky, and no votes on bug 12044)
- improved NamingConventions after JDT/UI's feedback
- still working on constructor completions
- investigating memory taken by JavaModelCache
- inbox tracking
- bug fixing
- patches reviews

Debug:
- bug fixing

PDE:
- completed work on illegal reference detection in system libraries
  - reported several bug against Eclipse components
  - still need to work on code assist filtering
- working on documentation of API tools ant tasks (for re-use in releng
style builds)
- working on analysis and problem generation for local and anonymous types
inside the IDE
- working on exporting existing class files from IDE for in bundle/feature
export
- investigating target plaform management enhancements (UI and
infrastructure)
- bug fixing

User Assistance:
- committed work for better support of right to left languages in Intro
- working on running help system on AppServers other than Jetty

wrote:
API tooling now supports the @noextend restriction on
interfaces.
Components with API interfaces should read/follow instructions below.

** What is affected: **

API interfaces defined with the @noimplement restriction.

** Description: **

In release 3.4 (Ganymede) and earlier, API tooling supported one
restriction for API interfaces - @noimplement. This restriction indicated
an interface was not to be implemented *or* extended by clients. To allow
for more flexibility, Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) separates these concerns with
two restrictions - @noimplement and @noextend. This allows an interface
to
be extended when it is not intended to be implemented directly. For
example, in some cases clients are not allowed to implement an interface
directly, but can subclass an existing implementation and extend the base
interface/class with extra function (@see
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=230189
for a discussion and
examples).

** Action required: **

Component owners need to decide where to add @noextend tags on existing
interfaces.

To have exactly the same API contract as specified in 3.4, @noextend tags
can be added to all interfaces specified as @noimplement. However, this
can be decided on a case by case basis. Generally, the @noextend can be
omitted, as clients that extend and implement a @noimplement interface
will still be flagged with errors. However, if you would like to reserve
the right to add constants (public static final fields) to an API
interface in the future, you must add the @noextend tag. This is because
adding a field to an interface is binary incompatible if clients can
extend or implement an interface (@see
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Evolving_Java-based_APIs_2#Evolving_API_Interfaces).
Adding an API restriction to a class/interface is usually an error -
however, API tooling allows you to add @noextend tags without penalty in
release 3.5, since this specifies the same contract as in 3.4. If you were
to wait until a later release to add the additional tag, and error would
be generated.
API tooling now supports the @noextend restriction on interfaces.

This allows an interface to
be extended when it is not intended to be implemented directly. For
example, in some cases clients are not allowed to implement an interface
directly, but can subclass an existing implementation and extend the base
interface/class with extra function (@see
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=230189 for a discussion and

This allows an interface to
be extended when it is not intended to be implemented directly. For
example, in some cases clients are not allowed to implement an interface
directly, but can subclass an existing implementation and extend the base
interface/class with extra function (@see
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=230189 for a discussion and

This is because
adding a field to an interface is binary incompatible if clients can
extend or implement an interface (@see
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Evolving_Java-based_APIs_2#Evolving_API_Interfaces
).
Adding an API restriction to a class/interface is usually an error -
however, API tooling allows you to add @noextend tags without penalty in
release 3.5, since this specifies the same contract as in 3.4. If you were
to wait until a later release to add the additional tag, and error would
be generated.
A request has been made to move org.eclipse.compare
and org.eclipse.team.* into a separate feature. We are currently evaluating
the benefit of this. Please post comments in the following bug:

Preferences discussion topic:

The old deprecated org.eclipse.core.runtime.Preferences
API had two scopes (instance and default). The new preference API (IEclipsePreferences/IPreferencesService)
has an open-ended set of scopes (with instance/default/configuration/project
scopes out of the box). The question arose for people fixing their deprecated
references to Preferences what the correct new coding pattern should be.
To obtain exactly the old behaviour when getting a preference requires
two method calls on the new API (one against instance scope, and another
against default scope). The summary of the discussion is that clients should
follow the advice in the deprecation comment (use IPreferencesService.getString/getInt/etc).
This is *not* the same as the old behaviour because it consults more scopes,
but for the vast majority of clients this is the right answer. We will
review the deprecation comments to ensure they provide sufficient explanation.
Outreach
----------

- Eclipse Summit Europe is this week, Chris A. and Boris are attending
- Eclipse Demo Camp in Krakow:
  - see http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse_DemoCamps_November_2008/Krakow

------------------
Discussion Topic
------------------

UA:
- the old preferences API has been deprecated. The new API does not work
exactly the same as the old one because it does not automatically look
for default values if a preference has not been set, this is now an
extra step. Not only does this require more coding but it makes it easy
  to accidentally introduce behavior changes

Workspace:
- bug 255177 Make Compare a separate component/feature. I would like to
  hear comments on it

--------
Status
--------

JDT APT:
- inbox, newsgroups, Bugzilla, conf calls

Debug:
- enhanced breakpoint import support with import participants (bug 244059):
  - participants can control if/which existing breakpoints are replaced and
    update imported breakpoints
- bug fixing,

JDT Core:
- investigating constructor proposals
- thoughts on surfacing PDE/Tooling's access restrictions
- inbox tracking
- bug fixing

JDT UI:
- enabled Open Type in all perspectives if Java part is active
- migrated to the new NamingConventions API and gave feedback to the API
- investigated issues with SVN team provider integration

Platform Text:
- adopted new SWT.UNDERLINE_LINK style
- 3.4.2 bug reviews

Workspace:
- inbox tracking
- bug fixing for M4 and 3.4.2
- working on the 3.5 M4:
- bug 250633 - [Edit] Add Java Content Assist to Compare Editor, waiting
  for feedback from JDT/UI

PDE:
- continued work on system library access verification (bug 253693)
- improving binary import operations (bug 245565)
- support for @noextend restriction on interfaces in addition to
  @noimplement:
  - see post on cross-project-issues-dev
  - components should review API annotation tags on interfaces and add
    the new restriction where intended
- continued work on p2/build integration
- bug fixing

User Assistance:
- working on fixing intro problems in RTL languages
- investigated a problem with entities not getting resolved in XHTML files

The foundation opened 20+ bugs against platform-releng as must-dos for Galileo. In our case, they were things we already do and I closed most of them as fixed. However, I'm not sure where to assign a few of them, such as adhering to the UI Guidelines or using Babel tools to test our strings for translation. I'm not sure who these should be assigned to within the Eclipse project. Suggestions?

Sorry to contradict but there is problem. I agree that there has always
been a warning when the EE was not matching, however in the past it did
not prevent my project to compile. So something has changed in this last
build. I have opened https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=255031.
It contains a relatively simple test case.

HTH,
Daniel Megert ---12/11/2008 03:34:15 AM---Hi Pascal, the reported problem
is not new: it was always reported as a warning when

Re: [eclipse-dev] Does your workspace build?

Hi Pascal,

the reported problem is not new: it was always reported as a warning when
the specified EE (in the manifest) could not be satisfied by any of the
installed JREs/EEs. As you pointed out, the message could be improved (I
filed https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=254994 to track
this).

For M3 we added a preference (the one you've set to 'Ignore') to control
the severity of that problem because the warning was often not seen (or
ignored) by people which for example resulted in 1.5 code being released
into 1.4 projects, causing build errors in the official build. Of course
we've set the default to be 'Warning'. Now, it seems you encountered a
problem where the problem is accidentally reported as an error. Please
note
though that several projects in the SDK explicitly set this to be an error
in their project specific settings. Also, this problem (even if set to
'Error') will currently not abort the builder i.e. the builder should
still
continue to compile your project. Are you sure the compilation got
aborted?
If so, it looks like a different problem.

If you still see those unexpected errors then please file a bug report
against JDT Debug and cc me.
|[eclipse-dev] Does your workspace build? |

>--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Since I have updated to this week I build (I20081111-0800) a large number
of my projects no longer compile.
Most of them have the following error: "Build path specifies execution
environment CDC-1.1/Foundation 1.1. There are no compatible JREs in the
workspace."

First I would like to understand how to change the level of error down to
be a warning (btw my project and workspace level preferences for "No
strictly compatible JRE for execution" are set to ignore"). Second was it
an intentional change? Third, JREs are not stored in workspaces, they are
referred to from a preference page.

Thx for providing clarifications on that.

Sorry to contradict but there is problem. I agree that there has always been a warning when the EE was not matching, however in the past it did not prevent my project to compile. So something has changed in this last build. I have opened https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=255031. It contains a relatively simple test case.

Hi Pascal,

the reported problem is not new: it was always reported as a warning when
the specified EE (in the manifest) could not be satisfied by any of the
installed JREs/EEs. As you pointed out, the message could be improved (I
filed https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=254994 to track this).

Please note
though that several projects in the SDK explicitly set this to be an error
in their project specific settings. Also, this problem (even if set to
'Error') will currently not abort the builder i.e. the builder should still
continue to compile your project. Are you sure the compilation got aborted?
If so, it looks like a different problem.

If you still see those unexpected errors then please file a bug report
against JDT Debug and cc me.
