Hi there,

FYI: EVMS is about to be removed from Debian, see
http://bugs.debian.org/490787 for details.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll keep using it for now, but I guess it won't be
forever.

It's truly sad that EVMS has fallen into neglect.  I was very enthusiastic about
it when I first ran across it back in 2005, and wrote an enthusiastic review for
OSNews.  I wrote then that "EVMS rocks".  I still think it does, but I guess its
time is passing.

Andrew.

We thought the plug-in system was very cool; e.g. it was quite easy
to add a feature plugin to allow any logical volume to be tagged as an iSCSI
target, and then the plugin did all the work to configure e.g. IET to export
that LV as an iSCSI target presented LUN. Expanding a file system automatically
when the LV was expanded, was also a great enterprise feature of E-VMS
that is still unmatched (afaict) by other approaches for Linux...

I don't really know.  I've a few option to consider, but I've not
decided yet:

- step up as debian maintainer (but I'm not a DD, I don't know if I
could have.  And the the week has probably past now anyway).
- move the package into a private repository and keep using EVMS (incl.
some additional packages with evms support like yaird)
- downgrade to lvm2 & mdadm manually everywhere
- invent some clever initrd to do that transition automatically

s. above.

Well, you participated in the thread on December 2007, which more or
less obvious lead nowhere.  So you should know that there aren't any
evms developers left and this outcome should come as a surprise.

EVMS. Why switch if it still works fine?

What about them?

Still work but......how long?
It is not developed so its destiny is to die.

Says who? The last release of GNU make was done just 2 month after EVMS'
last release. When will Debian remove this one, then?

Bye...

Debian will remove it when it stops working. EVMS is still largely functional. However, there are now incompatibilities with newer Linux kernels that prevent certain functions from functioning properly. For example, EVMS is now unable to create snapshots of raid devices with recent Linux kernels. Debian removed it because of bug reports concerning this package and a lack of response from the developers.

Unless someone takes the time to revisit the code and update it to match the newer Linux kernel interfaces, it is destined to die. I personally love the software and think IBM and their developers did an outstanding job on it! However, a lack of resources (funding and people) mean this project is effectively dead.

BTW, I do want to say thank you to all the developers who kept it alive this long! They put time and effort into this project long after their jobs had moved on. Kudos!
