Researcher Vacancies at VUB STARlab
Marie Curie RTN Fellowships
Exploration of the Intersection between Ontologies, Medical Imaging, and Human Anatomy.
The research will take place at STARlab, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, within the framework of the European Marie Curie Research and Training Network entitled 3D Anatomical Human.
Description
The objective of the research and training network is to leverage the development of technologies and knowledge around virtual representations of the human body for interactive medical applications. The network has a specific goal: to perform advanced research on realistic, functional 3D models for the human musculoskeletal system (the methodology being demonstrated on the lower limb), and to formally organise medical knowledge of these models and the underlying human system. The partners in the network are University of Geneva (Switzerland, coordinator), EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland), CRS4 (Pula, Italy), IOR (Bologna, Italy), Aalborg University (Denmark), UCL (London, UK), and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium).
The research contributions of VUB STARlab will focus on ontology engineering for applications in the medical domain.
Next to integration of existing ontologies in this area, attention will be given to capturing specialist (clinical) knowledge which goes beyond the description of simple anatomical relationships. VUB STARlab develops and offers tools and methodologies for basic ontology engineering which will likely be extended or adapted to suit the medical domain as part of the research undertaken in this network. For more details, consult http://www.starlab.vub.ac.be/website/project/3dah.
The research will include training periods at some sites of the European partners cited above. Positions are available for early stage researchers (ESR, less than four years of research experience). Each position will in principle last for 12 months.
Requirements
The candidates should have a background in computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering. Good programming and analytical skills are essential. An excellent mastering of the English language, both spoken and written, is a requirement as wel as established research experience in at least two of the following three areas covered by the fellowship: ontology engineering, imaging, and human anatomy.
Marie Curie programme criteria and qualifications apply, consult http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/action/action_en.html. Please note that these criteria encourage international mobility. We strongly encourage women to apply.
Salary
The network offers internationally competitive salaries commensurate with experience and profile, and comprehensive benefit packages.
Contact
Candidates who are interested in these positions or would like to request further details should send e-mail to Prof. dr. Robert Meersman <meersman@...> and Dr. Aggelos Liapis <liapis.aggelos@...>
