EOS Canon digital sensors

A friend of mine swears that Kodak makes the CMOS full frame image
sensors for Canon.  He says that Kodak's image sensors are the best in
the world.

I always thought that in the EOS DSLRs the image sensors are made by
Canon.   The only definitive info I can find is in the 20D White Pages
where it states that the image sensor is CMOS made by Canon.

Can anybody straighten us out?

BTW he also says Nikon uses Kodak sensors.......

Canon makes its' own sensors. Nikon doesn't make most of its' sensors, many
are Sony (D50/70/100/200) and a few have been Kodak.

You can look at reviews of specific models and they will generally identify
the semsor manufacturer. DPReview lists the sensor manufaturer in it's
specifications.

Nikon uses Sony sensors. Canon uses Canon sensors. Leica uses Kodak
sensors. I think (but am not sure) that Olympus might use some Kodak
sensors. Some of the MF sensors are from Kodak; others are from
Dalsa. Some are not telling. :-)

At Scitex, we used Kodak CCD's for our scanners and believed they were the best and I'm pretty sure that Leaf used Kodak CCD's before they started making their own CMOS sensors so I wouldn't be surprised by that news.

However, I'm pretty sure that Nikon uses Sony sensors, which is why they are limited to 1.5X factor cameras.  Sony doesn't want to make a bigger sensor.

CMOS sensors are MUCH easier to make than CCD, though they are nosier.  It's a huge breakthrough for Canon to be able to control the noise in their CMOS sensor cameras.

Bob,
this isn't validation, but I met a guy at Carlsbad Caverns two years ago who worked for Kodak...
and while he didn't exactly say those words (because I wasn't asking), he led me to believe that
Kodak was involved with the sensor conversations... we were more involved in talking about the
financial issues Kodak was having with the sorry state of film production. It's the conversation
in which I confirmed my suspicion that the 1DS worked better in cold conditions than in hot... his
knowledge of the behavioral aspects of the CMOS leads me to think that your statement might be
true.

Hi

Last I heard the 1ds 1ds mk2 and I think the 5d full
framers use canon sensors. The rebel sensors are
farmed out. That's what I heard anyway!

In the old days Kodak made a DCS 520 and 560 built on
a in chassis. But I'm not sure if it was a Kodak
sensor or Canon. Canon had their own identical
versions called the D2000 and D6000. These are still
usable cameras the 520 has a good frame rate and the
560 makes big beautiful pics as long as the ASA is 100
and the shutter speed is shorter than 1 second.
Otherwise you get noise.

Before that Kodak and Canon made other joint bodies
DCs 1 3 5 and 5c and maybe a couple more. Again I'm
not sure who made the sensor but the body was a 1n

At this point Canon seems to have won the sensor wars
(squabbles). They seem to have the edge on the high
end sensors.

Javier

I would hope that everybody involved with imaging sensors does know the
difference between CMOS and CCD and their respective
behavior/characteristics. Therefore, I don't think one can take that
person's knowledge as an indication that Kodak is supplying sensors to
Canon.

Thanks for all the answers.  I didn't realize that Kodak was that big in
image sensors.

Hi Everyone:
The above is the last mail I received from the list
on 30th October.  Is there anything wrong with the
list?  I know the activity is reduced these days, but
I don't expect not receiving anything from the list
for 3 weeks...  Or I've been kicked out from the list?

regards,
HSH

I don't know if I was kicked off, but this is the first mail since 10/30
from this list. I didn't reregister, so there was probably a snafu
somewhere.

In a humorous OT comment, I got one of those stock tip spams the other day
that automatically went to my junk mail, which I usually glance at every
week or two. I only saw it at all because the sender was Cotty (obviously
not you).

Maybe more shooting than chatting ?????

Or perhaps everyone is at digital/(20D, 30D, 1D/II)
camera specific/photoshop forums more now ....

A snafu or total lack of traffic would be my guess......

I've been getting a lot of stuff on the photo forum at RIT and the 20D group
on yahoo and now that someone brought it up, I haven't seen much from
here.......

Happy Thanksgiving to those of us that celebrate that holiday and best
wishes to all......

430EZ on EOS 1n

by Francis Zhou :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Since every one is wondering why it is so quiet these days, I figure I
will make some noise.

I just got a 430EZ from eBay. I understand that it does not
automatically link to EOS 1n's off center focus points. So how is its
exposure controlled if I deliberately set it to the side focus point?
Refuse to flash altogether or still try to read off the center focus
point's exposure value?

Thanks,

Francis

Linking to the off-centre focus points is not a feature of the flash
itself, but of the body. I do not have the 1n, so I don't know if it
has AIM, but I suspect it has. With my EOS5 you have to set a CF to
make this happen.

If not set, then my EOS 5 will read of the centre focus point and use
this to calculate the flash-exposure. The 1n should be the same.
