EI 200 vs EI 3200?

I've started experimenting with my new D700 and I'm confused
about lack of noise, colour quality, etc.
My favourite salesman told me I should see virtually no noise up
to EI 3200, a little noise at EI 6400.
    In a series of shots made as tiffs at 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
and 6400, enlarged to 200%, I can't see any difference on my
correctly calibrated ViewSonic monitor.
Am I not looking for the correct clues?
As a former brainwashed chrome photographer I'd never use any
film faster than EI 100.  I can't believe that I can shoot digital
at, say, 3200 and expect the same image quality as at 200.  Or do I
have to reprogram my brain now?

What have you and your brain been doing for the last two years ? :-)
I regularly use 1600 with Canon Ds2. For some subject matter i never use
flash when it would have been impossible to shoot with film and flash. I
use 400 and get better than Provia 100 used to give. In this respect the
Ds2 is much better than the first 1Ds

I assume Nikon are making great improvements also. Lack of noise at high
speed is one of the big advantages with digi IMO.

Check your sensor for small faults at the highest speed. I get  a small
group of missing pixels above 800. I had originally checked at 100 (and
sent one body back) but did not think to check at the highest speed.

I wonder is anyone starting to see small faults now in sensors over two
years old ??? Is anyone seeing stars in the night that were not there
before?

cheers

Pete
