1st Dec 2008: Deadline for INSPIRE 2009 abstract submission

Dear Colleagues,

A gentle reminder that the deadline for submitting abstracts to the INSPIRE/GSDI conference is fast approaching.

The Third INSPIRE Conference will take place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 15-19 June 2009, in conjunction with the Eleventh International Conference of the GSDI Association and the national conference on Dutch SDI: Results and Challenges.
The deadline form submitting abstracts is the 1st December 2008.

please, have a look at ESRI v_campus for video resources (btw, "The District" some
years ago was a good video example for GI oriented applications) while on YOUTUBE
the video_clips are more or less advertizing oriented, informative, but with a limited
learning effect...

as we still have a VERY long way to go not only for syntactical SDI interoperability,
but especially for semantical SDI interoperation of INSPIRE annexes I, II, III

and, finally, have a look onto the eLearning video_clips inside the
EU-FP6-NATURNET project portal finalized last december 2007...

a VERY excellent example of regional SDI applications is the production of the
regional ENVIRO atlas, just published by Czech regional government in LIBEREC (CZ)

ONLINE too as from january 2009 when CZ is "ruling" the new EU presidentship... :-)

CALL FOR PAPERS: NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL EARTH

It is now ten years since Al Gore's published speech outlining his vision for a Digital Earth. Much of what he described is now accomplished in the virtual globes -- Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth, NASA World Wind etc. -- but several notable gaps can be identified. Moreover the vision needs updating based on the technology and expectations of 2008, and possible futures; and Digital Earth's relationship to other parts of the geospatial universe needs to be elaborated. The International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructure Research invites papers dealing with any aspect of Digital Earth and its future, from technology to societal context. An editorial published in the journal earlier this year (http://ijsdir.jrc.ec.europa.eu/index.php/ijsdir/article/viewFile/119/99) and based on discussions at a Vespucci Initiative workshop in Florence in June identifies some perceived requirements and a related research agenda, and may form a useful starting point for authors contemplating responses to this call.

Articles should be no longer than 8000 words including abstract and references

Deadline for submissions is 31^st January 2009

All articles will be peer reviewed.

IJSDIR is published free of charge and adheres to the Open Archives Initiative, which aims to facilitate the dissemination of electronic content. Authors submitting their work will therefore be also required to submit harvestable metadata. Authors publishing on IJSDIR retain full but non-exclusive rights in their articles, and will be required to use one of the Creative Commons licenses for submitting their work (http://creativecommons.org). The Journal requires authors not to submit their works to other publishers for review while the article proceeds through the IJSDIR review process. During this process however, the article will be already posted in the IJSDIR web site under the "Articles under Review" section to facilitate the timely exchange of ideas and progress of science. As soon as the article is accepted for publication, it will be moved to the Published section of the Web site. This process ensures that articles are published as quickly as possible and do not suffer the usual delays of journals in print.

The upshot seems to be that I wouldn’t be able to buy a book from, say, Amazon, from a computer at the airport in Cairo, and have it shipped to my sister in Boston. Pity. In Spanish there’s a saying roughly translated as “Putting gates on an open field”….(google: puertas al campo)
