I don't know how I got on this list, most of it is beyond me, but the last message Lee sent piqued my interest. I got a gift of a DTS CD of course it will not play on CD player, but I managed to rip it to computer as a wav file with a cue file. I can not figure out how to convert it to a stereo wave file to burn a standard CD. Adacity will open the file but plays hiss, must still be six channel encoded wave.

Actually this may pertain to dvd audio as someone might want to rip dts to dvd audio. I wouldn't know why tho.

Mind you I'm 65 and logical unit is partially fried so I would need a simple way to demux to 2 channels which VLC apparently does when I play the CD thru it cause it sound great with my Sansui Amp.

The disc has this on it:
This Disc is designed for use in SUPER AUDIO CD Player only
mojave productions
sacd to dts cd transfer
44.1 khz 24 bit

dts
Multi-ch

Yup I'm to cheap to go buy a stereo CD besides it had become a challenge.

dj,

I have used wavewizard (free) to produce all sorts of multichannel files, starting from files with various numbers of channels. The main criterion for version S to handle a multi-channel file is that it have the standard 44 byte wave file header. I'm pretty sure wavewizard does this. However, if I have any doubt I just convert the file to standard format using ffmpeg, with a command like this:

ffmpeg -i in.wav -acodec copy out.wav

out.wav is then in a standard wave file format. There may well be better ways to do this (tell me), but this one works.

Audacity is a great program for editing, but as far as I know it's not possible to create wave files with more than two channels. Of course, the mono or stereo files written by Audacity can be assembled into multichannel files as required by wavewizard.

According to the unofficial specifications, it should be possible to have different audio characteristics for certain sets of channels. (I don't recall whether the particular splitting you gave as an example is allowed or not.) However, at the moment it is not possible in version S to author a disc in this way, because we have not changed the method for pulling in the audio data. Without thinking about it very carefully it's hard to know what would be involved in doing this. We would probably be required to pull in the audio data in smaller units, say as mono wave files, and then fold them together properly. As I begin to think about it, this doesn't sound too hard, except that I'm not sure that the specifications make it clear where all the changes in the various files would have to be made. It's an intriguing possibility and I will give it some thought.

We have, however, made it possible to specify the channel group assignment, for any given multichannel program, so some of the groundwork has been laid. On the other hand, I'm not altogether sure that every universal player is required to pay attention to the cga. I have been meaning to do some experiments in this regard.

Sincerely,
Lee

wav files) that Version S will handle properly. Especially any free programs,
even demos, if you've tried them (Audacity comes to mind).

Secondly, I'm curious if version S allows for different sample frequencies in
various channels within a particular wav file. For example, for 5.1 channels,
does it allow the front and center channels to be 24/96 and the other channels
to be less so the overall bit rate could be small enough to fit the DVDA
spec? If not, could you modify Version S to allow it?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge

I forgot to ask: what is the standard sample count version S uses for 5.1
channels at 24/96? What about 24/48 or 4.0 channels? Is there a simple
but it would be nice to know what the standard count is.

I have done some stereo testing of Lee's version S. My interest in version S
is mainly for its auto-PP feature and for possibly fixing a problem I've had
with DC's last version which hangs during authoring when it encounters certain
24/96 wav files I create in my music projects. I believe this happens from
time to time when I edit a wav file in either SoundForge or CoolEdit, but I
have never been able to ascertain the exact cause(s). In most cases, if DC's
version hangs, then I've been able to fix it by checking the wav file to make
sure it has an even number of samples (i.e., add or subtract one sample if
necessary) and then re-saving it. But sometimes it hangs on a wav file even
when it has an even number of samples, so that's not the whole story.

I did a few quickie tests by taking some 24/96 wav files from prior successful
projects and editing half of them so they had an odd number of samples, and
then authoring these with DC's version until I got one of them to fail (i.e.,
hang during authoring). For most of the wav files, DC's version did the
padding automatically and made workable DVDAs just fine. For the wav file
that did hang, I tried it again using version S (with the "gjoin" switch) and
it did not hang. So I made the iso from it and burned it and it played fine
and gaplessly in my DVD Players (Pioneer 563a and Denon 1930ci). These were
all 24/96 tests in stereo. I tried the same approach with some 24/192 stereo
wav files, but I couldn't get DC's version to hang on any of them. Both DC's
version and version S made workable DVDAs just fine on the 24/192 wav files,
with no gapless problems encountered.

I also noticed that using version S seemed to remove the tiny click that I get
between tracks with DC's version when playing back DVDAs on my PC via Audigy's
software DVDA Player. The tiny click is audible between tracks that have a
silent gap. When tracks are gapless, the Audigy DVDA Player produces an
annoying split-second gap of silence, so it's not a great way to play music on
a PC, anyway. But the tiny click issue seems to be eliminated by version S,
which is a benefit it offers, so I thought I should mention it. [Because of
the non-gapless playback I never play DVDAs on PC with the Audigy player. I
just play the music as wav or flac files in foobar where they are gapless and
can be output through a better music card than my Audigy2 ZS.]

So my feedback on version S is: so far, so good. Thanks again for the
program, Lee. It seems to work fine for the few tests I did.

I thought I would try your latest version and try to understand what it can do. I have been making a kind of DVD-video/dvd-audio hybrid for quite some time (using the formula given below), but in my case the audio and video parts are not linked in any way (i.e., a standard dvd player just sees the video and a dvd-audio player in dvd-audio mode sees only the audio part). Could you please expand on how to use the linking feature.

I have been having some problems with the Windows executable of 8.07, however, if I use it with syntax other than "legacy" syntax. I have attached a file "session.log" that documents the following problems. 1) The -i syntax for audio files encounters an error, while legacy -g syntax works. 2) I encounter an error when I try to generate a hybrid.

Recipe for "poor man's hybrid":

1. Create a video dvd file set in the usual way. Do not name its folder DVD.

2. Run dvda-author in the usual way, creating a folder DVD.

           Example: dvda-author -pp 1000 -o DVD -g f0.wav f1.wav -g f2.wav

3. Replace the folder VIDEO_TS in DVD with VIDEO_TS from the video dvd.

4. Run mkisofs

           Example: mkisofs -sort hsort399.txt -o c:\dvda\image.iso -dvd-video DVD

5. Find out the required starting pp, e.g. by running isoinfo:

           isoinfo -i c:\dvda\image.iso -l

6. Move VIDEO_TS to a safe place (otherwise it will be destroyed by the next step!).

7. Rerun dvda-author with the value of pp found by examing the output of isoinfo. It will be large!

8. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to produce the final image.iso.

Comments

1. The key to this scheme is to place the video part 'low" in the .iso, just as it usually is,

allowing a standard dvd player to find it. The audio files are placed much higher than usual, but

we tell the dvd-audio player where to find them through the pp specification. The special sort file

        hsort399.txt (attached) does this.

  2. Getting the pp positioning correct is important. If not specified, AUDIO_PP.IFO is usually placed low,

quite possibly leading to a coaster!

  3. The version of mkisofs may be important. Used here: mkisofs 2.01 (i686-pc-cygwin)

  4. This kind of hybrid is convenient for gathering together related audio and video material, or simply

to save shelf space by maximizing space utilization on a dvd-r.

This new dev version addresses some of the main issues that have been discussed on this forum:

- audio formats: extension to Ogg FLAC

- gap-reduction: experimental switch -0 (or --no-padding) blocks all padding operations done by dvda-author

- header parsing/repair: the new fixwav lib makes it possible to test for WAV-standard compliance and discriminate between header and software issues. It also provides a few sub-options aimed at smoothing out the repairing process. Sub-options prune and padding allow for better control of the amount of silence/padding at the end of WAV files.

Other classic features have been added (long options, configuration file)

This version has not been ported to other environments than Linux (a Cygwin build can be obtained without Ogg FLAC support). All *nix platforms that have strndup and truncate should obtain successful builds.

Best, Fab
Hi Tomasz
I have tested 24 bit-192 kHz again on both Linux and XP for version 08.07 and so far I've noticed nothing comparable to your issue, which I could not duplicate.
However, some log details seem to point to riff/WAVE non canonical headers and/or, as Lee wrote, to non-standard sample counts.
Your issue could be made clear by using 08.08-dev, which I'll be releasing Sunday night. This dev version includes a header repair module and can fine-tune sample counts and padding.
Best, Fab
Support for 24 bit, 192 kHz wav files seems to be broken. I've tried
to prepare dvda-audio disc from such files but without success.
According to informations on main dvda-author page 24 bit, 192 kHz
stereo wav files are supported. Attached file contains log from
console.

I tried a 24/176 stereo wav file in version S -- no problem. Also no problem with DC's version or with Fabrice's version 2 -- the first one, not the most recent one. Of course, I'm running XP, while I'm guessing you are running Linux.

My test wav files are very big - about 200MB per file. So may you
publish your source codes of version S and I will try it ? I red about
> If you post your test files and tell me how to download them, I will try
> them in my Version S, which should handle them. From the log, it appears
> that several files have an odd number of samples, which may be causing the
> problem.
>> Support for 24 bit, 192 kHz wav files seems to be broken. I've tried
>> According to informations on main dvda-author page 24 bit, 192 kHz

Hi Tom

It's a bit unexpected as the required memory allocation is quite small, typically less than half that of prior versions for common usage. However, 08.06 use dynamic memory allocation, which as is well known has occasional issues on Linux. Could you please send me your log? (relaunch the app with dvda-author -i (dir) (other options) > ~/log.txt 2>&1 )
(send to list with text in message, or upload a file in bug tracker section as you like)
Thanks.

Hi,

There is no dedicated user mailing list so I decided to post to this
list. I wanted to use dvda-author to create my own dvd-audio
collection. I used 08.06 version of dvda-author tool but there was an
error. I saw something like this [ERR] "Memory shortage on creating
AMG". It was just after processing last track from my collection.
dvda-author was executed with -i option. I use ubuntu 8.04. Can
anybody help me.

Regards

I'm hoping you're not having any trouble with the ISO file I sent you. I have made a slight refinement to the postprocessing program, and if you like I will send you another ISO file, which I think represents somewhat nicer set of trade-offs in search of the perfect gapless solution for a cooperative players.

In this case the entire program (10 original tracks) is accessed as track one. The program from original track two to the end is accessed as track two, and so on. In each case, play is gapless without regard to the player. There are still some quirks which I have not been able to circumvent, however. No matter what the starting point, upon playing the original track 10 play restarts at the track that follows the track at which the program was entered. If the program centered at track 10, play ceases when the original track 10 is done.

It seems to me that these quirks are a reasonable price to pay for gapless playback. Insertion of a track with a minute or so of silence at the end would permit the player to be manually stopped, if the restart would be too jarring. In principle, insertion of some silence for this purpose could be made part of the authoring process.

Hello Udo,

I will attempt to attach a file that you can burn; it is a bit over 11 MB. This is a bit longer than I was thinking of, but it works better if the time between tracks is not too short.

The DVD-audio that you will get by burning the attached ISO will be about 55 seconds. It represents my latest attempt to retain as many desirable features as possible, while not using any more disk space than required.

The program here contains only one group (as I mentioned this a slightly different from the solution I alluded to earlier). To produce it, I divided the first 55 or so seconds of a song into 10 files of about five seconds each. A straightforward authoring will produce a DVD that is gapless on my Pioneer but not my Oppo. Using our postprocessing, the DVD still has 10 tracks, but track 10 starts at the beginning and plays without regard to track divisions. Selecting any of the first nine tracks with your remote, either by number or by left or right arrow should result in the usual behavior, so that access to any track is retained (actually, the way I did it here means that original track 10 cannot be accessed directly; this can be rectified simply enough I'm sure). Of course, you may expect to notice gaps when you enter at tracks one through nine, though they will play gapless if the player allows. Track 10 on the other hand will play exactly as if the 10 files resulting from my splitting process had been recombined perfectly into a single entity and then used for authoring.

Compared to the workaround solution I mentioned earlier, this one has the advantage that it requires only one group, as well as being a bit simpler to carry out. It does have a small quirk, which I hope I can figure out a way of removing: at the end of track nine, play proceeds to track 10, which has the effect of replaying the program. Hence please regard this as a work in progress, and feel free to point out problems and make suggestions.

> The disc would have two groups. The first is the whole
> segment with no
> divisions. The second has 10 tracks, and is gapless on
> capable players (on
> a Pioneer but not, e.g., on my Oppo 981). The trick is
> that the space is
> not doubled.

THAT would be the interesting part.
I can show (even more) that the player is flawed.
NAD already told me that gapless is NOT a feature on their players until now because of hardware limitations (yeah right...).
Maybe I can show them once more they need to fix this.

Please let me knwow where I can get the demo DVD-A!

Kind regards,
Udo

Thank you for your encouraging words. I have heard of but never seen the wave Lab demo, but it sounds like I should check it out.

With regard to our gapless options, let me note that they were motivated by my son Tim's experience and editing wave files that just happened to have an odd number of samples, which caused DVDA-author to insert padding. This sounds like what has happened to you. What I call join mode was designed so that if a single stream, stereo or multichannel, 16 or 24 bits, is divided arbitrarily, the authoring program will adjust such that there are no gaps and that a stream of bytes is extracted from the AOB file it will match the original stream exactly. I tried to test our resulting code on many different cases from two to 6 channels and at both 16 and 24 bits. What we call singletrack mode is the same except that we eliminate the track divisions. As I mentioned earlier, the AOBs that result in these two cases are identical. The bottom line is that I suspect that version S will do exactly what you want it to do.

I am more than willing to supply on an informal basis a Windows executable for testing. Usage is virtually identical to the original version, except for the new options and the automatic treatment of the starting position for the audio PP. The size of the executable is about half that of the original, probably because it is not cross compiled. If I still had access to a Linux computer (as I did for many years at Ford research), I would build a Linux executable as well.

You obviously know much more about DVDA authoring than I, so maybe you already
are aware of the following:

I wonder if you have perused the manual/help files that come with WaveLab
demo? From that it is obvious to even a novice like me that the DVDA spec
allows for authoring a project with more than one group referring to one set
of AOB files. I've always wanted to be able to author DVDAs this way, so that
one group could play all the tracks in the AOB set and a second group could
play a subset of favorite tracks from the same AOB set. However, I never got
very far in my experiments because the WaveLab demo doesn't let you save
anything so you can't even "test-author" anything this complex, and I can't
really afford WaveLab to just get this one feature. Nonetheless, this seems
similar to what your "overlapping track definitions" idea is intended to do,
so maybe reading the WaveLab documentation might give you some insights. I
bet you've already done that, though...

Secondly, I find your gapless options interesting. Especially because I have
noticed that when I author 24/96 wav files, I usually have problems with
Dave's DVDA-Author program unless I make sure all the files are split so each
file has an even number of samples. Odd sample number files either cause
authoring to stop, or cause a soft audible click on playback if it does happen
to complete the authoring, or both. This doesn't happen with 16 bit files. I
still haven't figured out the causes completely, but this behavior is probably
due to quirks in how I process the 24/96 files, since I don't see recent posts
regarding such problems. So I'm curious about your gapless support options:
do they handle odd sample numbers automatically without the problems I have
found for 24/96 wav files? I would be nice to not have to check and fix them
manually all the time.

Good luck on future development options; I like what you are doing.
