I can second on Dotster. No issues, easy to maintain, and cost is OK.

I use Gandi[1] and recommend them highly. Prices are probably not the
cheapest, but their service has been excellent in ~two years I've been
using them.

"a bit"?  Ya think?  Not like, say, ICANN itself is considering action
against them for their unethical practices or anything....

I used to be with Dotster, but these days I've moved my domains over to
gandi.net.  Tucows is also very highly regarded.

I've been using register.com for years.  I've never had a problem with them.

There are probably many cheaper ones out there now.... but I'm loath to try
a different registrar.... but I've made note of recommendations of others on
this thread... although I recently renewed....

Sorry - 9 total but some are not currently in use.

And yes, 9 or 11 are still approximately nothing in the grand scheme of
things.  :-)

Dotster for my "important" domains, GoDaddy for the stuff that I wouldn't
mind if they fucked it up.

For the benefit of those of us overseas - what are GoDaddy girls?

Hey, don't tell me you haven't seen the Superbowl ads? :) [1] Didn't you
know that sex sells domain registrations?

[1] If you hunt around the GoDaddy site, I think they have an archive of
previous advertising campaigns.

Let's just say they had a whole ad campaign based on "Never mind our
service, look how big this girl's hooters are."

Since nobody else has mentioned them yet, I register my .com/.net/.org
through Joker.

But AFAICS, there's nothing that actually differentiates registrars except
the price. Joker charges in Euros and I don't seem to pay the German VAT on
registrations, which reduces the price slightly over doing it with a local
firm.

For .uk, I just do them through my ISP, Webtapestry. I'm still looking for
somebody who can register me a .pm domain.

Their terms do vary, and their service definitely does.

and in addition to service, the policies of how they actually handle a
domain name dispute varies (even though ICANN has a so-called uniform
dispute resolution policy at the current time).   we have lived thru a
very unpleasant experience with Network Solutions where they revised the
rules three times during the dispute and of course have the provisions
that if you continue to use the domain name you agree to any changes in
the rules as soon as they publish them on their web site.

Gandi (and perhaps others) are bound by the ICANN rules but have worked
to help the domain holders retain their rights so far as they can.

Firstdomain.net -- went there after fleeing Register.com after
fleeing Network Solutions, have been there for most of a decade.

Have been hearing good things about Gandi -- it appears that there's
been somewhat of a turnaround vis-a-vis their attitude.  Spamhaus
uses them, which I suppose is a testimonial.

NetSol is now squatting SUBdomains, on top of front-running domains
and all the other nonsense.

Register.com has progressed from merely supporting spam to actively
spamming on behalf of themselves.

Avoid GoDaddy, GKG, Directi, Directnic, Bulkregister, and Enom.
