U would have to be really, really ugly to outshine this vehicle. The EV history makes it v.v.cool. tks locK --------------------------------- Looking for the perfect gift? Re: Does this EV make me look ugly?Aaagh. I had the chance to buy one of these very similar to this one
(needed new brushes, some paint, and new batteries, and the interior was a bit beat) a few years ago for only $2k, and I am still kicking myself for not doing it. I happen to really like the look of it, and they seem to be very nice factory EV's for the time. I have a friend who has one, and it still gets driven daily, if he's not driving the pickup with the welding rig on it. There were about 50 of them built, and most of them still in existence are right around Denver (they were built somewhere around here). I think the curb weight is correct for the weight with batteries. Fiberglass baby! He gets a maximum of about 50miles on his though -- with real world driving and some hills. One of these is the car I was talking about that drove to the top of pikes peak, then regenned all the way back down. Re: Does this EV make me look ugly? The specs are a bit optimistic, IMO. Seventy-five miles range? I don't
think so. These are pretty decently designed EVs, though. The battery tunnel makes for a well balanced car. It was made by Unique Mobility, but it does NOT use the brushless motor they now manufacture. It's a GE separately excited motor. Spare parts are no doubt an issue partly because it's a custom design. From what I understand UM did use many parts from other cars but we're talking about cars that were already a few years old when the Electrek was designed over 30 years ago. The controller is a custom design, VERY complex. I've seen one. It looked like about $10-20k worth right there. The buyer could end up in the same boat as the folks who have the Soleq Escort conversions. I would love to have one partly because it's a bit of EV history, but there's no way I'd pay even this seller's starting bid. IMO, other than the slick battery tray, it has little to offer over a good conversion (it's just as heavy). In terms of a practical EV, I'd much rather wait for Lee's Sunrise.
