Detecting if a tab exists for a given page

This question is possibly in the wrong place, but it is a testing
problem.

I am testing loading of pages of my websites from various places
(Links-table, What Is New, Site-read history).
Often I have to click on the same link because there might be a
problem. Each time it opens a new tab and adds a new Firebug window.
This makes testing sometimes difficult: which is the window of the
actual tab?
It would make life easier, if I could detect in the page-load routine
if the page is already loaded into a tab, and then just jump to that
tab, as my main interest is to see that it gets displayed or not.

I hope, that someone either has an answer or more probably, knows,
where would be the best place to repeat the question and get an
answer.

I know, any such action will work only for Firefox, perhaps I can also
find a way for other browsers.
