How can I import Furl bookmarks with the keywords becoming tags in del.icio.us?

Hi,

I would like to import my Furl bookmarks into del.icio.us. I used the
keywords field in Furl for extensively tagging my bookmarks and, of
course, I would now like to get these transferred to del.icio.us as
well. The only export format that really exports all information
including the keywords and not just the topics field for example is
the Furl XML format.
Is there any way how I can import this into del.icio.us?

I found the following pages describing ways to do what I want but
there were problems with them:

Maybe this used to work but now I only get the topics exported when I
select the export option "Browser bookmark: For import to most
browsers (Firefox, Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.)", not the
keywords.

nfshost.com/2005/04/furl-to-delicious.html
The tool called furl2delicious downloadable from this site is always
corrupt after downloading, so I couldn't install and test it.

You can delete them one by one...but that's terribly tedious, I know.
You might want to try an unofficial tool such as

I would not store your passwords with your Delicious account, if
anyone could access your computer (and you were logged in) they could
easly access your passwords.

I would use a password manager. If you are looking for something you
can access from anywhere I would recommend PassPack -
http://www.passpack.com/ Your data is all sent over a secure
connection. There are also other offline services.

Del.icio.is is not a system for storing passwords... Take a look at this:
http://keepass.info/ or keepassx if you're on a mac.

There are also plenty of firefox extensions that will manage your passwords
for you if the default password manager does not meet your needs.

You'll definitely want to make those non-shared, if you store them at
delicious at all.

This is a good question, and thanks to Brett for an answer that's pretty
much what I would have said if I'd gotten there first. :)

I'd also add that somebody looking over your shoulder at your screen
could see your "not shared" bookmark notes, which might be an issue if
you use Delicious in a public setting such as a cafe, even if you use
your own laptop.

On the other hand, it might be a good compromise for you to save private
bookmarks with a cryptic hint in the notes as to what those passwords
are -- good enough to remind yourself but non-obvious to anybody else
who saw them. You just have to weigh the risk and convenience.

Not right now, although we've heard several requests for something like
this and we agree it'd be a good idea to implement in the future.

If you use Firefox and the Greasemonkey add-on, you might want to give
these scripts a try to help out with editing your bookmarks:

I haven't been able to get them to work for me, but they look promising.

Others can definitely see your notes. If you mark it as private,
though, no one will see the bookmark or notes.

You could conceivably make your username and password a part of the
URL like this:

http://username:password@...

However, that will only work for certain types of login systems.

That said - what if you leave del.icio.us logged in on a public terminal?

In addition, when you're browsing your bookmarks, all information is
sent "in the clear" - not over an SSL connection. Meaning your
passwords could be intercepted.

I personally wouldn't advise anyone to store passwords with their
del.icio.us bookmarks.

I've got a lot of bookmarks in del.*.us right now. Scattered among them
are some number that are not shared. I'd like to be able to perform
some sort of search/filter/something, so that only the unshared ones
were displayed. Then I could go through them, delete the ones no longer
relevant, etc.

Is there a technique for doing this?

I guessed that's what you meant, but I didn't know if you wanted the
long explanation. :) It's "experimental" because we put it out there and
haven't changed it for a long time. In an ideal world it'd get a major
overhaul, and we have a lot of ideas for that, but this feature is lower
on the priority list than several other things and so we're not
currently working on it.

Delicious itself has a lot of lowercase everywhere on the site, and this
choice has to do with style as well as grammar. We're moving toward more
"proper" capitalization eventually, though.

Any way to make it a properly formatted title? As a title it should be?
i.e. "Links for 2008-07-14"

May not seem like a big deal, but when it is on a list of recently posted
titles that are properly formatted it really stands out as improper
punctuation .

We don't have a built-in way to customize the subject. There's an
unofficial plugin for Wordpress that can do this --

we're mostly JDBC running on top of Access.

Just kidding. Delicious is currently a conglomeration of MySQL,
various internal Yahoo technologies, and a dash of Xapian.

somewhere that del.icio.us uses Oracle Database. I don't know for
sure though. I thought it was in the mailing list archives but I

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I'm using the official Delicious extension. Further use seems to suggest that my problems have something to do with the bookmarks syncing. As I'm usually on a different computer every day, and I have over 10000 bookmarks, the syncing takes a looooong time. I noticed that in the sidebar it will usually take a few hours to get up to maybe 400 bookmarks, well short of what I've actually got.

Sometimes I'm lucky and the bookmark goes through but most of the time it's a real hit-and-miss affair.

I've started using Shareaholic and so far all the sites I've bookmarks I've tagged through there are fine.

I like the pop-up bookmarking of the official extension, I like the high-lighted text showing in comments, I like the keyboard shortcut for tagging and I like the tags suggestions but have to say I'm not overly keen on the syncing and integration with Firefox. For me that's just overly complicated.

The old Delicious "buttons" extension worked great for me, so are there any plans for supporting it in FF3?

internet explorer ie add-on v1.01b236 broken and poorly behaved

start with "broken":

1) whenever I tag a page using the add-on, the page is tagged with 2
or 4 *additional* apparently random tags from my tagset. For
example, I just tagged a page with "birding" and "technology" and the
bookmark shows up on my delicious web page with the tags "English-
profession francine imported organizations birding technology". The
first four tags are in my tagset, but spurious on this bookmark. (I
counted the additional tags in sample set of just four pages, but
I've noticed extra tags on dozens of pages using the add-on on
several different WinXP machines, IE version 7.0.5730.11, I just
didn't count them.) Please let me know what additional system
information may be helpful.

Would you please post the old IE extension until this issue is
resolved? It does not appear to be available for download any more.

2) the performance hit makes IE nearly unusable. In particular, it
takes a long time to open a new blank tab. I have about 6000
bookmarks (I wanted to test if performance was better with fewer, but
there's no way to delete or export multiple (but not all) bookmarks
except one by one.)

on to "poorly behaved" -- the first three have to do with versioning:

1) the web page at http://del.icio.us/help/ie/extensionnew says
you're downloading v1.0 but it's 1.01b236
2) the filename of the downloaded executable does not have a version
string in it, nor is one available with right-click -- just the date
of the digital signature
3) one cannot tell from the "add or remove programs" list what
version is installed (it should either be in the program name, or
else behind a "click here for support information" link)

4) Installing the add-on doesn't do anything about an existing
installation of the previous IE extension called something
like "Delicious Buttons". Installation should remove, or at least
prompt for removal, of the redundant earlier application.

It sounds like you want "classic mode", which only includes two basic
buttons (and a context menu button), like the old add-on. You can change
to this by going to Tools -> Delicious Options -> Advanced -> Switch to
Classic Mode. We're working on making Classic Mode an option during the

(even then there was this unnecessary delicious drop-down menu added alongside the usual firefox menus - "file," "edit", etc. - does anyone know how to remove that?) But when i upgraded to firefox 3.0, i was forced to upgrade to the latest delicious add-on, and that includes a total of 9 (that's right NINE!) buttons occupying various places in my browser, plus, in addition to the earlier unnecessary menu, an entire new toolbar to take up more space from my already small screen.

I've tried right-clicking on all these buttons, menus, & the toolbar, & most don't give you the option of removing them (most simply take me to my delicious page - like i need 9 fricking button lurking all over my screen to take me to my delicious page at the slightest accidental provocation).
