workaround.org tutorial.
But having a couple of issues and hope you can help.

1. i get a lot of connection refused errors, so i modified by
$mynetworks line is postfix to include the loopback address, public
and private ip addresses.
But i do still get the error of connection refused from time to time.

2. When i send email to yahoo,live/hotmail,and gmail - it all goes to
the spam bucket --do not know why - I have setup a reverse dns record
for my domain name.
Is there anything else i can check ???

3. I get an error :
>> Sure seems a lot easier to built a proper Spanning-Tree hierarchy that
>> blocks only when necessary and unblocks automatically when the
>> condition clears (no "err-disabled" if the problem has cleared itself)?
> I want to know if someone do sg. like this, and I want to talk with.
> If it clears itself, the problem just "disappears", and stronger the beleif
> that the network is unreliable.

That's why you monitor and you go find root-cause.

>> As far as "hacks" on the network. All comments regarding hard-coding
>> a port ASSUME that the network admin actually knows how to keep and
>> use proper documentation techniques, and is also MONITORING such
>> things via SNMP from the switches, to note inappropriate speed/rate
>> changes.
> Thats nice in theory. The only issue is that, I never seen this nice
> practice.

So you're saying your practice is bad? Time to get control of it.

>> In a properly documented network, hard-setting or autonegotiation
>> aren't "hacks" they're just another setting in the documentation and
>> monitoring systems.
> It's true in a case where you have no choice about incorporating a
> device which doesn't complain standards. But as I said: If a networking
> device doesn't complain so obvious standard, like autonegoiation, it will
> mess up other things too.

That's not a logical argument. Code isn't that way.

That's like saying if there's bugs in Apache for one module, there will
certainly be bugs in another. Non-logical assumption.

People try too hard to associate patterns of "behavior" of a piece of
gear to real bugs. Bugs are bugs. You either have them or you don't.

You can't extrapolate a bug rate from a whole product because a
particular device has a single bug.

What you CAN logically say is that ALL devices have some sort of bug
somewhere in their code. That one's pretty solid, unless you've tied
bugs to money somewhere, and for every bug your vendor has to pay you.

That hasn't happened in computer technology yet. (It has in other
professions, in the form of malpractice lawsuits and insurance.
Doctors, Lawyers, Civil Engineers... when we start having LAWSUITS over
bad code, life will be far more interesting and quality levels will go up.)

> I glanced at your other mail, and I saw, that you wrote about cisco-sun
> difficulties. I think thats a good example: If you have no other working
> solution, It can be the right way. But I have to repeat myself: Only if you
> have proper documentation about those hardcodings/hacks/whatever.

Yes, we agree here. Documentation and monitoring are the network
admin's job.
> Hi!
>
[snip]
> It sounds like the most common issue of the fixed port:
> Device A sets its FE to fixed 100 FD
> Device B sets its FE to autoneg.
> B try to autoneg: A has disabled it, so doesn't answer.
> B sense the speed and sets 100-HD.
> -> B measures many-many collisions because tries Half Duplex operation on a
> link, where the oppenent part operates in Full.

that was the issue, they configured the cat with fixed port and we didn't know!
BUT that was not a problem when, instead of a linux server, there was connected
a c7200 on the same port of the switch ...

> But, if it's the case, what I suppose, it's not the fault of your cisco
> devices, or your computers. It's a simple PEBKAC.

obviously it's not equipment fault, it's just a matter of configuration,
knowing when a port is fixed and when not...
but sometimes you just *can't* know how some 'computers' are configured,
and in our experience when the connection is cisco <-> cisco aren't
any problems, when it's cisco <-> other equipment fixing the port on the
non-cisco server/switch/whatever has always fixed collision problems
while rarely tweaking on cisco config has...

btw, never had a problem with Gbit connections, only with 100 Mbit, (and
ethtool even refuses to turn autoneg off on GbE fortunately ;)

Another case of fixing a port speed:
We had a 10 base T network (but with 5 and 5E cabling). all went fine for
some years. at a certain time the number of workstations connected were so
much increased that the network became unusable.
We bought some Gigabit switches and as pheripheric swicthes, to conenct
all WS in a room, some chap 100 MB switches. all was fine ... for just a
few weeks ... given more bandwidth even users increased their usage, so
even the 100 MB switch proved unusable ... ot at least it looked so. We
bought a further gigabit one.
Actually it fixed the problem for "local" (that is between hosts in
the same romm) file transfer but speed decreased for "outside" connection,
op to levers worse than when used the 10 MB switch.
Since i had doubt on one of the GB switch i swapped that one for a
knownt-to-work 100 MB one. Performance retuyrned good.
I inquired and discovered that on the cable from the backbone to the romm
having problem (a long and hard to reach cable) 2 wires were defective
somewhere . Changing the wire was out of concern, so the solution was to
set the speed at 100 MB on that junction, so it used only two
"good" pairs, while on GB setting it tried to use also the two defective
ones.
> Hi,
[snip]

> Could you show us some proof for this, otherwise I have to assume, that
> this is a nonsense urban legend.
> I have tons of 2950s and 3750s at my workplace which is maintained by me,
> but there is no fixed ports in the whole building.

we have a cat 2950 connected to a server running quagga.
We kept seeing collision both on the switch (led blinking yellow) and
on the server (ifconfig from console and sh int eth1 from vtysh). Talking
with our upstrem provider (it's their cat) they told to fix our port
and *bam* no more collision in two years. After that we had to temporarily
replace a linksys managed switch with a cheap one and our 7200 began to show
collisions on the fE interface which disappeared when we put back the
linksys and fixed the port there ...
Otherwise: If you plan well, you will know at the planning state, what
ports will be backbone ports, and you allow pdu's there, and you will know
what ports will be access ports, and you allow spanning-tree portfast on
them, but if you don't want to mess up things, you should also allow
bpduguard also.

> >Yes! That's another correct observation! If a device doesn't comply a
> >standard which is so obvios, than what can do wrong too?
> >And the other observation is also correct: If you do too many hacks
> >on your
> >network, it's usually undocumented, and it cause many other problems
> >when
> >you connect devices which works correctly, and comply the standards.
>

The only issue is that, I never seen this nice
practice.

I glanced at your other mail, and I saw, that you wrote about cisco-sun
difficulties. I think thats a good example: If you have no other working
solution, It can be the right way. But I have to repeat myself: Only if you
have proper documentation about those hardcodings/hacks/whatever.

Cheers,
> It is quite common practise to set the ports to what you need so that
> the auto-negotiation does not get it wrong, in particular setting half
> "cisco connected to cisco", but very common when its "cisco
> connected to
> some other brand".

Cisco / Sun combinations are PARTICULARLY notorious for this
problem. They have never played nicely between their different forms
of auto-negotiation.

Hard-coding in the server room/closet, auto-negotiation for the PC's
on the general population network is VERY common. Hard-coding in a
data-center environment is also quite common.

One place where this falls down are fiber interfaces. The fiber specs
typically do things "right" without messing with them, and messing
with hard-setting fiber interfaces often leads to other trouble (human
error).

Hard-setting in cases where Ethernet distance lengths for higher
speeds have been exceeded can also be useful. The cable in use may
not consistently work well at a higher speed over long distances, but
will handle lower speed Ethernet just fine.

(Example: Very old buildings with Cat 3 type cabling in risers often
exhibits bad CRC error rates at 100 full. 100 half, or even 10 full/
half hard-set in the switch closet may save a small company struggling
for cash enough money and time to "get by" until the building's
distribution frame cabling can be upgraded. It's a stupid thing to
have to do, but it's better than thousands upon thousands of CRC
errors from old wiring counting up in all the switches.)

In short -- if anyone hasn't been around Ethernet long enough to have
seen times when hard-set settings and auto-negotiation can BOTH cause
trouble, they haven't seen it all yet. I have.

Try a call-center wired with Cat 3 25-pair in riser bundles to 110
punch blocks (old AT&T building) to Cat 5 STP (shielded, not
unshielded twisted pair) installed incorrectly with drain wires at
both ends tied to ground and at 3m punch blocks cross-connected to the
110's (remember those, anyone?) within a 1/8 mile of a high-powered AM
broadcast facility. (Yeah, that was fun.)
- setuid bit of maildrop executable
- UID and GID on the Maildir

Hi,

You can pickup all these configuration problems in the source code of
our control panel. For example, here's our /etc/courier/userdb
generation code:

http://git.gplhost.com/gitweb/?p=dtc.git;a=blob;f=admin/genfiles/gen_maildrop_userdb.php;h=99acab3b0a83752fa96eb331cf1fd9ee88f79b88;hb=3a2c6435db63ea0c6c9c8466bb2e5f91eb1a5008

You can also pickup all the code for doing all what you said above, our

> > Second, its a bit hard to fix auto-negotiation in a vendors product such
> > as a switch, firewall or router. The sad fact is that not all hardware
> > plays nice with one another and you sometimes need to set the interfaces
> > to prevent problems. Yes that even means Gigabit interfaces. If the
> > interfaces negotiated correctly you would not configure the interface to
> > a set speed, only when they do not detect each other correctly. Maybe
> > that clears things up.
>
> If a device is sold as Gigabit-Switch/-Router/-Firewall and does not
> understand Gigabit auto-negotiation I would return it to the seller.

Yes! This is the correct attitude! I do not neither allow devices into my
network which doesn't respect standards. IEEE is not just a bunch of
idiots, and they don't do the standards just for enjoy themself.

<slightly-offtopic>
Common problem, when some moron come to here with bridging enabled in
his/her notebook, and connect to an access port, and then that alternative
OS, whichs name is not spoken - the evil one :-D - starts to send PDUs
towards the access port, and then it's change its state to err-disabled.
When they come to me for complain about the unreliable network, I tell
them, what they did: From my viewpoint, they accross the network policy, so
they can be happy, that I still allow them to connect, and re-allow the
err-disabled port.
</slightly-offtopic>

> During the specification of Gigabit Ethernet they tried to avoid the
> mistakes they made while defining 100Mbit/s and the auto-negotiation
> process in Gb/s is pretty clear - if any "Gigabit" device can not work
> with it I would expect other problems as well..
Yes! That's another correct observation! If a device doesn't comply a
standard which is so obvios, than what can do wrong too?
And the other observation is also correct: If you do too many hacks on your
network, it's usually undocumented, and it cause many other problems when
you connect devices which works correctly, and comply the standards.

PS.: Otherwise: I recently heard that, in the past few years, those "low
end manufacturers" like HP can create well-working devices which comply
standards ;-)

Summarized: If you make network with cheap devices, you pay it's price in
the TCO, with your many time you spent on debugging instead of operating,
and maybe the secondary consequences of the downtime is even higher if you
have to provide SLA or any kind of high availability.

Cheers,
gyu

Hello,

I'v got some questions about the maildrop package. I don't know how to tell it
to fetch
users from the MySQL db (using courier-authdaemon).

Here is my setup : Postfix (patched with VDA) / Courier(pop, imap and mysql) /
Amavis / SpamAssassin and ... maildrop.

The problem is that maildrop doesn't seems to use courier-authdaemon to check
where it have to deliver email.

Well it is common practise, but it is also one of the major problems.
People tend to forget these settings when they plug in other devices and
complain that they have "bad connectivity" or low throughput...

Please make sure that you do not disable the auto-negotiation on
Gigabit-Ports (at least when running at 1Gbit/s) - it is marked as
mandatory in the standard and you should rather fix the broken part that
doesn't understand the auto-negotiation than fiddling around with these
settings.
As you may know, I am the main author of the first open source control
panel that has a chance to be included in the forthcoming Lenny.

I wrote, 2 weeks ago, import and export functionalities to make it easy
to move domains between panel installations.

Now, I want to also be able to import from commercial control panels
like cPanel, DA or Plesk. I already have a (not surprisingly very ugly)
export from Plesk 8, but I need some from others.

So if you can help me, fill a fake domain with accounts (email,
subdomains, ftp, database), then do an export, and send it to me. That
would be of great help.

Regards and thanks to anybody that can help,
P.S: Note that I tried to ask in other places without much success...

Subject: Multiple virtual interfaces in one VLAN

hi,

i have a machine with only one physical network interface.

i know that it is possible to create virtual interfaces (eth0:1, etc.)
to have multiple ip-adresses on one physical interface.

now i would need to configure vlans on this machine - no problem so far,
this is my config:

[code]

auto eth1.1012
iface eth1.1012 inet dhcp
[/code]

that works too, i get the interfaces vlan1012 and vlan1001 and ip
adresses in the corresponding subnets.

but i cant create virtual interfaces for those vlan interfaces - the
problem is i would need about 10 interfaces in one vlan.

i have tried both eth1.1001:1 and eth1:1.1001 syntax - both dont work.

does anyone know how to do this?

hi,

i have a machine with only one physical network interface.

i know that it is possible to create virtual interfaces (eth0:1, etc.)
to have multiple ip-adresses on one physical interface.

now i would need to configure vlans on this machine - no problem so far,

Hi,

Thomas Goirand

P.S: Note that I tried to ask in other places without much success...
> Subject: load balanced nic
>
> All,
>
> I have a load balanced nic, bond0 that is giving errors on the tx side.
>
> each nic, slave 1 and slave 2 have a different amount of errors on the
> tx side. Also they each show collisions. they are connected to a cisco
> 3750 switch. That also shows errors on rcv and fc?
>
> The bond is set up as adaptive load balance. I used this one due to not
> having to change configuration on the switch. Atleast the kernel doc
> said there was no config changes needed at the switch.
>
> any ideas or pointers would be highly appreciated.
> if more information is needed please let me know. I do not have
> access to the configuration on the switches just the nics on the server.
>
> thank you,
