Hello Valerio,
I have encountered the exact same problems while doing the LtspDisklessWorkstation thing, while following the instructions on the Wiki very closely. I didn't manage to solve the issue with the thin-clients so it would be interesting to try Sebastiaan's hint.

I assume you are, as I was, more interested in getting the DWs to work, and get the TCs sorted on another thread. Unfortunately, I don’t have the machine in front of me, just moved it on site Tuesday, I'll try to describe what I did from memory so take care.
My best shot is at the 'next server' line in /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf, DHCP cites this line to the pixie telling it where to get the next step for the boot process, in my system, a combi-server it is:
next-server tjener;
Make sure it points to the right server on your system, try using ip address instead of name.
If that is correct then the 'filename' line has the same effect and should be as said:
filename "/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0";
Make sure this file exists indeed.
The 'root-path' line is NFS related and shouldn't have effect at this stage, but I remember adding the host-name there:
option root-path "tjener:/opt/ltsp/i386";
Or something of that sort.

If that doesn't solve the problem make sure you completed the instructions on sections 5,6 at the Wiki page and look at the example files. http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/LtspDisklessWorkstation#head-7be1d4c82ac998711c8b800d992cb0d7c47daba4
a) Of what I remember the file /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf was missing on my system so I did 'locate lts.conf' and copied it from somewhere on the file system.
b) At the file /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default make sure there's NO newline only spaces: DEFAULT vmlinuz ro initrd=initrd.imgroot=/dev/nfs ip=dhcp nfsroot=/opt/ltsp/i386
Try renaming this file to 01-08-00-27-04-49-0b just to see if the pixie got that far, my guess is it is looking in the wrong location.

At the moment I'm installing again so I'll soon have the possibility to reproduce the process, if you're patient.

The problem you are discribing is probably that the user can't mount his
home directory.
Add a user to the LTSP server and try to login. This way you will use
the local home folder.
If this works, you should check if /skole/tjener/home0/... is mounted on
the LTSP server.
If not check if automount is running or start it manually:
/etc/init.d/automount start

do let everyone access via NFS:

It is redhat manual, but the config file is the same.

I actually followed the wiki and bridged a network interface. it got an
ip and crashed while unpacking the kernel image.
the LTSP server is workining for normal computers with pxe booting.

Actualy I'm doing everythong from virtualbox and I'm using terra
updated to etch half.
Don't think about bridges because I get the same problem using
internal networking.

Actualy I have a problem also with TC:
Thinclients starts and arrive to the ldm login screen.
When I try to log in with a user, it seems to do it but then the
screen stay balck, then I shows a console for less then a second and
goes black again and continue with this loop.
I sse the mouse pointer till the screen is black.
What can this behavior caused by?
(The thin client is still loading the 2.6.18 kernel).

I tried to change the network card of the DWS to see if that could
work but it didn't.

PS: I do not whant to add each WS/DWS to lwat, how do I have to change
/etc/exports to do allow them to mount the homes?

In order to boot VirtualBox as thin client you must configure your ethX
iface as bridge (br0)

Then configure VirtualBox lan as vbox0 for example.

It works for me.

If you did, yesterday i tried the same thing and couldn't get it working
either. Normal clients work perfectly, so it must be a virtualbox thing.

One option is to listen on the network for bootp traffic (port 68 and 69
if I recall correctly) and have wireshark (or tshark) analyze it, to
make sure the clients are fed the right set of boot information.

Another thing: You mention that one kind of setup works but another
doesn't. Is it perhaps one kind of _hardware_ that works and another
not? If possible try boot a thinclient as a diskless and vice versa, to
see if the problem follows the configuration or the hardware.

Now I'm sure of having only one dhcp in the net, the one of skolelinux.
tftp seems not to work then with diskless workstations but it does it
with thinclients.

What can I do?
It ends with the message "boot failed".

Thank you for the hint! Meanwhile, two people kindly involved some
possible persons. I'll see if I can find a Debian prof this way and
otherwise consult another list, in order to cross post only if necessary.

Funny enough, it needs to be a "real" professor. This is the concept of
this special issue: Every article will be written by an author with a
leading "Prof.": The Magazin shall be "captured".

Looking further that
9 of 14 voters for Debian Spins voted for Debian Pure Blends as well,
7 of 12 voters for Integrated Debian Projects voted for Debian Pure
Blends as well,
5 of 12 voters for Debian Slice voted for Debian Pure Blends as well,
seems to give a hint that we might have some kind of raw consensus for the
suggestion that at least won the Doodle poll.

My personal opinion: I liked it from the beginning when I heard the suggestion
the first time at Extremadura meeting.

To come to a final conclusion for a new name I would like to know whether
a considerable number of people insist on a condorset voting and if these
people would volunteer to support this voting by spending some time on the
technical details. My problem is that I'll be offline next week and as
I told you I would like to see a consensus until OSWC (actually I will
have ma talk at 22. October). So there is not much time left. So in
case you have honest concerns about Debian Pure Blends or you feel the
way we found this name is really inacceptable speak up now and ask for a
condorcet voting about the four suggestions above. It would be nice if
you would add to this request your involvement into the stuff we are
talking about - I just have read a few names on the poll I do not remember
from one of the mailing list.

Hi,

debian-edu-install is basically ready for another upload, but I dont want to
upload atm, because it contains the version number "4.0r0 luna alpha1" which
I believe is a bit unbeautiful ;-)

Yesterday on IRC we had a bit of discussion about this, in which I also added
my thoughts about our releases dates and point releases.

IMHO this should be discussed at the developer gathering in RL next week in
Oslo too (and then shared with the list).

Hi,

I and a couple of my friends are publishing a monthly e-magazine in pdf. It is
called Enixma and it is in Turkish. One of the contributors had an MSI Wind
and hacked it. The wifi card is not supported and he unplugged the wifi card
and replaced it with another wifi card and it works.

I have an msi wind and an acer aspire one that I'm testing. So far I've
installed Lenny on the wind and everything works except the wireless. I've
struggled with some online howtos, and also attempted to alien some rpms
from msi, but no joy.
Jose, I believe you have succeeded with this, haven't you (RTL8187SE)?

Secondly I followed the howto for debian2debian-edu, (not on the wind, on
another computer running etchnhalf) but even though everything seems to
have gone well, I can't log on as a skolelinux user, agreeing with the
comment from Kurt at the end. Anyone progressed further than the howto?

I know dekeos is a good alternative, but it doesn't have any debian
packages.
It is developed by the university of Ghent and used in most universities
and colleges in Belgium.

as there are currently two RC bugs against moodle and it is not in
lenny, it makes me want to strongly consider if there are any viable
alternatives, preferrably within debian etch and/or lenny.

meanwhile, i'm having all sorts of trouble with moving moodle from one
server to another (mostly due to lack of understanding of php and mysql
conventions).

anyone have any really solid documentation on installing moodle from
debian packages? moving from one server to another? restoring from
backups? other pages i've found seem to assume a lot about how to
configure mysql (or postgres) and /usr/share/doc/moodle/README.Debian

in my sources.lst I have as first the skolelinux repositories, then
the normal etch repository (mirrors).
So I guess it's the second.

Moving a partition needs these 3 agjustment:

1-WHERE AM I?
the system has to know in wich partition it is /. For example, my /
was the hda7 partition.
Now it is hda6. So I have to modify /etc/fstab to telle skolelinux
where the root is.

2-I CAN'T SEE!
I have an nvidia card and I was using its module. Restoring the
partition in another machine, X will not work because it try to use
the nvidia module. So I modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf chainging 'drvier
"nvidia"' with 'driver "vesa"'.

3-WHO START ME?
Ok, now I have everything ready to run...but I have to set up the
booloader (BL) somewhere.
First of all we adjust the file /boot/grub/menu.lst with the right
partition names.
In my case, (hd0,6) became (hd0,5) and hda7 became hda6.
Now we miss only to setup the BL. I installed it in the MBR.
Run "grub" and give this 3 command
> root (hd0,5)
> setup (hd0)
> quit
These are the values I used, but you have to change them.
root (hd0,5) is where the second stage of grub is found
setup (hd0) is where grub (stage 1) get installed. (If not partitions
are given, it means the MBR).

I deleted the file /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules as josè
wrote and it worked!!!!
Now I have my eth0 and eth1 back :)

(CORRECT ME IF I'M WORNG)
Actualy the workstations are not capable to load their home dir
because the mac address is changed so the value does not match in the
ldap database and the nfs mount does not work.
In my case, I have no problem of security, I can let anyone mount the
home folder of the pupils. So if I remove the maginc group in the
/etc/eports I do not have to add each workstation right?

Would be nice if you posted the actual changes you needed to make, so
this thread works not only as helpdesk for you but also is informational
for others with similar problems/interests, and for developers to
improve the situation.

This sounds like udev playing games with you.

Look at /usr/share/doc/udev/NEWS.Debian.gz (search for "net"), and more
specifically grep /etc/udev/rules.d/* for eth (the actual filename has
changed over time so no longer match documentation in the NEWS file).

If you (like me) dislike udev handling your naming of ethernet devices,
you can either (to use new homemade names) use ifrename or (to get the
old behavior of classic naming in the order you yourself choose to load
your NIC modules) avoid initramfs-tools and instead use yaird (which
does not invoke udev early in the boot process).

...but neither of these approaches is official Debian edu ones.

Remove the file /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules . It
associates the mac of the network cards of the original computer to eth0
& eth1, in the cloned computer you do not have those macs, that's why it
has created eth2 & eth3. Removing that file it will put things ok after
a reboot.

That's a very common issue when cloning, since etch.

Yes, but the solution is easy: remove
the /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules before creating the image
in the original computer.

I made dist-upgrade on my debianedu installation. Before even try it,
I crate an image of its partition with partimage (i have main, ltsp,
workstation profile in one sistem on a single partition). After
several day, I restored this image into a virtual machine (virtual
box). I adjusted fstab, menu.lst, xorg.conf and it works.

Problem: the network does not worl as aspected. The two "fake"
ethernet card are called eth3 and eth4 instead of eth0 and eth2.
I gues there's some association between mac address and device name.
They have no ip address assigned.
When I try to open http://www i obtain the error "impossible to
connect to host proxy webcache at port 3128".
(the same happen with the new kernel).

What do you suggest to have the network working again?

PS: I would like later to have an image of a workstation to restore
easily by net using partimage. I guess I'm going to have the same
problem restoring it on different computers.
