>
> --
> Milan Babuskov

------- End of Original Message -------

I'd like to see a combination of global temporary tables and an on-commit
trigger as part of an example of testing for constraints that can't be verified
directly in a trigger or check constraint, or that should be deferred.

Proposal: require that all departments have at least one employee (a quick
select tells me that's already the case with the default dataset), and defer
the check until commit. This allows you to add a new department, but only so
long as you also add a new employee or move an employee to that department; it
allows you to empty a department and re-fill it with different employees; it
allows you to move all employees out of a department and delete the department.

It could be a single trigger using a join or group-by looking for zero/null, or
it could be more complex: triggers on employees and departments mark the
departments as needing to be re-verified (in a temporary table), then an on-
commit trigger is run that rechecks only the departments listed in the
temporary table. The dataset's small, so a temporary table isn't really needed,
but it could give people a better idea of how to use that pattern.

Aside:
On-commit triggers are odd: they're rare in the database world, so should the
example database show you purely how to use them in the context of Firebird, or
also try to explain what they're useful for in general? And for Firebird-
specific features, should the example database just tell you how, or suggest
a "best practice" pattern? For example: with on-commit triggers, it's probably
best to have the trigger call a procedure that you could call at any time on
your own (recheck the constraint at your leisure, particularly during batch
loads); that's not technically required, though. And maybe it's just a matter
of opinion. Should the employee database maintain a sort of NPOV, like
wikipedia? "Just the facts, ma'am"?

Hi!

First of all thx for the .net Firebird provider.

I have a question regarding the parameter length and the error code 335544321

I'm using the provider with NHibernate and getting the above error
when issuing the following query:

SELECT count(*) as y0_ FROM Drzava this_ WHERE this_.Aktivan = @p0 and
lower(this_.Oznaka) like @p1; @p0 = 'True', @p1 = '%a%'

my Drzava table has the following structure:
CREATE TABLE DRZAVA (
ID NUMERIC (18, 0) NOT NULL,
NAZIV VARCHAR (60) CHARACTER SET WIN1250 COLLATE WIN1250,
OZNAKA VARCHAR (2) CHARACTER SET WIN1250 COLLATE WIN1250,
   AKTIVAN SMALLINT);

ALTER TABLE DRZAVA ADD PRIMARY KEY (ID);

I know that I'm getting this error becouse the OZNAKA field is
Varchar(2) and my parameter is 3 character long, but is there a way to
run this query
succefully? This query is running in isql.

Thx

PS: sorry if I double posted but for me seams that my first message
isn't delivered

While results of permission checks made for user are cached for connection, it's not the case for called stored procedures. With many SP's and triggers that call other SP's it could be quite expensive to perform these checks even for simple permission schemes. In result, prepare times could be much bigger than necessary (or acceptable).

CREATE TABLE DRZAVA (
ID NUMERIC (18, 0) NOT NULL,
NAZIV VARCHAR (60) CHARACTER SET WIN1250 COLLATE WIN1250,
OZNAKA VARCHAR (2) CHARACTER SET WIN1250 COLLATE WIN1250,
    AKTIVAN SMALLINT);

ALTER TABLE DRZAVA ADD PRIMARY KEY (ID);

I know that I'm getting this error becouse the OZNAKA field is
Varchar(2) and my parameter is 3 character long, but is there a way to
run this query
succefully? This query is running in isql.

Thx
>> I've checked the latest SQL draft as well and you seem being absolutely
>> correct. We could schedule the appropriate adjustments for v3.0, if
>> somebody would enter a ticket into the tracker :-)
>
> We already do have
> CORE-1815 Ability to grant role to another role
>
> Looks like they should be gathered in one single item with additions which
> Vlad provided?

    Yes

> One detail - removing ability to set role at connection time will become
> severe regression from many users POV. Therefore I suggest to keep it, adding
> test for correctness of role and disabling login if role is not OK for any
> reason. In 3.0, certainly.

    Agreed

Regards,
regedit to do changes - suppose this can be done changing registry) and do
not let firebird start by default if FS cache settings are not appropriate?
Overridable by conf file, IMHO.
> I've checked the latest SQL draft as well and you seem being absolutely
> correct. We could schedule the appropriate adjustments for v3.0, if
> somebody would enter a ticket into the tracker :-)

We already do have
CORE-1815 Ability to grant role to another role
and
CORE-1377 Add an ability to change role without reconnecting to database.

Looks like they should be gathered in one single item with additions which
Vlad provided?

One detail - removing ability to set role at connection time will become
severe regression from many users POV. Therefore I suggest to keep it, adding
test for correctness of role and disabling login if role is not OK for any
reason. In 3.0, certainly.

> Hi all,
>
> > First Question: Is ist a devel-question?
> > If nobody insists I'd like to move the discussion to firebird doc list
> > (lower traffic, more a doc thing then core engine modification)
> >
> > > Anyway, it would be good to kick a few ideas around first.
> >
> > Is doc list ok for that?
>
> I think the doc list would be the best place, as this is about the example
> database and its use in the documentation. Of course, as soon as Employee
> is to be changed or replaced, the devel guys have to know and agree.

Yes - taking into an a account that employee is built during normal firebird
build process. It's actually is one of tests new build is passing through :)
Even from this point of view adding new features shown to people in employee
is very good thing.
>> here is the crash with icu 3.8.0
> Marius, if the problem is only in icu, may be it's worth taking it's binaries
> and build --with-system-icu? At least at the beginning - it will help you to
> have a look how does FB itself compiled.

Yes i will do so
I saw that perl6/parrot is using system icu with mingw when compiling
So i will unzip icu and compile with that

> An alternative would be a command to drop all privileges of a
> REVOKE ALL FROM <username>
> would be good.
