DWR request timeout and server hung threads

Hi,
I have a website in which I make 4 DWR calls to external webservices and get the content and display it in my page.
When the external webservices are down or there is some issue and it is not responding, DWR request is timed out on the browser, but the server side webcontainer threads keeps on running.
After the timeout the refresh button is again available to the user and the user start to hit the refresh button again which again creates 4 hung threads on the server.
Normally doing peak timing the website is used heavily and this creates lot of hung threads on the server.

Is there a way , when we timeout the XMLHttp request we also timeout the server side thread.

thanks
Anil
