some minor inconsistencies / annoyances

I use qdvdauthor a lot and like it. However, when I'm making DVD menus
there are a few quirks that I think should be cleaned up.

1) adding text:
- when I switch the font style or script, the size drops to 6. There is
no logical reason for this.
- the transparency setting is not preserved between text adds but all
the other settings are.
- a transparency of 0 and 1both make the text 100% transparent
- as transparency increases from 0 to 1, the text becomes more opaque.
Transparency should be renamed opacity or the effect should be reversed.
- it would be nice to be able to set the background and text
transparencies independently.
- white backgrounds are always invisible.

2) when adding or editing frames:
- the frame colour and width are not preserved.
- when editing a frame, the width displays as 4 even though the program
remembers and preserves its actual setting.
- a frame width of 0 is identical to a frame width of 1. Logically, 0
should be invisible (a handy feature).

3) when I start up qdvdauthor after previously making a dvd, it reports
that it has found evidence the previous session crashed. If I recover
the previous session, it is indeed the last DVD project I was working on.

It does great :) thanks for the clue!
it's just new to me that dvdauthor now appends the content of the seconds
title to the first vob file (probably all the way until the size limit is
reached - i haven't tested it with large files yet)
is there a way how to explicitely keep seperate vobs for each title?

The last time I looked under the hood of k9copy this is the scheme they
use to author their dvds.

sequential vob creation but jumping to next title

sorry if this issue has been dealt with before but i've been trying to search
the mailing list for days and the sourceforge ml search server keeps giving me
a timeout.

i am creating vob tracks one after another using cli
$ dvdauthor -t --chapters=... -o dvdtmp -f inputfileX.mpg
then remove respective inputfileX.mpg and continue with the next
in the end finalize with
$ dvdauthor -T -o dvdtmp

the first title starts playing when loading the dvd, after the first title of
course though, the playback stops.
i tried adding -i "post=jump title 2;" at the end of the command line for the
first title, but that results in

ERR: Cannot jump to title #2, only 1 exist
ERR: in VTS pgc 0, <post>

i am trying to avoid doing it through an xml file, because that would require
a multiple amount in temporary disc space. i am working on an embedded
environment, so this is critical.

is there a way how to post jump to a not-yet-existant subsequent track or add
a post jump command to each of the tracks in the finalize step?

I have tried before the solution you yourself tried. IMHO using avidemux is a
much better option so far as my experience goes. You can get it at
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

I am an Ubuntu user myself. So, it is expected that avidemux is installed in
your computer.

I'm having issues with generating my dvd, with mplex reading the video
files created by mplayer.

So I went back and ran the commands one by one. These two commands work
fine.

The out.m2v and out.m2a get created and I can listen to the results using
mplayer.

Next using this command

mplex -f 8 -S 0 -M -o out.mpeg2 out.m2v out.m2a

INFO: [mplex] mplex version 1.8.0 (2.2.4 $Date: 2005/08/28 17:50:54 $)
**ERROR: [mplex] File out.m2v unrecogniseable!
INFO: [mplex] File out.m2a looks like an MPEG Audio stream.
**ERROR: [mplex] Unrecogniseable file(s)... exiting.

It seems that mplex doesn't understand my video files created my mplayer.

Further update on intro problem.

Now I find that may be it is a problem with vlc. While vlc fails to show the
intro, it works like a charm in xine. Any explanation?

I need to see whether it works when actually burned on a DVD and played on my
(Philips) player. I want to decide that tomorrow, because right now I do not
need a coaster.

Adding an Intro does not work in qdvdauthor

Dear All,
I can not tell you what a big fan of qdvdauthor I have become in a short
period of time. This morning, I tried adding an intro for the first time, but
it failed. The menu appears alright, but this is not preceded by the intro movie.

I am using the latest version (released at the start of this month).

Do you have an advice/tips for me?

I am attaching the xml files.

Initial register values?

I haven't seen any mention anywhere of what the initial values of the
G-registers might be when a disc is inserted into a player. I assumed they
would be zero, but yesterday I encountered a menu (mis)behaviour which
suggested that G1 was being initialized to 2:

g0 = 1;
}
}

Putting a "g1 = 0;" statement in the FPC fixed the problem.

Comments in VM commands

The VM language looks close enough to C that I keep getting tempted to write
comments enclosed in "/* ... */". This doesn't work. But XML comments do
work, e.g.

</pre>

Note that you aren't allowed to have a "--" sequence in a comment.

I couldn't find much information, but it seems spumux can take a series
of png images and mux these into the video, so you can do whatever you
want with your subtitles, as long as they only have four colors. Or
maybe three, I can't remember if the transparency needed for the
background uses one space.

properly, I can happily live with the results of anti-aliasing. It's
just that the tool chain I now use lacks other features, such as
positioning the subtitles where I need them, displaying time-adjacent
titles without inserting artificial gaps causing flickering, etc.

With SSA, spumux does all that and I was hoping for a way to get it
to do anti-aliasing, too ;-).

I suspect that there may be a way to manually insert PNG subtitles into
the GUI for dvdauthor sequence so I may try the Gimp suggestion.

DVD subtitles can only contain four colors. This means that
anti-aliasing gets very limited, and even if tried would not bring good
results.

The only way to get really nice subtitles is by burning them to the
video, but then you'll have no way of turning them off.

Burned DVD appears as CD-R in computer

I burned a DVD that works in my standalone player and in MY computer, but when I sent it to an associate, he said it won't play and appears as a blank CD-R in his computer and in his secretary's computer.

I tried three separate DVD's to make sure it wasn't a fluke. They are quality blanks burned at slow speed, so I don't think it's a burning problem.

There are no errors in the dvdauthor log - everything appears to have worked smoothly with no issues.

I used mkisofs with the -dvd-video option to create the iso image - again no errors.

I used k3b to burn the DVD's - again no errors.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Colour information for spumux?

Hi All,

I'm new to this list and hope you can help me.

I've noticed that the subtitles I generate from text with spumux only have two colours, i.e. no anti-aliasing and quite unattractive.

When used with the '-ma' via GUI for dvdauthor option, it reports:

INFO: No color information written

INFO: palette file required for the pgc

When used with the '-mdvd' option, it doesn't report that, but instead the process aborts later on with the report:

ERR: color map full, unable to allocate new colors.

Which means I can't tell what colours were used.

http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/doc/spumux.html provides no information on spumux colour usage.

How do I specify colour information/palette for spumux?

Darcs versus release version

I just pulled down dvdauthor from the Darcs repository, and did a diff
against the 0.6.14 sources.

Apart from some documentation files (and dvdvml/dvdvmy?) present in one but
not the other, I can see no difference in the source files. Since 0.6.14 was
released in February last year, it appears there have been no updates to the
source since then.

Is dvdauthor still under development at all?

[PATCH] Auto-action buttons can have spatial extents too

The dvdauthor tools treat auto-action buttons (ones which are automatically
selected when highlighted) as having no spatial extent (x- and
y-dimensions). I believe this is wrong, since I have some example DVDs which
do show highlightable on-screen representations for auto-action buttons.

The following patch removes all special-casing of spatial extents for these
buttons.

I like to say that i'm so sorry about this post that i'd created.

I found my problem to generate the VOB files.

Is a simple problem but was so hard to find.

My hard disc was creating files with your names in lowercase.

Because this, the dvdauthor was showing a error.

I'd put a option to mount my HD in correct form in /etc/fstab

Now its ok.

This is the solution: Open the /etc/fstab and add this option to mount the discs that are in VFAT system:

/dev/disc /mnt/mount-point vfat rw,auto,umask=077,shortname=winnt 0 0
*****

This option "shortname=winnt" was that fix my error.

[PATCH] Check error returns from creating output directories

If dvdauthor cannot create any part of the output directory structure (for
instance because of protection failures), it doesn't notice. Instead, when
it later tries to create a VOB file in a missing output directory, it will
fail with a confusing message like

Error opening out/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB: No such file or directory

To fix this, the initdir routine in src/dvdauthor.c needs to check the
returns from the mkdir calls. We want to ignore EEXIST (meaning the
directories already exist), but abort on other errors (e.g. "Permission
denied").
