Hi Rosie,

I run a task manager program on the Trimble PDA called tMan (Version 0.9.9), which provides an option to turn the unit off at the home menu. It has many of the useful options similar to the switcher bar that came with previous versions of Pocket PC.

http://code.google.com/p/tman/

Hope this helps,

Looking into a case for the Juno ST, and the Otterbox I'm considering has the problem of hiding the on/off switch. The On part should not be a problem, because the buttons on the face of the Juno can be assigned to programs & will start the Juno back up after it is turned "off".

However, if someone doesn't want to wait for the auto-off, I am wondering if anyone has a good solution for switching off the PDA using either one of those buttons or from the "Start" menu.

Any suggestions appreciated,

To respond to Doug's question at the meeting yesterday.
While I typically haven't used a wizard to make the .nsi installer scripts I almost always use Notepad++
(http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/news.php?lang=uk)
which supports syntax highlighting for it and one click compilation(Not sure if Textpad has support for NSIS). I have however had luck with the HM NIS Edit tool in the past which is a more wizard based frontend.

See this page for more details.
1812 9th Street

The Agenda:

Alex and Doug will demo their Diagram to Database methodology, including
online metadata documentation.
Also, possibly a brief demo of the Aspen project application.

As this will be Alex's last meeting, during and for a bit after lunch he
will run through the list of applications and tools that he's developed
over the years, and where they will be available.

We'll also probably touch on the progress being made on transferring the
content of the cdfg-rap.net site over to the DFG Intranet.

There will also be an ice cream social for Alex at 2pm, for those that can
>

Depends on your accuracy needs and software requirements. No device is going to handle the heat all that much better so it's up to the user to shade it, keep it in a pocket or otherwise alter it's operating conditions. You might want to consider putting a handheld in an otterbox that's sealed, some bluetooth GPS devices could fit in the box with the handheld or you could get a Juno and put that in a box. It might seem a little redundant but after you drop it in the salton sea the first time it'll make sense, since an otterbox with air in it might float depending on the weight inside. The problem of course is glare, but like I said before if you build a shade or only operate in at least your bodies shade things should work out. If software's not really an issue last time I looked the Garmin 76 floated on it's own and was about $200. Some of those might still be available.

Based on a question raised at the last meeting I did a quick revisit to see what's out there in the Ultra Mobile PC realm of things.
Note, UMPC is a term Microsoft coined so the devices are invariably windows if it has that label, devices running other OSes would likely be called something like Internet Tablets.

Here's a list of some general options ranging from $750 - $2000, of non ruggedized devices. My biggest concern with these devices is battery life, keyboard controls and screen brightness outdoors. But if someone has funds there are a few that look worth trying.

I was wondering if you might be able to use a different IDE other than the actual Application Builder.

I'm watching the ESRI seminar on the "ArcGIS Mobile": they say you get 50 licenses to use with the SDK for ArcGIS mobile.

That might be a better focus for developing rather than purchasing ArcPAD licenses since we already have invested in ArcServer.
Yes, the point is, ArcGIS desktop all you need is Vs or similar (ArcGis
+ VS), with Arcpad you need (Arcpad + ArcPad App Builder + VS) or
similar to just to do the development. You can distribute any DLLs' you
make without licensing restrictions (since the other libraries will
already be installed on the user's system, in reference to ArcGIS
development)

That was my point, I don't see what the extra grand is for unless it
allowed distribution of arc libraries (which you say it does not, which
does not surprise me at all). They ought to just include it, you will
need an ArcPAD license to use it anyway. That's what ESRI does for
ArcGIS.

ArcPad application builder does not need Visual Studio.
Unless you plan on building for currently unsupported devices such as a
Yes, the point is, ArcGIS desktop all you need is Vs or similar (ArcGis
+ VS), with Arcpad you need (Arcpad + ArcPad App Builder + VS) or
similar to just to do the development. You can distribute any DLLs' you
make without licensing restrictions (since the other libraries will
already be installed on the user's system, in reference to ArcGIS
development)

That was my point, I don't see what the extra grand is for unless it
allowed distribution of arc libraries (which you say it does not, which
does not surprise me at all). They ought to just include it, you will
need an ArcPAD license to use it anyway. That's what ESRI does for
ArcGIS.

Is the application builder an IDE?

well at $1500 its not likely I will get R2 to purchase (I would have to twist some arms for the $495 license). It was mentioned they were bundled together, so I thought I would get App builder with ArcPad for only $495 (unfortunately that's not the case).

Right now I'm not even sure if I would have time to delve into ArcPad development, or even if it would be of use to DFG to go that route. But, if we had an ArcPad license (and it had app builder), we would at least have the option to consider it.

Of course if you are thinking of getting one also make sure to go through BDB since tacking it on to our current license holding would likely result in a discount of some kind. Who knows, maybe we can even put it on a floating license so several people can test it out, at different times of course.

Once installed, you can make a project in ArcPad quickly OR use arcmap. To make it a full version requires only a registration #.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. You still need a paid version of Visual Studio in order to compile dll extensions for ArcGIS and I see that being analagous to the PDA situation. Same with the licensing, there is no product you can make using arc libraries that doesn't require an arc license of some kind.
> well I figured that it came with a copy of Arcpad, its just kind of pricey at
>
> With Desktop ArcGIS you can develop extensions with no extra cost other than
> your development software. In the case of ArcPad app builder, I think you
> still need development software (like VS or Borland, etc.). Unless the app

well I figured that it came with a copy of Arcpad, its just kind of pricey at $1500 for App Builder (minus 1 license of ArcPad that's still a grand).

With Desktop ArcGIS you can develop extensions with no extra cost other than your development software. In the case of ArcPad app builder, I think you still need development software (like VS or Borland, etc.). Unless the app builder is allowing stand alone applications which use the dll's from Arcpad without additional licensing fees.

At the meeting this came up in the context of writing a custom application in .Net and including ArcObjects when relevant and necessary. We still need to assess if the general ArcPad interface can be customized without having to go the full coding method. Are there any ArcPad licenses for us to tinker with?
We would like to try loading it on the Cowon Q5W.

Of course if you are thinking of getting one also make sure to go through BDB since tacking it on to our current license holding would likely result in a discount of some kind. Who knows, maybe we can even put it on a floating license so several people can test it out, at different times of course.

ArcPad does not include App Builder, but the reverse is true (App
Builder does come with 1 copy of ArcPad).

Also, ArcPad does come with a basic form building tool, from what I
understand, so you don*t necessarily need App Builder if you*re
doing basic apps. Can anyone verify that this is true?
Thanks.

the prices don't look too bad on the blue tooth adapter. I think a demo would be good, especially since all the email of the demise of PDA, and we still have to address the mandate BDB mentioned of digital data collection.
I'll be real interested to hear about results. Keep in mind since it's a linux platform it shouldn't be to hard to package up some really good software for it. I'll check up with the QGIS developers to see if any of them have a had chance to try it yet. I bet we could also setup a local WMS service with an OpenLayers html page locally on the device to server raster tiles ourself in a web browser as well as any other Library layers we want over the web.

What interests me the most though is that with a real OS we can look at things like Python and Java more realistically for cross platform multi device programs.

In terms of the GPS you can easily add a blue tooth one from this page http://www.semsons.com/bluetgpsrec.html
I've used the Holux m1000 but heard good things about the iBlue too.

I'm currently running field tests of statistical significance with the Holux M1000, Garmin 60Csx, Trimble Juno and Timble Geo XT and will let you all know the results of that test when they become available.
