Cylinder Heads

This is for an 1984 xv 1000
I have just removed my cylinder heads. Using a clymer manual as reference, it said to remove oil baffle plate before removing chain sprocket. It commented that this is only in the rear. Guess what there wasn't one. Getting to the same area in the front, guess what. I found one where there is not meant to be one according to book. Where is this thing suppose to be. Back, front, or is there one for both.
Who knows the correct way to adjust valves. When I did mine a while back, the book again seemed to be out. Or has somebody before me put my bike together wrong in the past.
Thankyou

the virago line is vast and varied 10 different models; chain drive, shaft drive, some gravity fed while others are electric fuel pump fed, still another has a pulse injection system hitachi,,mikuni, not to mention the 81-83 frame design difference from the 84-up....hang in there, identify your model and then there are the continents intended for the bikes sale,,,usa bikes can be different than european,or south american...locate all the specific info to your bike in the manual..i know some folks like the haynes over the clymer,,,but in the end we can use all the help we get...keep after it...dont get the heads confused, # 1 is the rear and #2 is the front,,keep in touch,,yg

This was for the 1984 virago 1000 shaft driven in Australia. LC I think. I believe in USA they were known as californian. Looking at some  other sites the oil baffle plate should be in rear cylinder. What is correct. What does the thing do anyway?
Thanks

ive got an 84-1000 shaft drive and love it,,,the oil baffle works to stabilize the oil preventing it from moving about the sump too rapidly say when you are power turning at speed, leaning, etc.. an engineer would want the oil to remain as close to its "at rest level",,,not the sloshing about alternative..good luck
