I've created a small island by reusing the "Croquet(Master)" island. All it
does is load in a single character that I'm animating from an external
application, so at startup all you have is the avater (say White Rabbit) and
this character which (copying Mark McCahill's little video) I snarfed from SL,
using Poser to add a couple of extra animations. Why would this take 2 minutes
or more to load? Is there some better way of doing this than with obj and bhv
files?	I'm ready to hack code if there's a solution.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello All,

After lurking at yesterdays meeting(and hearing that the SA package is not
working with the Cobalt Morph) I tested the Skeletal Animation Package with:
http://www.dmu.com/cobalt/CrusoeWeb.zip
rather than one of my other Cobalt Images and got a working example.
 An odd side effect:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYwc_OwOT4o
the plane shows the grass.bmp and panel.jpg relative to avatar movement.
Not sure if this will help trace back the bug in the Cobalt-Morph. I've been
tearing my hair out over this, glad to know I wasn't doing anything to silly.

Immersive Education meetings rescheduled (May 9th and...)

Hello everyone, because of the Second Life outage on Apr 25 we've rescheduled
that meeting (our "HIGH RESOLUTION AVATARS, OBJECTS, AND ENVIRONMENTS" meeting)
for next Friday (May 9th). We're also in the process of rescheduling the
Wonderland event that was previously scheduled for today (the high-res meeting
comes first since we talk about graphics and the Wonderland rendering engine,
and then the Wonderland meeting follows with that bit of high-res conversation
in mind).

Starting with the Wonderland meeting (date still to be set) we'll start having
our meetings on Education Grid servers that are hosted by universities and
academic organizations. These will happen using all 3 of our Immersive Education
platforms (Wonderland, the open source Second Life viewer, and Cobalt/Croquet).
For a period of time we'll continue to have some meetings in Second Life on the
Linden Labs servers because the Education Grid servers are very early stage and
under active development, but over time we'll transition entirely to the
Education Grid where we'll have backup (failover) servers on different network
segments and hosted by different universities. In cases where we have meetings
on commercial grids (such as the main Second Life grid) we'll always provide
backup locations on the Education Grid so that even if a service goes down we
can have our meetings without interruption. Our backup/failsafe Education
servers for Second Life should be ready by the end of this summer, perhaps even
sooner.

As usual I'll post announcements about next Friday's meeting early next week and
on the day of the meeting itself, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all
there. If you're curious about the materials we'll cover in that conversation
you'll see some (but not all) of the images and videos already online at:

 http://ImmersiveEducation.org/events/

Have a nice weekend, everyone.

Read the lessons of the manual and try to construct an island using the prefab

There are an "inteligent block": a door that opens when clicked.

Deja vu?

Hello everyone, if you've been trying to join our meeting in Second Life we've officially called this one on account of digital rain as well. Here's a note I wrote to one of our group members just moments ago summarizing this unfortunate case of deja vu... Julian, can you make the rain cloud on your blog *bigger* and *darker* this time around?! Second time's not a charm, by any stretch of the imagination:

Hi Suzi, it looks like we have rain day #2 now -- all of Second Life is down, and as result we'll need to reschedule today's event. Starting next month we'll have early-stage nodes (servers) on the Education Grid going live, allowing us to host events on our own servers (with backup nodes for redundancy), but until then our Second Life meetings are unfortunately subject to outages such as this. Here's the post made earlier today about the outage that has us rescheduling today's in-world meeting:
......................................................................................................................................
Teeple Linden teeple at lindenlab.com
Fri Apr 25 13:06:54 PDT 2008

Logins have temporarily been restricted to staff-only as Operations
addresses a slowdown in the asset system. We’ve also broadcast a request
in world for residents who are currently logged in to refrain from
manipulating or transferring assets. We’ll have more info ASAP.
......................................................................................................................................

I'll circulate an updated schedule after talking with our guest speaker today and the speakers for next week's event (we may shift this meeting to next week, or the week after next depending on our guest speaker schedules).

Regards,
Aaron

If your island (or game) will have an "inventory" or you need to "Save the
game" or you need to have a score of the players etc. your Cobalt island needs
to access an external Database.

We will have some lessons about SQL Database access from a Cobalt island but,
to do this access, an "Ordered Collection" is an important intermediary
resource.

This new lesson (18) is about the Class Ordered Collection.

OK. If you don't know what is an SQL Database and you would like to create
"inteligent" Cobalt islands or games (and to make lots of money) it's time to
go to an University and a course of Computer Science or similar :-)
>
> "CoBlocks" (Cobalt Blocks) is something like a virtual LEGO, having "idiot"
> and "inteligent" objects, to be grouped for the easy creation of a Cobalt

This sounds a bit like 2nd-lifes primitives :)

> ...
> Our Manual is not a Manual for "end users" (kids of any age) . It's a Manual
> last	are the "technical" people. We are the "non-technical". And for us is
> this list.

> I hope that everybody can understand these 3 levels.

Ok. Please let me repeat.
- Cobalt developers create the classes that make up the system
- Island developers create CoBlocks and/or Smalltalk classes/scripts to
assemble their world.
- End users start Cobalt for visiting given worlds

This is quite similar to the WWW, where coding the browser, designing the web
page and surfing the web is also delegated to these three roles.

Cheers...
Argentine musician who	tries to create a mix of Tango and Jazz. His name is
Astor Piazolla and you can see a YouTube video presenting his hit: "Adios
Nonino", at the address:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCmP4bEJfOg&feature=related

Maybe it has nothing related to this list. Maybe it has...

I guess, you should reconsider your attitude here. Bert was giving you a
very polite hint, that you are better move your thoughts to a blog. If
you further want to talk with people serious interested in croquet, behave more
gmsil preferences I not recieve. Genius Peter Moore heavy in animation
frameworks says please stop as his dismissal of what is going on as
just my stupidity rather than an interesting mystery.

And, because I do not attack genius, Peter Moore, for his
misunderstanding, Bert perceives weakness and attempts to tell me to
please stop everything; Bert Freudberg is a better croquet programmer
than I and I should please stop telling my every little lesson I learn
until I have something better to tell than him and worthy of his
attention.

Is this a users list of a user must impress Bert, a programmer.

What I suppose will happen is the only topic of discussion on this
list will be people asking what is the appropriate topic of
discussion.

I will get an e mail warning me to not curse insulting people on the
list and the list will be told I have been warned and then, because
everyone on the list won't want to be in my position of being on the
edge of dismissal, the only topic on the list will be people
clamboring for a moderator and talking about what the appropriate
topic should be rather than the topic, using croquet or blender
perhaps without a mouse if you happen to forget it and Bert won't
forgive.

Ladies and gentleman : it stands Bert is what he is and I pity the
fool who wants to get on his good side.
