> It's not clear where your code is executing, and that itself suggests
> that you might be confused about the difference between creating an
> object inside the island and off.
>

I was executing it from a WorkSpace. And you are very right I didn't notice
the difference between creating an
object inside the island and off.

"code to assign self to be the Island"
> self activeSpace future addChild: (self activeIsland future new: TCube)

I guess what it comes down to is I should let the Island create the TCube
itself by sending it a future message.

I originally wanted to play with TVehicle and friends, but i couldn''t get
anything to work, so i scaled down to a cube.
But now i understand i missed a layer ...

Thanks very much for clearing this up.
> object inside the island and off.
>
> I think we need an example in the programming guide of creating an
> object from outside the island. There are some examples buried within
> the different implementations of #setup, but they I think they tend to
> obscure rather than clarify.
>
> A wide ranging thread on this is at
> https://lists.wisc.edu/read/messages?id=1545587
>
> Note that executing something in a workspace is outside the island. An
> example of adding a cube from outside the island might be to get self to
> be the harness. (How you do this depends on what Croquet Participant
> morph you're using. For example, using Simple Demo, you can use the
> Morphic halo tools menu to Explore Morph, and then click on 'harness'.)
> Then you would do
> self activeSpace future addChild: (self activeIsland future new: TCube)
> Alas, there's another layer of issues for getting right mouse to do
> something. But first things first.

In past years, this conference has had a lot of paper/presentations
about Croquet
and I expect that to continue in 2007. See you in Kyoto!

-----------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS AND WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

The Fifth International Conference on
Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5 2007)

January 24 - 26, 2007, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan
http://www.cm.is.ritsumei.ac.jp/c5-07/

Organized by
Hewlett-Packard Company
Kyoto University 21st Century COE Program for Knowledge Society
Infrastructure
Viewpoints Research Institute

SCOPE

Computers, networks, and other forms of technology are now pervasive
in our information-based society. However, most users still function
as passive consumers of technology. To evolve into a true knowledge
society, it is critical that we transform computer-based human
activities to engage users in the active process of creating,
  connecting, and collaborating together.

The C5 conference is for researchers, technology developers,
educators, and technology users who are concerned about developing
and enabling human-oriented creation, connection, and collaboration
processes. C5 is an international forum for presenting ongoing work
as well as new work currently under development and for discussing
future needs and directions in creative computing and multimedia
authoring environments. We welcome equally the submission of
technical papers and practitioner/experience reports for paper
presentations. In addition, we are adding a workshop track for the
third day of the conference and are soliciting proposals for half-day
  and full-day interactive workshops.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include but not limited to
  - Development and applications of collaboration tools and environments
  - User collaboration utilizing 3D, multimedia, and animation objects
  - Technologies for creating educational environments
  - Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) and
    Technology-Enabled Learning (TEL)
  - Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), distributed work, and
    virtual teaming
  - Hybrid technology activities, such as scientific experiments,
    instrumentation, robots, and game playing
  - Development of applications/content for non traditional learning
    environments, e.g. mentoring, peer-to-peer, "teacherless"
environments (in developing countries), e.g., $100 laptop
  - Applications and tools for education from K-12 through higher
education

PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Original papers concerned with both theory and practice are solicited.

A full paper with 8 page limit should be submitted by the paper
submission deadline. The papers are reviewed by the program comittee
and authors will be notified about acceptance. Accepted authors have
to submit a camera ready version of the full paper with 8 page limit
by the camera-ready copy deadline. Papers should follow the
formatting instructions provided by 8.5" x 11", Two-Column Format of
"IEEE Computer Society Press - Proceedings Author Guidelines" (please
refer to "INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS" at
Postscript and MS-WORD formats are acceptable.

WORKSHOP PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

The third day of the conference (Jan. 26, 2007) has been allotted
for workshops
and field trips. The workshop day is intended to offer conference
participants
the opportunity to learn more about human-oriented creation,
connection, and collaboration
processes and tools through interactive group experiences.
Workshops allow conference
participants to apply what they have learned in the plenary
sessions and paper presentations
through hands-on activities, facilitated discussions, and field
trips to schools and sites
  offering technology-enabled learning activities.

Workshop proposals should include workshop title, description of
topic, workshop organizers, workshop duration (half-day or full-day)
and estimated expenses (printing, etc.). Proposals should be sent to
the conference contact e-mail address indicated at the conference web
  page.

IMPORTANT DATES

Thanks to Mark McCahill and the other fine folks at the University of
Minnesota, at http://hedgehog.software.umn.edu:8888/PublicContribs.html
there is a new Monticello repository project for publicly developed
Croquet packages. Its description is:

"A place for Croquet developers to put things. Items here have not
been blessed for inclusion into the main distribution, use at your own
risk. Code placed here must be made available under the Croquet
license, and will be considered for inclusion in the main
distribution."

By going to the URL above, you will see that it so far contains a
somewhat modified version of Andreas Raab's VRML loader and my
MockTurtle package. In order to store your own code there, you need
to register as a member at the repository server, and add this
repository project to your Croquet image Monticello Browser repository
list.

See the Help at http://hedgehog.software.umn.edu:8888 for more
information, or send your questions to this list.

P.S. We are still looking for developers to do further work on the
VRML loader, as well as loaders for other common formats. I think
someone is probably working on OBJ and BMRT??

As reported by some, the glLoadTransposeMatrixf call fails on various
Windows drivers (https://lists.wisc.edu/read/messages?id=850793).

Now we had the same problem on one machine here (some onboard
graphics). Turns out this is due to an actual bug in loading the
ARB_transpose_matrix extension functions - they were looking up the
'glLoadTransposeMatrixf' symbol instead of 'glLoadTransposeMatrixfARB'.

Fix attached.

Croquet (Jasmine beta version) works in the 1st tier - something like the usual
JavaScript. For the tiers 2 and 3 you can use .NET, Java, Oracle, MS SQL
Server, DB2 etc. that have their security resources.
About this subject you can read our tutorial at:
http://www.dmu.com/croquet/cr20.html
BTW1: I would like to thanks all the visitors of our Croquet/Squeak tutorials
at DMU - more than 50 everyday. Soon we will have tutorials about Croquet
Hedgehog!
BTW2: If you like Croquet, you will love our new project: ATMO NQA.
ATMO NQA is a kind of simplified Croquet. Using Blender (free) you can create
3D websites having avatares, chat, portals etc. etc. It's not a commercial
product. All is free! And I believe that there are some concepts that would be
good for Croquet to have. Tutorials and demos at:
  http://www.dmu.com/dmut
Sorry: only works for Windows.
archive (which is where I normally look at them), but anyway, he is
offering a new home for the Croquet Swiki.

I guess that I am wondering if the Croquet Consortium will have the
capability or desire to provide an alternative home for a public
Swiki, or if we should just go ahead and take Cees up on his kind
offer. I am also wondering about what kind of funding the new Squeak
Foundation has. I remember seeing something about this on the Squeak
> I'm hoping that other resources will be made publically available so that the current Swiki content can be preserved and expanded for the next versions of Croquet.
>
If you want the Croquet Swiki to be moved to the SqueakFoundation.org
machine, just shout. I think we'll manage to host it :)

> With the recent vandalism of the Swiki, once again, maybe it would be a good idea for any new Swiki to require logging-in in order to edit page content, with a publically available login posted somewhere other than the Swiki, with no direct reference to it on the Swiki.

Yup - this is the strategy followed for the Squeak Swiki, the password
has been mentioned several times on this list, but that's too tough
for these vandals :-)
