I run a small company that is in the middle of a new project to create
software tools to help kids age 6-9 learn a second language. I
realize that Croquet is pre-alpha, so problems are to be expected.
Still, I hope the base is solid enough that we can create some great
demos.

I hired a summer intern who has been learning Squeak and going through
all the Croquet tutorials, but we are stuck on several issues. Dan
has outlined them here: http://vcosm.com/croquet/

Some help would be greatly appreciated. In return, we're happy to
write up the details of what we learn, e.g. turning our questions into
mini tutorials and sharing general-purpose code.

Briefly:

- if we start from an existing world and make a few changes, how do we
save them? Here's the exact steps we tried; http://vcosm.com/croquet/ChangeExistingWorld.html

- what's the best way to create a new empty world? We tried invoking
BaseWorld from Squeak: http://vcosm.com/croquet/CreateEmptyWorld.html

- after we drag a JPG into a world, how can we turn it into a static
object (without the manipulation frame)? How can we save it in the
world? http://vcosm.com/croquet/AddAPicture.html

- TPainter is cool ... can we load an image (or edit a JPG that we
dragged into the world)? Where in the source code should we look to
try to enhance the 2D-to-3D conversion? (which is a nifty feature
BTW). http://vcosm.com/croquet/UseTPainter.html

Help on these issues would be a great start, though we have a few
misc. questions here: http://vcosm.com/croquet/OtherQuestions.html

Thanks in advance,

I am back to solving problem 3 now, it was left alone for a while but becoming a crucial part now as the tree menu is used oftenly.

My problem is after clicking the tree view menu, the keyboardFocus is set to the tree and all key events will not be forwarded to the harness anymore. There is a releaseKeyboardFocus method in CTreeWidgetCostume which gets called in the method onMouseLeave but it just seems to release the focus. How do I set the keyboard focus back to the harness so that key events can be forwarded to the harness again?
> 1) What is the meaning of the angle brackets '<' and '>' and when should
> it be used? I see it is mainly used to keep a method aware of an event
> but I'm not really sure bout that.

They should only be used for adding event triggers as in:

onMouseDown
 <on: mouseDown>

onButtonFire
 <on: fire in: button>

onClockTick
 <ticking: 5>

> 2)Where can I get a full list of the Tweak syntax and more information
> about it?I have browsed the treakproject.org site but its not really
> complete. I hope to get more examples and tutorials (besides the bank
> account tutorial).

Unfortunately, there are currently no other tutorials (and I'm not in a
position to write more). As far as syntax goes, besides the annotations
the only other change is that Tweak allows "remote assignments" for
clarity, e.g.,

 circle color := Color black.

(which gets transformed into a #color: message). For syntax, that's it.
Tweak uses some of the annotations internally (like the #bewareOf:
annotations) and you don't have to worry about these at all. The only
annotations that matter are the event triggers.

> 3)I created a tree menu at the side using CTreeWidget. The problem is
> after I click on the tree menu, it steals the keyboard focus and the
> world doesn't respond to key events anymore ( it still responds to the
> mouse though). All key events are focused on the tree menu. How do I fix
> this problem?

Not sure what you're trying to achieve but maybe you can just set the
keyboard focus to whatever you'd like after the mouse up event?

Cheers,
 - Andreas

Thank you Hans for your explanation. I will soon be part of a project
merging a GIS system with observation robots deployed on a disaster
zone.
I will have a look at your work and talk with you latter if necessary.

2008/7/10 Baveco, Hans <Hans.Baveco@...>:

> The project has two goals, one is to in general enable the use of
> geographic data in on-line multi-user virtual worlds like Croquet. These
> data might be useful for the creation of the landscape, e.g. using digital
> elevation data and textures derived from landuse maps etc or just to allow
> the use of this data in the application itself (image the avatars
> discussing and editing maps projected on the wall, like in QWAQ is
> possible for other document types) - this latter boils down to the
> development of a simple on-line multi-user GIS. A second goal is to allow
> my simulation models to "live" in virtual worlds like Croquet, with the
> main focus on visualization of (spatial) model output and maybe the
> exploration of different ways of user-interaction with the models.
>
> Baveco, Hans a écrit :
>> On http://croquet-src-01.oit.duke.edu:8886/@siaEegaAzLgxZmBP/UCEIcAOK you
>> find a first version of CroquetGIS, a package that adds the ability to
>> import and visualize geographic data sets, in the formats ASCIIGRID, ESRI
>> Shapefile, ARC\INFO TINS and geo-referenced Images. More installation
>> details on the wiki (I haven't found a reliable way to load the required
>> packages automatically...). Sample data are at
>> http://webdocs.alterra.wur.nl/internet/landschap/EMM/Croquet/GIS/geo.zip
>>
>> It should basically work in the Cobalt release. When loading your own
>> datasets it is advisable to set the checkbox for "aligning to Croquet's
>> origin" - otherwise your visualization may end up very very far from
>> where your avatar is waiting! The alternative, for instance when you have
>> multiple datasets for the same area, is to make the Croquet origin
>> represent non-zero coordinates (e.g. the coordinates of the upperleft
>> corner of your map) - this is the first option in the GIS menu. (the
>> scaling is not done quite right yet for non-aligned datasets).
>> Currently, only a visualization is created of the geographic data. The
>> raw data sets can however be stored and used for other purposes than
>> visualization.
>> Comments, improvements and extensions are more than welcome,
>
> I'm interested, what are the goals of this project ?
> 3dmodel importer for croquet.

There is a working version of a VRML-Importer in the "hedgehog" monticello
respository. If your models are of VRML without PROTOs, sensors and scripts,
then chances are good to see them inside a Croquet world :)

If you like to load VRML models into "Cobalt", then there is a modificated
version of "CroquetMenuWorld->actionImport" in the Mantis bug tracker, which
let's you load VRML models with Cobalt's menu option "Things/Load from file..."

I had some nice results with coloured "materials", but couldn't get textures to
load.

Hello all,

I have created a squeaklet which I import into the "MPEG Demo (Master)" world.
I would like to have the squeaklet's processing take into account the state of
the world in which it's embedded (particularly information about avatars that
may enter the world). My initial research suggests that I need a reference to
the world's TSpace object - how can I obtain this?

If I'm going about this the wrong way, other suggestions are very welcome!

Thanks for any thoughts.

Thank you Hans for your explanation. I will soon be part of a project
merging a GIS system with observation robots deployed on a disaster
zone.
I will have a look at your work and talk with you latter if necessary.

2008/7/10 Baveco, Hans <Hans.Baveco@...>:

> The project has two goals, one is to in general enable the use of geographic data in on-line multi-user virtual worlds like Croquet. These data might be useful for the creation of the landscape, e.g. using digital elevation data and textures derived from landuse maps etc or just to allow the use of this data in the application itself (image the avatars discussing and editing maps projected on the wall, like in QWAQ is possible for other document types) - this latter boils down to the development of a simple on-line multi-user GIS. A second goal is to allow my simulation models to "live" in virtual worlds like Croquet, with the main focus on visualization of (spatial) model output and maybe the exploration of different ways of user-interaction with the models.
>
>
>
> Baveco, Hans a écrit :
>> On http://croquet-src-01.oit.duke.edu:8886/@siaEegaAzLgxZmBP/UCEIcAOK you find a first version of CroquetGIS, a package that adds the ability to import and visualize geographic data sets, in the formats ASCIIGRID, ESRI Shapefile, ARC\INFO TINS and geo-referenced Images. More installation details on the wiki (I haven't found a reliable way to load the required packages automatically...). Sample data are at http://webdocs.alterra.wur.nl/internet/landschap/EMM/Croquet/GIS/geo.zip
>>
>> It should basically work in the Cobalt release. When loading your own datasets it is advisable to set the checkbox for "aligning to Croquet's origin" - otherwise your visualization may end up very very far from where your avatar is waiting! The alternative, for instance when you have multiple datasets for the same area, is to make the Croquet origin represent non-zero coordinates (e.g. the coordinates of the upperleft corner of your map) - this is the first option in the GIS menu. (the scaling is not done quite right yet for non-aligned datasets).
>> Currently, only a visualization is created of the geographic data. The raw data sets can however be stored and used for other purposes than visualization.
>> Comments, improvements and extensions are more than welcome,
>
> I'm interested, what are the goals of this project ?

Dear Croquet developers,

I am a student at the University of Leiden and i am working on my bachelor
project. My idea was to implement an existing image/3dmodel bio-informatics
database in croquet, where several users can 'walk through' the database and
can look at the images and models that are in it, discuss, annotate and do
whatever with it.

Ive come quite far now with the implementation, however, im having difficulties
with loading 3d models into the croquet world. There is an example tutorial on
www.opencroquet.org where some .obj files are imported (they are accompanied by
.mtl files) which works fine (SanMinimum Island). But when i tried to import
some random .obj files from the internet the system hangs :(

I was hoping i could get some help/tips on how to get a working .obj / .vrml
the conditional jump bytecodes. They are limited to the range -1023 to
> accessing it from the first object? How to gain access to their variables?

You send messages. In general you cannot get access to another object's
variables unless that object allows it by providing accessor messages.
In Smalltalk all object interaction is based on message-passing, there
simply isn't a way of accessing another objects variables directly.

I've been playing with chaotic attractors of dynamical systems in
Croquet, computed on the GPU. The code is based on David Faught's
procedural textures code. Here's a movie of a simple system:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=10h2XhP0u0g

The cube is a parameter space for a parameter of the system.

The same code could also be used for other things like physics
simulations, but it's not quite ready for public release just yet.
Hello,

I think the example given by Bert here: http://www.nabble.com/Detecting-keyboard-state---finding-older-fixes-td15779144.html#a15836979

will do what you want.

Note that you will probably have to catch auto repeat keystrokes sent by Windows or Linux- see the rest of the thread.

Extending this thread hoping it helps others (also as I dig in deeper) ...
Wrote a script and first just grabbed all $_POST variables ... ends up
$_POST["screenshot"] is the only variable with what looks like would contain
the .c3d template data however when opening it in Cobalt nothing loads (no
error messages either).

Guessing Im close (those the $_POST["screenshot"] is more than likely a jpg

Found what I was looking for (publishSpaceNamed) & have changed the "url :=" to
the location I want to send the world template data to.... now looking at these

=======
result := HTTPClient httpPostMultipart: url args: args.
Transcript show: result content.

Now writing a PHP script to process what appears to be posted HTTP form
elements being sent (looked up "httpPostMultipart")? Not getting anything &

I am wanting to update the CPublishSpaceDialog class to
point to a location other than earth.software.umn.edu in
the current Cobalt code

* I am assuming this class is functional for publishing
.c3d templates?
* This is done via FTP?

I am having trouble locating "earth.software.umn.edu" to
make the change ... I am sure this is a simple process...
Just needing a bit of guidance

Any help would be appreciated !
