Credit card fraudAnyone else in the 4D world getting hit with fraud from stolen credit
card numbers? I have an Amex card that keeps getting compromised and I only use it for a select number of charges. I come to find all these weird charges on my account and talking to the merchants discover email addresses set up with my name in them to order things. I cancel the card, get a new number, and then it starts again. I would normally chalk it up to "life" except that earlier this year there was another 4D programmer who had fraudulent charges on his account, and they used an email account with *my* name to place the orders. I don't even want to guess what the odds are of that happening, but it certainly led to an awkward phone call (thanks for being understanding, David!). Anyways, once again I've had to cancel my card, and I started wondering if anyone else out there had run into anything similar. I know fraud is rampant, but the whole business of one 4D programmer name being used in fraud of another 4D programmer was just too weird. I hate to think that one of the 4D vendors (or 4D) has been compromised, but it's always possible. -- Justin Leavens, Just In Time Consulting justin@... A while back, I fell for a spoof of PayPal and gave out some info that allowed someone in Germany to buy some software with my PayPal account (and charged to my Amex). PayPal refunded the charges to my account. After I changed my passwords, all was well again. I had never fallen for a spoof before, but this one hit within minutes of my accessing and updating my PayPal account records, so my guard was temporarily down. More and more organizations are using additional verification methods (like responding to your User ID with a secret picture and secret word of your choice), so this may cut down on the spoofers' success. Re: Credit card fraudWell, you've got several possibilities:
1) Something's up at AmEx 2) Something's up with one of the vendors you're buying from 3) If you're buying online, you've been crimewared and someone has installed a keylogger on your machine, your network, etc. Good luck. ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Credit card fraudHi Justin,
One thing that my credit card does is call me if the purchase being made is: 1. out of my normal spending pattern 2. calls me if it is being used outside the country. 3. calls me if it is over a spending limit that I have specified. 4. Calls me is similar transactions are made to close together (like if I use it at the grocery store 2 days in a row..) Also, once after my identity was stolen the company called me for each and every transaction. Maybe this is a good place to start. I know it is inconvenient and holds up the transaction, but in my case they were calling my cell phone within 30 seconds of running the transaction. I feel for you, it took me a long time to clean up the mess it caused me. Sadly it turned out to be my next door neighbor. Re: Credit card fraudI stopped using PayPal 2 or 3 years ago. It never failed that, within
24 hours of using it, I'd get a request for updated info or a warning that my account had been compromised. I never answered any of them and I never had a problem, but it was clear the service had leaches and, even if it was trying, it never seemed to subdue them at all/ --www On Nov 28, 2007, at 3:09 PM, George Tiller wrote: > A while back, I fell for a spoof of PayPal and gave out some info that > allowed someone in Germany to buy some software with my PayPal account > (and charged to my Amex). RE: Credit card fraudJustin,
Yes, I've seen a bit of this. I just had to cancel a card for the second time in a couple of months. The fraud has been odd, very small charges: $1 and $2 to some oddball merchants. My CC company fraud division caught these and called me right away about them and I wasn't charged. Another charge was for a small but very complex technical programming book that even got delivered to me. The company gladly took it back and the email address that the charge was associated with was Vietnamese. It's hard to say if it was accurate. So no real damage, just a pain in having to take the time to deal with it, but compromises seem to be more and more prevalent. The CC companies seem to be enhancing their fraud detection systems as well. Life in the big city....
