Contributor mailing list. . .

Hi all, the ZF team at Zend would like to propose a new list-
'zf-contributor' for contributors to the Zend Framework project. This
should be an open list that covers development of components in both the
standard and extras libraries. The 'zf-' is intentional; we plan to
migrate all lists to this namespace when we refactor them sometime after
the 1.6 release. Please stay tuned for a separate proposal on that
refactoring.
Please keep in mind that this is a very specific initiative intended to
fill a very specific and immediate need. In addition to complementing
the IRC channel, this list will be used to coordinate the efforts of the
team here at Zend with those of the community contributors in developing
1.6 and later releases.
I will wait for feedback until Wednesday, at which point the list will
be created and I will mail the announcement and subscribe address to
this list.

Thanks!
,Wil

Is there a reason not to make it a less specific name like zf-development? It's a small comment but zf-contributors could be interpreted as contributors-only which would be counter productive ;).

Good idea.

I'm looking forward to the consolidation of everything else to zf-
general :)

Will the list only be readable by contributors? Can non contributers
also add their comments?

That sounds like a great idea. Would it also be possible potentially to just have an announce-only list that just covers code freezes and release-dates?
Thanks

Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.

A list just for code freeze and release announcements might be a bit of overkill, especially since the fw-announce list already covers the release part of that with almost no traffic otherwise. There might be another mechanism to accomplish this, however. We could have a contributors page that has all relevant contributor dates in a calendar on the wiki for the next few weeks. Keep in mind, tho, we oftentimes don’t know absolute dates until a week beforehand; we can only provide them after we’ve finalized them ourselves. J

That would be helpful also. Or perhaps someone can just announce code-freezes on fw-contributor?

Maybe I got the goal wrong...

If its focus is indeed that narrow then a general development list would go with it nicely - one of the problems we have as contributors is encouraging feedback and comment from the community.

My 2 cents are this:

On one hand I believe a narrow list (for instance just listing code-freezes and so on [hey, i can dream...]) would be very helpful for me. I have a backlog of issues that need to be addressed and often find myself wishing I knew when the next freeze is and whether we are still in a freeze now, etc...

On the other hand I think an open fw-development type of list would be a good step towards encouraging more community feedback.

Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.

The list would be focused on contributor issues, although, as I mentioned before, it will be an open list that anyone can subscribe to. A few examples of topics that I would consider appropriate for this list are:

Determining and announcing code freeze dates

Determining what we should prioritize as a group for the next release

Discussing opportunities for reuse in the development or refactoring of 2 or more components

Project team formation for larger initiatives

etc. . .

In general, any topics that are important to ZF contributors that are broader in scope than one component or initiative (much of that discussion should happen in the proposal comments) would be fair game.

I’d imagine that some non-contributors might be interested in what is said on this list, but all non-lurkers should be actively contributing or planning to contribute in some way. This list would not replace any existing list; it is intended as an entirely new channel of communication.

Thanks.

,Wil
