Configuration Question - Netto ?

I'm rebuilding an HP-11A and I'm putting in a Cambridge 302 with a TE probe along with a HP iPAQ hx7400 with XCSOAR.  I've never used any of these items prior and I'm busy reading manuals.  The XCSOAR manual showed a virtual vario that could be rigged for netto.  That requires a landscape layout.  I viewed the video linked to the web page and it referred to the vario as slow and undesirable.  Is the netto vario feature reliable and responsive?  Should I set my PDA in the portrait or landscape position on my instrument panel?  I start building the panel next week.

The vario is slow when updating from GPS, and faster if used with a
vario that produces fast serial data updates, such as Triadis
Engineering's Vega vario.  Unfortunately the Cambridge 302 only outputs
vario data once per second, so it's not very fast.

However it is still useful to have the vario data feed into XCSoar
because all the stats are more accurate, the snail trail colours etc and
thermal centering algorithms use more accurate data and you also get
more accurate wind calculations (via the zigzag and circling methods).

Personally I prefer landscape mode but it's really up to you.  I
recommend you try connecting XCSoar to Condor simulator and trying out
the various options.  In Condor, the vario data is output once per
second (and is read in via the LX device on XCSoar) so you would see
similar results when using a C302.

Hope this helps,

Johnny
