ISNN2009 CALL FOR PAPERS

The Sixth International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009) will be held in Wuhan, following the successes of previous events. Composed of three parts (Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang), Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in central China with a long history and rich heritages. During the warrior-states period (481-221 BC), Wuhan is a part in Chu Kingdom It began to prosper as a commercial town about two-thousand years ago, when it was called Yingwuzhou (Parrot beach). During the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the region became one of the most prosperous commercial centers along the Yangtze River. By the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-164 AD), Hankou was one of the four most famous cities in China. Today, Wuhan is an educational and industrial center and a hub of water and rail transportation in China.

ISNN 2009 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of neural network research and applications in related fields. The symposium will feature plenary speeches given by world renowned scholars, regular sessions with broad coverage, and special sessions focusing on popular topics.

Prospective authors are invited to contribute high-quality papers to ISNN 2009. In addition, proposals for special sessions within the technical scopes of the symposium are solicited. Special sessions, to be organized by internationally recognized experts, aim to bring together researchers in special focused topics. Papers submitted for special sessions are to be peer-reviewed with the same criteria used for the contributed papers. Researchers interested in organizing special sessions are invited to submit formal proposals to ISNN 2009. A special session proposal should include the session title, a brief description of the scope and motivation, names, contact information and brief biographical information on the organizers.

Authors are invited to submit full-length papers (10 pages maximum) by the submission deadline through the online submission system. Potential organizers are also invited to enlist five or more papers with cohesive topics to form special sessions. The submission of a paper implies that the paper is original and has not been submitted under review or is not copyright-protected elsewhere and will be presented by an author if accepted. All submitted papers will be refereed by experts in the field based on the criteria of originality, significance, quality, and clarity. The authors of accepted papers will have an opportunity to revise their papers and take consideration of the referees' comments and suggestions. Papers presented at ISNN 2009 will be published in the EI-indexed proceedings (Springer LNCS) and some selected good papers will be included in special issues of several SCI-indexed journals.

Probability/Statistics of Pitch and Interval likelihood in music.

I have two charts. One chart has the likelihood that a musical pitch will occur in "good" western melodies. Each is weighted with a number. In the key of C Major the notes are weighted like this;

C=5, D=3.5, E=2, F=4, G=4.5, A=3.5, B=4.

I have another chart with the frequency of intervals that occur within "good" western melodies. They are weighted like this;

Unison=5 (the next note is the same as the previous note)
Minor Second=5.5
Major Second=15
Minor Third=2.5
Major Third=2
Perfect Fourth=3
Tritone=0
Perfect Fifth=1.5
Minor Sixth=.125
Major Sixth=.25
Minor Seventh=.25
Major Seventh=.25
Octave=1

I want to combine this data to find out the likelihood of all the possible combinations of motion. I'm looking for the answer to all of the questions below;

What is the likelihood that C will move to D? The answer would be expressed something like C has a 24 chances out of 123 to move to D.
What is the likelihood that C will move to the E above?
what is the likelihood that C will move to the E below?
What is the likelihood that Middle C will move to F above? to the F below? to G above? to G below? to A above? to A below? to B above, to B below? to the octave above to the octave below?

but we're not finished.

What is the likelihood that D will move to the C below?
What is the likelihood that will will move to the C above?
What is the likelihood that D will stay on D?
What is the likelihood that D will move to E above? to the E below?
to F above, to the F below? to G above, to the G below? to A above, to the A below, to B above, to B below?

What is the likelihood that E will move to C the below? to the C above?
What is the likelihood that E will move to D above? to D below?

Etc...

The difficulty I'm having with the question is correctly graphing the problem. I've tried several times and each time I notice something I missed before in order to get the right answer. Especially confusing to me is the Frequency of notes graph. I thought I could put the name of the pitches on the left hand side of the page with D above at the bottom since the Major second was the most important interval then mark up lines on the graph paper the appropriate number (15).
Then at the top of that write the word Unison since that is the second most important interval continuing on up in that manner. On the right hand side of the page I wrote C on the bottom across from the first item in the other graph. Then I counted up the appropriate number of lines. then wrote the next two common pitches E and G. continuing up like that.
Then I drew a line between C the pitch to the unison interval in the other graph looking for the point in-between that would show the likelihood that the pitch would stay on the same pitch based on what pitch your on in a melody? What I want to know is when I'm looking at the melody I'm writing and I'm in the middle of writing it and, for example, I'm on the note D, then what is the likelihood that D will move to any other note?
It has the greatest chance of going back to C since D is a less important pitch and since the motion of the Major Second is more important than the motion repeating it again. But I want to know the exact percentage of every possibility.

Tall order. I know. But it's fun and interesting.

attracting participation from reputed researchers from all over the
world.

The 14th HiPC Conference held in Goa, India, in December 2007, had 53
contributed papers chosen from 253 submissions from 31 countries. The
conference included technical paper sessions, keynotes from leading
HPC researchers, a poster paper session, an exhibition, an industry
session with presentations from leading HPC companies, a HPC user
community meeting, tutorials on hot topics in computing and
networking, and several workshops focused on emerging areas. The 13th
HiPC Conference held in Bangalore, India, in December 2006, had 52
contributed papers that were selected from over 335 submissions from
40 countries, and the 12th HiPC Conference held in Goa, India, in
December 2005, had 50 contributed papers that were selected from over
362 submissions from 30 countries. The HiPC attendance is
approximately 300 with a good mix of participants from India and the
rest of the world. Further information about HiPC 2008 and the HiPC
series of meetings is available on the conference website at

HiPC 2008 will focus on the design and analysis of high performance
computing and networking systems and their scientific, engineering,
and commercial applications. In addition to technical sessions

MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES

Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may
not exceed 14 letter size (8.5 x 11) pages including figures, tables
and references. Formatting requirements are 12-point font size, single
column, single spaced, with margins of 1 inch on each of the four
sides. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned
without review. Authors should submit the manuscript in PDF format and
make sure that the file will print on a printer that uses letter size
(8.5 x 11) paper. The official language of the meeting is English.

Manuscript submission will start on April 5, 2008. Manuscript
submission procedures will then be available over the Web at
http://www.hipc.org. Electronic submissions must be in the form of a
readable PDF file. Manuscripts must be received by May 19,
2008. Manuscripts should demonstrate current research in any area of
high performance computing. All manuscripts will be reviewed and will
be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength,
significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to
the conference attendees.

Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is
not currently under review for any other conference or journal.
Papers not following these guidelines will be rejected without review
and further action may be taken, including (but not limited to)
notifications sent to the heads of the institutions of the authors and
sponsors of the conference. Submissions received after the due date,
exceeding length limit, or not appropriately structured may also not
be considered. Authors may contact the Program Chair at the address
below for further information or clarification. Notification of review
decisions will be mailed by July 14, 2008. Camera-ready papers are due
by August 18, 2008. The proceedings will be published by
Springer-Verlag, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, and will be
available at the conference.

STUDENT RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

HiPC 2008 will feature the first student research symposium on High
Performance Computing (HPC) aimed at stimulating and fostering student
research, and providing an international forum to highlight student
research accomplishments. The symposium will also expose students to
the best practices in HPC in academia and industry. The one-day
symposium will feature brief presentations by student authors on their
research, followed by a poster exhibit. Short invited talks by leading
HPC researchers/practitioners will be included in the program. The
symposium reception will provide an opportunity for students to
interact with HPC researchers and practitioners (and recruiters) from
academia and industry. To be considered, students should submit a 5
page extended abstract of their research. Submission procedures will
be available at the Student Symposium web site, accessible from

The 15th annual IEEE International Conference on High Performance
Computing (HiPC 2008) will be held in Bangalore, India, during
December 17-20, 2008. It will serve as a forum to present the current
work by researchers from around the world, and act as a venue to
provide stimulating discussions and highlight high performance
computing (HPC) activities in Asia. The conference has a history of
attracting participation from reputed researchers from all over the
world.

HiPC 2008 will focus on the design and analysis of high performance
computing and networking systems and their scientific, engineering,
and commercial applications. In addition to technical sessions
consisting of contributed papers, the conference will include invited
presentations, a poster session, tutorials, and vendor presentations.

Upon numerous requests for postponing the deadlines of paper submissions and special session
proposals, we extended deadlines to:
Special session proposal submission: March 30, 2008

Other deadlines remain unchanged as before.

Following the successes of previous events, the fifth International Symposium on Neural
Networks (ISNN2008) will be held in Beijing, which has been the capital of China for
about five hundred years, and is now one of the largest international cities in the world.
Nowadays, as the cultural, educational and high-tech centre of the nation, Beijing
possesses many world-class conference facilities, communication infrastructures,
and hotels, and has successfully hosted many important international conferences.
In addition, Beijing is an ideal place for sightseeing. Its rich culture and historical
attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and the
Temple of Heaven will provide participants with unique opportunities for social activities.
Besides, the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing during Aug. 8-24 and the Paralympic
Games will be held during Sept. 6-17. You are cordially invited to witness these great feasts.
We will organize participants to visit the Olympic venues during or after the Symposium.

All submitted papers will be refereed by experts in the field based on the criteria of
originality, significance, quality, and clarity. The authors of accepted papers will have an
opportunity to revise their papers and take consideration of the referees' comments and suggestions.
Papers presented at ISNN2008 will be published in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS)
and will be indexed by EI Compendex. Some selected top papers will be included in special issues of
several journals. Up to now, the following journals have approved to publish special issues for ISNN2008:

The 15th annual IEEE International Conference on High Performance

world.

The 14th HiPC Conference held in Goa, India, in December 2007, had 53
contributed papers chosen from 253 submissions from 31 countries. The
conference included technical paper sessions, keynotes from leading
HPC researchers, a poster paper session, an exhibition, an industry
session with presentations from leading HPC companies, a HPC user
community meeting, tutorials on hot topics in computing and
networking, and several workshops focused on emerging areas. The 13th
HiPC Conference held in Bangalore, India, in December 2006, had 52
contributed papers that were selected from over 335 submissions from
40 countries, and the 12th HiPC Conference held in Goa, India, in
December 2005, had 50 contributed papers that were selected from over
362 submissions from 30 countries. The HiPC attendance is
approximately 300 with a good mix of participants from India and the

HiPC 2008 will focus on the design and analysis of high performance

Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that

MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES

Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may
not exceed 14 letter size (8.5 x 11) pages including figures, tables
and references. Formatting requirements are 12-point font size, single
spaced or higher, with margins of at least 1 inch on each of the four
sides. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned
without review. Authors should submit the manuscript in PDF format and
make sure that the file will print on a printer that uses letter size
(8.5 x 11) paper. The official language of the meeting is English.

Manuscript submission will start on April 5, 2008. Manuscript
submission procedures will then be available over the Web at
http://www.hipc.org. Electronic submissions must be in the form of a
readable PDF file. Manuscripts must be received by May 12,
2008. Manuscripts should demonstrate current research in any area of
high performance computing. All manuscripts will be reviewed and will
be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength,
significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to
the conference attendees.

Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is
not currently under review for any other conference or journal.
Papers not following these guidelines will be rejected without review
and further action may be taken, including (but not limited to)
notifications sent to the heads of the institutions of the authors and
sponsors of the conference. Submissions received after the due date,
exceeding length limit, or not appropriately structured may also not
be considered. Authors may contact the Program Chair at the address
below for further information or clarification. Notification of review
decisions will be mailed by July 14, 2008. Camera-ready papers are due
by August 18, 2008. The proceedings will be published by
Springer-Verlag, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, and will be
available at the conference.

STUDENT RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

HiPC 2008 will feature the first student research symposium on High
Performance Computing (HPC) aimed at stimulating and fostering student
research, and providing an international forum to highlight student
research accomplishments. The symposium will also expose students to
the best practices in HPC in academia and industry. The one-day
symposium will feature brief presentations by student authors on their
research, followed by a poster exhibit. Short invited talks by leading
HPC researchers/practitioners will be included in the program. The
symposium reception will provide an opportunity for students to
interact with HPC researchers and practitioners (and recruiters) from
academia and industry. To be considered, students should submit a 5
page extended abstract of their research. Submission procedures will
be available at the Student Symposium web site, accessible from

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

5th INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
PARALLEL MATRIX ALGORITHMS AND APPLICATIONS (PMAA'08)
June 20-22, 2008, Neuchatel, Switzerland

This international workshop aims to be a forum for an exchange of
ideas, insights and experiences in different areas of parallel
computing in which matrix algorithms are employed. The Workshop will
bring together experts and practitioners from diverse disciplines with
a common interest in matrix computation. Topics of interest include,
but are not limited to, the following:

* Parallel algorithms for dense, structured and sparse matrices.
* Parallel environments and tools for enabling matrix applications.
* Large scale applications from diverse fields which have an emphasis
on parallel matrix computation.
* Performance modeling.
* Algorithmic engineering & complexity (matrix algorithms based on
parallel models of computation such as PRAM, systolic arrays, etc.)

The PMAA'08 will take place at the same time with the workshop of
ERCIM Working Group on "Computing & Statistics".

Authors are invited to submit an abstract presenting original research
on any aspect of the workshop themes. After the workshop, selected
peer-reviewed papers will be published in special issues of Parallel
Computing and Applied Numerical Mathematics.
