Choosing artist from a various artist with many artists per track

OK, I'm stuck.  How do I choose an artist when there isn't a clear
single artist?

Here's a CD, Paris Musette:

http://www.amazon.com/Paris-Musette-Various-Artists/dp/B00004UO4N/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1221630745&sr=1-1

These tracks are mostly modern (1990) renditions of older French music
(many written in the 1930s and 1940s).  Some of the titles are written
more recently in the style of older songs.

Each track has a different combination of artists. Didi Duprat is on the
guitar on most, but not all tracks.  He is somewhat featured.

Each of the tracks has one or more accordion players, or perhaps
bandoneon.  Clearly the accordion artist is important to each track.
The guitarist is also important, though a couple of tracks do not have a
guitarist.  The other musicians may also be important.  A couple of the
tracks list a group (La Quatour d'Accordeons de Paris).

Each track lists the title, the composer, Ed. (is that copyright
holder?).

For the musicians, the accordionist is listed first, followed by the
guitarist, and other musicians.  If there is a singer, s/he is listed
before the accordionist.

Who is the artist?

1. Perhaps the composer is easiest.

2. Or maybe on or all accordionists. (I play accordion slightly, so this
sounds reasonable).

3.  Guitarist, maybe, since Duprat is somewhat featured.

Otherwise, I don't know.

I'd set it as Various Artists. The composers change, the performers change :-)

"Ed." is the publisher of the score. I don't know if this is mandatory
in French law, but most (all?) records published in France have this
mention.

Thanks.  I sort of dislike Various Artists for tracks, but don't have a
brilliant alternative.

I'm still half tempted to use the composer as the track artist.

All tracks are from the same composer? Not that it changes much, MB
rules say that the composer should be used only for Classical and
SoundTracks.

No, each track has a different composer.  My impression is that Various
Artists is for the entire disc, and not for an individual track.

Releases where the TrackArtists are unrelated to each other (usually
compilations), are attached to the artist "Various Artists".

Sorry, I thought you were speaking of the Release Artist. Now I
understand your problem! I don't have any idea. The composer seems the
easiest solution, but using the composer as track artist for a musical
genre where the composer is never used as Release Artist seems a
little strange.
