Hi
We are intending to sail our motor barge from mid Holland to London
during early April. The channel crossing from Dunkuerqe  to London Docks
is anticipated to be mid April,  inland progress and weather permitting!
We are ICC qualified for the inland trip but  need an accompanying
qualified skipper for the the channel crossing and Thames estuary.

Is there anyone out there able to help? You will find details of the
barge on our website www.gregjoysbarge.com

Best wishes

Greg and Joy Coates

why do you need a 'qualified skipper'? Is your insurance company insisting on
this, and what qualifications do they require?

Hello Alastair
Thank you for your prompt response. I have not been told by our Dutch
insurers that it is a requirement but I understand from previous
postings on this list that for a crossing with such a high volume of
traffic a qualification with a certificated knowledge of coastal
navigation such as the RYA Day Skipper Course is at least highly
desirable if not essential. Perhaps someone with professional knowledge
could comment on this.

I have gathered from conversations with some DBA members that there are
members out there who might be interested in this because they enjoy an
interesting/challenging opportunity to get afloat? Or maybe not...I
don't know - hence my message.

Kind regards

Greg

Wise words Greg.

When you have a tanker on your port bow, a cruise liner on the  starboard bow
and a galloping cross channel ferry astern, all on  closing courses, how nice
it is to feel the gentle tap on the shoulder as a  thoroughly experienced old
salt reassuringly says "Ok son, I have  control"

Been there, got the t-shirt!

I don't think it is a requirement, merely sensible to have someone with
experience on board.

I've done two coastal trips in barges. The first was from central london, down
the thames and up the coast to the humber. I did all the navigation planning, and
we were lucky with a weather window.

the second trip was across the north sea from Den Helder to the humber, in a
sailing barge.

I think that it is perfectly possible for level-headed, practical people to
tackle the short hop, without hiring a 'professional'. Study the rules of the
road, the tides and the weather. Make sure you have contingency plans for make do
repairs if you have a mechanical failure.
