May I say I appreciate the enhancement to the 'Replace Text' feature?
Used to be that when I checked the 'Prompt on replace' box, the dialog
box often covered up the text about to be replaced.  Now it lands nearby
instead.

Nice touch,

Dan

Unfortunately, the replace now has lost most of its useful features.

(1) If you higlight text and choose replace, that text is not in the
replace box, and

(2) You cannot click on the document underneath the text box to
select either this text or the text to replace it with.

This makes the replace box totally useless IMHO, since 99.9% of the
time, I want to replace the existing text with other text on the same
page.

Please fix this ASAP as this is a nightmare. I now have to copy the
text I want to replace with, search through the page manually, and
replace the text one-by-one (and hope I don't miss any copies of the
text).

Thanks.  Paul Knowles

1 is fixed for next beta. You can enable the "Find text at cursor" option as a workaround.

Great. How about (2)? Very often, I want to modify a script,
replacing one table name with another.

As mentioned the other day when this last came up, it's not a trivial change and will take a little more time than we have this release to address it. For next release petition those that be that you would like to see this as a higher priority so that we can get some more useful features/fixes into Toad than what typically appears on the todo list ;-)

First, the caveat: I'm not familiar with directories identified in Oracle as I simply have not really run into situations that required them.

I imagine you're looking at a couple of access rights - at least one for sure.
a) Who has access to said directory at the OS level where the database resides.
b) I imagine Oracle itself also designates who has access to use that particular aspect much as any other object in Oracle.

You would need to check with your OS Admin to get the answer to A, and check with your DBA to get the answer to B.

If you have the DB Admin module, there is a tab on the schema browser that will show you privileges and let you change them.

If you don't have the DB Admin module, then you can use this query:

select *
from dba_tab_privs
where owner = 'SYS'
and table_name = 'SBTD1'

Morning Shivanand,

Ok, I know I'm a bit late in replying - but I've been on holiday for two
weeks and now I'm back!

You said :

John Dorlon replied :

>> select *
>> from dba_tab_privs

>> and table_name = 'SBTD1'

My $0.02 :

When you create a new directory object in the database only the user who
created it can do anything with it. The owner can read from and write to
files in the corresponding server directory - provided that the OS user
that the database runs under (usually oracle) has the required
privileges to the filesystem on the server.

John's query will only give you directory objects that are owned by the
SYS user. If your login to the database has been granted CREATE
DIRECTORY privs, then it too can create a directory - but John's query
will not display the details. You would obvioulsy have to change the
'SYS'part to match that of your own schema name.

One thing to beware of if you create directories as the SYS user -
objects owned by SYS are not exported unless you do a FULL export of the
database. This means, if you refresh a database from an export (which is
not FULL) then you may find that your refresh fails because you no
longer have any directories. For best results, always create the
directory as the user you wish to access them by and not as the SYS or
SYSTEM users - that way, when you export your schema, you also export
your directories.

On import into the other database, you will also import the directories
-= but they will still be pointing at the folder paths identical to the
exporting server - so you will need to set up an identical path on the
other server as well to have them work.

Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]

user.

But:
>>All directories are created in a single namespace and are not owned by an
individual schema.<<

See :
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_5007.htm#SQLRF01207

So I do not think your statement is entirely correct??

I read the docs as follows:  "every directory has the same owner: SYS."
<<== correct??

Morning Rob,

>> Also just back from holiday and I hope you had as nice a

I might have done - depends on how good a time you had I suspect! :-)

>> >>All directories are created in a single namespace and are
>> not owned by an individual schema.<<
You telling me to RTFM perhaps? ;-)

>> So I do not think your statement is entirely correct??
No, you are correct and I'm wrong - again! (Apologies to the OP) It
seems as if the directories are indeed created under the SYS user
regardless of who actually creates them :

SQL> show user
USER is "NORMAN"

SQL> create directory norman as '/u00/oracle/admin/lccsdev/bdump';
Directory created.

SQL> select * from dba_directories;

OWNER                          DIRECTORY_NAME
------------------------------ ------------------------------
DIRECTORY_PATH
------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
SYS                            NORMAN
/u00/oracle/admin/lccsdev/bdump

I stand corrected - thanks.

Makes me wonder why there is an OWNER column though, if everything is
owned by SYS, why bother?

>> I read the docs as follows:  "every directory has the same
>> owner: SYS."  <<== correct??
Certainly looks that way to me.

Even better, there is a DBA_DIRECTORIES and an ALL_DIRECTORIES, but no
USER_DIRECTORIES. Hmmm.

Thanks for pointing out the errors of my ways. I had never noticed that
before. What a strange way to do things. This implies that a directory
can never be exported unless a FULL export is taken. In order to avoid
being wrong again (!) I've exported my user and there is no directory in
the export file, as suspected.

This is something I need to be aware of in future.

Cheers,
Norm. [TeamT]
