Both, the submitter of the problem report and Andy Polyakov
state that the effect is harmless.
Andy replies in http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2008/07/msg00092.html

This leaves room for two theories:
- Either you found a different problem.
- The misburn resp. non-readability
is not due to the dramatic error message.

You should try whether other BD drives can read
the media - if you have more than one such drive.

If you are interested in testing, i would prepare
a development upload of libburn+cdrskin which is
willing to write to POW formatted BD-R.
That formatting would have to be done by dvd+rw-format,
for now.

By this software you could test whether the readability
problem is related to the "incompatible command".
The drawback is that you would be the first tester of
libburn on BD-R and that i got only theoretical knowledge
about those media. It _should_ work much like BD-RE.

bd-r burning error

Hi!

I have an LG GGC-H20L bd writer, kernel 2.6.26, arch linux, growisofs 7.1, able to write bd-re media fine with:

growisofs -Z /dev/sr0 -R -J /some/path

but using the same command doesn't close bd-r disks, saying input-output error ASC=5h incompatible command, and this disks are wrongly written, can't read the files back from them.

I've tried several media, but it produces the same error. Firmware is 1.02.

Any help appreciated.

Why don't you use cdrecord to write the medium?

Cdrecord (I am talking about the original software - not the defective clone
from Debian) writes DVD media in the way that is expected.

Did you use the official mkisofs or did you use the defectove clone from Debian
that is published with most recent Linux distributions?

installed in automobiles. However, the very same images created with either
Nero (Linux) or with the Windows equivalents are % compatible. Not sure if
this is a problem with growisofs or the underlying mkisofs/genisoimage.

Of course, I would consider this a failing of the players themselves or the
media if not for the fact the Nero (Linux) and Windows utilities produce
working DVDs using the same media.

xorriso, a ISO 9660 Rock Ridge filesystem manipulator.

It creates, loads, manipulates and writes ISO 9660
filesystem images with Rock Ridge extensions. It can
load the management information of existing ISO images
and it writes the session results to optical media or
to filesystem objects.
Vice versa xorriso is able to restore file objects from
ISO 9660 filesystems.

A special property of xorriso is that it needs neither
an external ISO 9660 formatter program nor an external
burn program for CD or DVD but rather incorporates the

a burn backend for CD, DVD and BD-RE.

This release accepts any path as drive address. The filesystem
object behind the given path has nevertheless to be a device node
capable of SG_IO which governs a CDROM device.
The drive scan additionally examines /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
whether it tells drives which were not found by examination of
/dev/hd*, /dev/sr*, /dev/scd* (resp. /dev/sg* on kernel 2.4).

System requirements:
Linux with kernel 2.4 or 2.6.

The ECMA stuff is very physical and does not
apply much to drive control and burn programming.
This is rather documented in the SCSI standards. The
CD/DVD/BD specific aspects are in sub section MMC.
I use as reference

Another thing is emulated multi-session on overwriteable
DVD/BD media: growisofs and xorriso learn about the
current session size from the ISO superblock (ECMA-119
8.4 Primary Volume Descriptor), add a new session and patch
the superblock so that it points to the new session.

When is a RID code produced by a drive ?

There is a discussion about this over at
"CDfreaks/Forums/Optical Storage Technical Discussions"
but so far the "experts" over there have not been able to answer the
question.

This guy who posted has some type of a duplication business. He wants to
keep track of which discs are recorded by his various drives. He wants to
use RID codes to do this.

He is writing data only (not audio) using TAO with data block type Mode 2
CD-ROM XA, form 1. He does not close the session, he leaves it appendable.
Is a RID code produced during this recording ?
If so, which scsi command(s) do you use to read the RID code data ?

cdrtools-2.01.01a45 patches from NetBSD pkgsrc

Hi Joerg, hi everyone!

Some time ago I've taken over the task of keeping cdrtools in NetBSD
pkgsrc up-to-date. In this function I've inherited quite a few patches
and also wrote some of my own.

The current pkgsrc version is 2.01.01a45, the patches apply cleanly
against it.

I'll describe shortly what I know about them. Perhaps some of them can
be integrated, or you can suggest improvements on them that I can take
over into pkgsrc.

patch-aa, patch-ab, patch-ad: cdda2wav and cdrecord use realtime
functions (e.g. sched_setscheduler), which, on NetBSD, live in librt.
These patches are part of the support for this in the package. The
pkgsrc infrastructure passes in the correct value of $librt via the
build environment.
Instead, the build framework should test, if the symbol lives in librt
and link against it automatically. However, I'm not quite sure how you
want this test integrated into the build framework.

patch-ac:
NetBSD has machine/endian.h (and also sys/endian.h, which is the

Code to find the cd devices on NetBSD. Judging by the name in the

questions about it. util.h and libutil are needed for getrawpartition().

patch-aj:
The comment says it all: REQUEST SENSE was already done by the
kernel and the result just needs to be fetched.

patch-cf, patch-cg:
They were added with the message "Support files over 2 GB size." by

isoinfo extracts files at the painful rate of 1 sector at a time.
This patch speeds up file extraction significantly by using a much

Two additional notes:
In pkgsrc exist rules that symlink
DEFAULTS/Defaults.dragonfly and DEFAULTS_ENG/Defaults.dragonfly
to the resp. Defaults.freebsd file -- for cdrtools purposes, DragonFly
behaves exactly the same as FreeBSD.

lib_intl is set to "" by the configure script, but it should be

packet-writing write-once media

Hallo,

Anybody successfully packet writing to a write-once media like DVD-R? I see it's possible with some windows programs and linux kernel claims to support UDF 0x0150 which introduced VAT but I can't figure out how to prepare the media for the writing with neither cdrwtool, dvd+rw-format, mkudffs (and I searched a lot).

As well I don't have a windows machine around to try preparing media on it and then put in my drive. Would it be possible for somebody to prepare a DVD+/-R media for packet writing on windows and post some headers one can write?

Main target was to implement correct permission for
"invented" directories in UDF and to correclty implement
the max. file name length in UDF.

Note that Cdda2wav now stabilizes the -interactive option

Wie bereits diversen Zeitungen zu lesen war, zweifeln zum 60. Jubiläum der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft mehr als 40 Prozent der Deutschen daran, ob diese im Zeitalter der Globalisierung noch zeitgemäß ist. Weitere 35 Prozent sind in dieser Frage unsicher. Was aber würden die Bürger ändern, wenn Sie es könnten?

Die Bertelsmann Stiftung, die Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung und die Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung haben Anfang diesen Jahres 350 zufällig ausgewählte Bürger aus allen Schichten und Regionen Deutschlands eingeladen. In einem mehrmonatigen Diskussionsprozess entwickelten sie ein "BürgerProgramm Soziale Marktwirtschaft" als Konzept einer wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und gleichzeitig sozial gerechten Marktwirtschaft. Nun liegt das verabschiedete BürgerProgramm vor. Die Arbeit der Teilnehmer des BürgerForums wurde in einer Repräsentativumfrage von einer herausragenden Mehrheit der Deutschen unterstützt.

Dieses BürgerProgramm wurde alle Abgeordneten Deutschlands Ende Juli zu gesendet. Allen Fraktionen des Bundestages wurde dieses Programm schon am 20. Juni, dem Jahrestag der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft, von einer Bürgerdelegation offiziell übergeben.
