Hi Zack,

this might be a long integer overrun. To sort the bug out, it could be
valuable to know if it is just a matter of display - or also in
storage: Could you possibly check the raw XML file? Or are you using
any database backends?

Congratulations on working on the program!

    i've been using this program in both Windows XP and now, finally, Linux, specifically PCLinuxOS. i've recommended that it be included in the repos and the OS maintainers say that it is almost ready to be listed!

    i've noticed that someone is working on a more advanced version of it. Congratulations! At this point i just use it to catalog my CDs and now DVDs that i have my files backed up to. i have trouble because the program is so great that it selects all the files but i'd like it to be able to Search on multiple words, like food and potatoes, for example.

    Anyway, i really like the program and hope it can be improved on. i really like it because it's so fast! It just runs, zip, zip. i also like it because the format that it saves in is readable by my OpenOffice program; it's not in some strange format that i can't get access to.

    So, have a great week and congrats again on your efforts to improve it. Hope you can find the maintainers, or at least start a fork... :D

Do you just want to use / test cdcat (unicode version or version 1.01b?)
or do you want to experiment with it (look at the code, change some
code) and therefore compile it by yourself?
The things you already installed are only needed, if you want to compile
it by yourself for which some experience is needed.

If you just want to test/use cdcatWin, you should either take the cdcat
1.01b windows binary from the homepage or try the binary I created for
the unicode alpha, which is UNOFFICIAL because I'm not the maintainer
and therefore can't release files in the name of the project. But he was
absent quite some time...
However. Here is the link again:

But, although it seems quite stable to me, it is an alpha and therefore
not intended for being used for anything else than testing. Use at your

If you want to compile it by yourself, this is what you should do next.

If you want to use Qt 4.3.2 you will need "my" version of cdcat, which I
ported to Qt4. Of course it's UNOFFICIAL, too.

Right you are - any backend could do. Now that OOo 2.x has database
frontends.

Yet another idea: provide the desktop search API used by strigi and
others - so there can be a (really fast!) offline search.

Maybe there can be common code with amarok.

When this is gonna be a (friendly) fork (or maybe a relaunch) we should
start considering a new name.

WhereAreThou could be just one suggestion. Outues for the French ;)

Funny you should mention this :)

I started a new cd cataloging project in Python. It implements exactly
that: a sqlite database and plugins support. If you want to check it

The thing is, I also like cdcat, specially the interface (mine could
use a lot more work in this area :), and also there is something about
the XML catalog that I like, that is, it is easy to read and
understand, but I see where sqlite has more advantages too.

Yes I did. But I don't want to submit a patch for every change at this

The sourcecode now compiles using Qt4 (4.2.3). As far as I remember I
ran into some problems when using Qt 4.0 on my notebook.
At the moment I believe, that most of the features of cdcat-1.01b now
also work in cdcat unicode. But I'm not sure.
For example I changed some things in the find dialog. Now if you do a
case insensitive search for "ä" (ä) it also matches "Ä" (Ä) as it should.

One reason for not contacting the maintainer, is me thinking about some
deeper changes.
cdcat is based on a global tree structure holding the data of a catalog
in the RAM. As mentioned before another possibility for working with the
data would be a sqlite database.
I think the benefits would be smaller loading time for catalogs and a
smaller memory footprint (haven't tested this yet). But it could give a
performance impact, when working on the catalog after loading.
The other thing I'm thinking about would be a plugin interface (for
example retrieving information from files like mp3 or avi could be made
as a plugin instead of hardcoding this support).
Both changes would mean to throw away big parts of the code, I believe
(many functions work on the tree structure, that wouldn't exist
anymore). Therefore I'm thinking about starting a new project.
But I'm still unsure. I really like cdcat.

I think that wont work, as I never got any response when trying to
contact the maintainers.

I am glad to see someone working on cdcat again. I am still using it daily and

Patch for misc.cpp

Hi!
I'm currently working on cdcat (unicode alpha) and began to port it to
Qt4. I want to extent it.
After porting it, I started cdcat and it kept crashing everytime when I
tried to add some media.
I found out, that the reason for this is a buffer overrun in misc.cpp
(openDevice function). It exists in 1.01b, too.

Patch file is attached. It works for both cdcat versions.

Is there anyone still involved in this? I'm looking for a way to make
CdCat support Unicode characters. Is there any possibility anyone
could do a patch for it?
