I always thought that in the EOS DSLRs the image sensors are made by
Canon. The only definitive info I can find is in the 20D White Pages
where it states that the image sensor is CMOS made by Canon.

Can anybody straighten us out?

BTW he also says Nikon uses Kodak sensors.......
> So... has anyone on the list had any experience buying a lens
> refurbished by Canon, and any experience -- good or bad -- to share?

Never bought a second hand lens refurbished from Canon, never seen any here
in Canada.

Generally you should get a good price reduction but sometimes at the expense
of a shorter warranty, and sometimes it's overall cheaper to buy an extended
warranty from a 3rd party warranty firm to cover the duration you are
comfortable with and still pay less overall.

Some credit cards offer automatic warranty extension, mine "doubles the
warranty up to an additional one year", so you get a 6 month extension if
the OEM warranty was 6 months, but you only get one year extension even if
the OEM warranty is 2 years.

Note however that some credit card does not cover "refurbished" items under
this warranty, I've lucked out once getting the battery of a refurbished
laptop replaced ($$$), yet was refused later when the LCD screen started
acting up.
> gear. :-) Santa gave me an IOU for the lens I've had my eye on, and
> although I have the go-ahead to buy it new, since it's my money too, I
> am hoping to save a bit by buying a second-hand version.
>
> So... has anyone on the list had any experience buying a lens
> refurbished by Canon, and any experience -- good or bad -- to share?
>
> Thanks,
>
> Pattie

Hi Pattie,

Santa brought me a Huey......

I have two experiences with Canon refurbed lenses. One is second hand,
a friend bought a couple of things, a 10D and some leneses, from B&H
that were "used" and rated condition 10. He found out that when B&H
rates a used Canon product, lens or body, a 10 is is either a store
sample or a Canon salesperson's sample. In either case Canon goes over
them and they are like new but can't be sold as new. My friend is very
happy with the items and told me about the ratings, etc.....

The other is my experience. I bought my 28-135 IS from B&H as used and
condition 10. It came in a Canon box that was marked used. The lens
was like new and has worked flawlessly since I bought it a few years
ago. The cost savings was pretty good too.

If I saw a lens or body that I was eyeing , and it was on B&H's used
list at condition 10, I would not hesitate to order it.

Bob

--

                           /////
                          ( O O )
Curiosity killed the cat although I was a suspect for a while........

After studying the fascinating concept of layered/stacked images, to
achieve an infinite large DOF, and vaguely recalling that *some*
later DSLR's (or even compacts?) have focus-bracketing....

....I was wondering how long it would take before this stacking-
software might become part of the OEM image-software, external or
internal, in combination with such focus-bracketing.

Some of these stacking programs & fascinating samples:
lenses, like dedicated microscope stuff....if external image-software
can detect the exact sharp area within a layer, then internal
software should be able to give a signal when you run out of the
singular DOF (overlapping DOF is recommended).

Willem
(wondering how well this would work with scanned analog images,
despite the recommendation to use only straight-digital....if only to
test this with 6x12cm panorama frames....turning a Noblex with focus-
option or even macro-diopters into a much more interesting device)

Hi Willem-Jan,

A friend with one of Canon's 65mm macro lenses (usable in the 1:1 to 5:1
range), used it on my EOS 10D and took something like 5 or 6 focus stacked
frames for each of a stereo pair of some quite small items in the extreme
close-up region. Both sets were then put through.Heliconfocus, and printed
as a stereo pair. The result on some of his samples were quite stunning
stereo images of items such as lichen.
> The flash mount is mounted with 4 screws. You can acces these screws by
> removing the black inside part of the flash-mount. You can do this bij lifting
The flash mount is mounted with 4 screws. You can acces these screws by removing the black inside part of the flash-mount. You can do this bij lifting up at the back side (2x) and then slide it off. It is a simple metal spring that covers the screws.
Tighten the screws and remount the black spring, and you are ready.
> The flash mount on my 20D has become very loose indeed. I don't suppose
> anyone else on the list has had this happen and have any recommendations
> how to fix it. The camera's out of warranty.
> If not, any pointers on how much it's going to cost to fix (GBP).

>>My current gripe with my 5D is that the central AF spot is ever so
>>slightly
>>lower than the rectangle marker in the viewfinder. Has lead to quite a few
>>out of focus shots (similar to front focusing, which it isn't) of small
>>birds against near glancing angle backgrounds such as paths etc.

> I take it you've seen this?
> Cotty

Hi Cotty,
Thanks for reminding me - I had seen that review earlier, and I've also
spent much time recently re-reading 5D and 1D MkII (&N) reviews. I've also
dusted off my EOS 3 and shot similar scenes with that camera. and checked
the critically sharp hit rate. Like an idiot I used negative film which I
thought I could assess under a microscope - not as well as I need, so I'll
probably repeat using slide film.

In the mean time, I am surprised by the high price of used 1D MkII* and N
variant bodies - in the case of an N rather too close to the latest prices
for a totally new camera, with a full year's warranty.
*Although I did chase after one at £900 for a few days. Backed out as I
became very suspicious of the seller's real intentions.

Thanks! I will also
browse through the Adobe forums, mentioned on this page. For others:
apparently, the case is this: [executive summary :)]

If your camera's RAW format is fully supported by DNG Converter, you
don't loose a thing by converting to DNG. If it is not, you can loose
some of the metadata, and (probably?) some of the image data when the
image is not written in a form that ACR understands... The list of
supported cameras:

>Willem and Rick, you are both to the point. I just did a test: 8,5 MB
>CR2 file from 30D becomes 8MB DNG file,
>16,5MB DNG file with embedded original, a whopping 32 MB linear DNG, and
>~40MB linear DNG with embedded original RAW file. Yikes.
>

ahha, I missed from your post that you were meaning DNG when you said
'digital negative'

>And I still don't know whether I have the same "flexibility" with DNG as
>I do with RAW. Linear seems to have more info (at least the full bits

you do ... it keeps everything

I use dng, as I have a 20D and a CP 5000 that both make raw

I DO not embedd the original file
Hi

>
> I have some different RAW format files (D30, 10D, 300D and 30D). When I
> want the best quality or when the lighting is tricky, I tend to use RAW
> for capturing images.
>
> Lately, I started to wonder how will I open my old (say D30) raw files a
> couple of years from now. The format is not the same as the new RAW
> files, so I can not count that this will be supported forever. For
> instance, when the new OS comes out (like MS Vista), I have no guarantee
> that Canon will release a library that will read the "old" formats.

your could perhaps try to convert all now to the Adobe DNG format, as I
understand it, it will support the lossless storage of all the data
contained in the RAW formats.

I suspect that it'll transcend platforms, and while it may require
licencing, it'll be perhaps as persistant as Adobe is.

Tapani, that is a clever hint. Thank you. I remeber now that you wrote
about this some time ago. I will do the same, thank you. And this will
certainly help me, since I am a developer, so C is no problem. In that
case, I don't have to really worry. I will just create jpeg files to go
with the RAW files (for quick viewing, web publishing etc).

Miha

ps: [totally off-topic] I use IMatch for DAM (digital asset management)
and it is a very fine and capable program, which does the RAW conversion
as well (using the Canon SDK). For RAW processing I use RSE, and now
increasingly Lightroom.

> -----Original Message-----
>
> I save a copy of dcraw.c on every CD/DVD of raw photos.
> I'm pretty sure C compilers will be around long enough for my
> photo needs.
