Canal de la SommeSince recent reports of Arras say it's very weedy on the Scarpe (stories of
blocked strainers, so may visit by car instead) we're thinking of taking a look at the Somme for our next trip in October. I can see plenty of mooring guides, but mostly compiled from visits a few years ago. Has anyone been there recently? Must just say thanks to the contributors to the moorings guides which we have found very useful so far. We do intend to add our own updates (GPS positions, etc) but still waiting for a rainy day to stay in to type them up! Re: Canal de la SommeLorna
We just took friends down from Peronne to Amiens and return about a month ago. It is most beautiful, lots of places stop, and the Authority that run the bridges and locks is one of the best we've met. I plead guilty and promise to put a couple of comments in the mooring guide in the next 3 or 4 days. There is a portion that runs the last say 2 hours down into Amiens where you are in the flowing river as it narrows, twists and turns, and with rain this descent was quite exhilarating, and beautiful. The entry into Amiens from the south is incredibly gorgeous, (floating gardens) as of course is Amiens centre. If you moor bow downstream at Amiens in the Port D'Amont, and it rains, you have to reverse out upstream. Try to take the first vacant bit of wall, furtherest from the low bridge, or consider turning to moor (but that turn would be immediately upstream of that bridge!). It certainly is a contrast with the Canal du Nord. Re: Canal de la SommeHi Lorna,
Don't let reports of weed in the Scarpe put you off going up to Arras. It just means you might have to check your water inlet from time to time. Likelihood of a blockage depends on a variety of factors - whether the inlet is high or low, whether it has a large perforated area that reduces down inside the hull so the 'suck' is not as extreme, and the water volume your pump takes, among other things. Weed will have died down by October anyway. Regards Tam Murrell T & D. Re: Canal de la SommeHi Tam
We got caught by weed several times on the Lys, so were thinking that Arras would be better done by car but, as you say, it should be better later in the year and it's still on our list.
