Call for translations (debian-refcard)

Hi,

the Debian refcard is now apt-getable part of Debian.
The version that is now in unstable has unfortunately some
layout defects, which I will tackle soon, but - worse - the
translations are not up to date. Therefore, I like to ask all
Debian translators to help both with the existing languages:

bg, ca, cs, da, de, el, es, eu, fi, fr, gl, he, hu, it, ja, nb,
nl, pl, pt_BR, pt_PT, ro, ru, sk, sv, tr, uk, vi, zh_CN

Of course, feel free to add more. Uzbek comes in my mind.

You can find the PO files in the Debian documentation projects
SVN repository:
svn://svn.debian.org/svn/ddp/manuals/trunk/refcard/po4a

PLEASE, contact me before you start working on a translation. I
will coordinate to prevent duplicated work.

Having the package in the archive will help anyway as it is likely
that it's detected as a native package with i18n.....so the teams
which monitor such packages (we're doing it for French) will notice
the new translation to do.

Anywa, thanks for calling for translations. A TODO message has just
been sent to the French team and I guess that coordinators of other
teams will do the same for their language, whicle people who mostly
work alone will just try to get the file translated.

You however did not mention how we're supposed to send the
translations back?

Oops, too late :-)

I noticed that the PO files are currently not error free:

$ msgfmt -cv po4a/fr.po
po4a/fr.po:7: some header fields still have the initial default value
26 translated messages, 92 fuzzy translations, 1 untranslated message.

Also previous translators should be added to the header to give proper
credits. It seems that the old CVS history of refcard was not
correctly transferred. So it's necessary to obtain this information from
http://cvs.debian.org/ddp/refcard/Attic/?root=debian-doc#dirlist

Would it be OK to clean the header of other PO files as well?

since I noticed now (after checking CVS log) that Martin Borgert did the
last translation updates I hesitate to commit a large proofread of the
file. Beside your changes my attached patch contains some typo fixes, I
removed some useless dashs (Konfig-Datei, ...) and used "Startet" instead
of "Starten", ... for consistency.

Hi,

thanks for the encouring reactions! Let me answer the questions:

- how to submit: People with SVN write access submit in SVN,
  others can send me a patch or, if you don't know diff/patch,
  the complete po file via mail. Please inform me about the SVN
  revision number your work is based on, if you know it.

- deadline: As for now there is no deadline. If a significant
  number of translations is finished, I will set a deadline for
  the remaining ones.

- cleaning PO files: Yes, feel free to do so, I will also look
  at the issue.

Nobody asked this, but anyway:

- encoding: Please use UTF-8 encoding. Nothing else.

- missing translations in docbook-xsl: refcard and many other
  documentation packages suffer from missing translation strings
  in docbook-xsl. Please consider helping this project, because
  many other projects (incl. Debian, GNOME, KDE, Linux, ...)
  will benefit from your work. The current state is, AFAIK:

Well, even though I generally encourage this, I have to object
here. You should not enforce UTF-8 encoding on PO files. Tools that
deal with PO files must be able to cope with various encodings. The
gettext tools very well handle various encodings as long as they're
properly announced in the PO file header.

Some teams might still have their own policy and could prefer other
encodings. We should not enforce enything on them.

If a given tool is limiting this, that tool should really be fixed.

On the other hand, I think that nearly all l10n teams now use UTF-8 by
default.

It's not just the PO aware tools. One can view PO files via wsvn
(web), use a text editor or work with grep etc. at the command
line. Those tools have no knowledge of the encoding. As Debian
uses UTF-8 by default, this encoding makes fewer problems.

Speaking of tools: po4a-gettextize splits long paragraphs into a
multi-line msgids. poedit concatenates such entries. I don't
care about the line format - but that way unreadable, huge diffs
are created. How do other people solve this problem?

poedit is.....sometimes a fairly bad tool, IMHO.

As you mention, it unwraps strings (msgid and msgstr) while most
gettext tools use a 79-character wrapping scheme. Just try opening a
PO file that got properly wrapped by msgcat, then simply save it in
poedit --> the file will be unwrapped.

In the past, it was also breaking down the former translation stuff
(the "#|" lines in PO files), putting them before other lines, which
is invalid according to the specs of PO format. All files produced by
these versions of it were invalid.

By using msgcat before doing anything useful with the PO file(s). This
is for instance the policy in the French team: reformat files with
msgcat before and after editing them, precisely to make diff more
readable and useful.

And, sometimes we forget about this (I am personnally forgetting much
too often).

Yes, I just found #238497 of 2004-03-17. I'll stay with
gettext-el.

Or msgattrib, as suggested in the bug report. Many thanks, I
will add sth. like this to my Makefile(s):
