Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

hi

I'm trying to export an audio file as a mp3.

the format is supposed to be 24kbps 22K mono

but when I choose 22K at the bottom of the work window

and then 24 in the preferences window

and then export...

the file comes out 24kbps 16K mono

Why doesn't it respect my selection of Sample Rate Frequency.

As a result my files will not upload correctly to my audio host.

Please help me!

Thanks

Mike Cabarles

This occurs because when you use a low bitrate such as 24 kbps but a
relatively high sample rate such as 22 050 Hz, the LAME encoder will
automatically downsample the sample rate on the basis that using higher
sample rates with low bitrates can cause poor quality encoding.

If you want to force 24 kbps bitrate with 22 050 Hz sample rate (note, not
22 000 Hz which is not supported in the MP3 specification) you will have to
use the Beta 1.3.3 version of Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_windows

Set your sample rate to 22 050 Hz in the same place as before, in the
Project Rate dropdown bottom left of the Audacity screen. However in
1.3.3, MP3 encoding options are no longer set in Preferences. Use File >
Export then choose MP3 in the "Save as type" dropdown and click
"Options" to choose your 24 kbps bitrate in the "Quality" dropdown.
Then click "Save" and you will get a 24 kbps 22 050 Hz MP3.

Dear Gale,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Actually I was using a mac. I would have used the 1.3.3 version, but I
couldn't find one. Will it be coming out soon?

Cheers,

Mike Cabarles

Sorry I was intending to give you the Mac link as well (it's always best to
say what operating system you are on and what version of Audacity you
are using when you write in).  1.3.3 is out now:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_mac

However please note that you need to be on OS X 10.3 or later to use the
Beta 1.3.3 version. If you are on 10.2 or earlier you can export from
Audacity as AIFF and convert the AIFF to a 24 kbps 22 050 Hz MP3 in
iTunes. Please see:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Lame_Installation#Alternative_MP3_encoding_with_iTunes

If you do this, you will need to choose "Custom" in the Setting dropdown
and then "Auto" in the Channels dropdown.

Hi Gale,

Thanks for your reply!

Well I got the mac beta version loaded and it works OK until I get to saving
the MP3. I choose MP3 and set the advanced options as you suggest, but when
I click the button to actually save the file the application quits
unexpectedly.

I am running MacOS 10.3.9 with 1GB memory

Then I tried to access the prefences menu and found the same thing.
The application quits unexpectedly.

Is there a prefs file from the previous version that could be interfering
with the new version?

Regards,

Mike Cabarles

The preferences from the 1.2.x version of Audacity (the "audacity" file in your
Library) should not interfere with the 1.3.3 Preferences which are separate and
stored at ~/Library/Application Support/audacity.cfg. I should try deleting the
1.3.3 Preferences and see if that helps. Are you on an Intel Mac or Power PC?

Dear Gale,

Thanks again for the fast reply.

I have deleted the prefs file as you suggested but still getting the same
behavior.

I'm using an old Mac PPC Tower 400Mhz machine - the acrylic case - charcoal
coloured model.

After I delete the prefs file, I open audacity and access the preference
option of the menu, it quits unexpectedly. (without creating a new
preferences file - that's probably correct)

Only if I open the app and then immediately quit, it creates the .cfg file

But after that if I open the app again and try to access preferences, it
still unexpectedly quits.

Hope that gives you some clues.

Thanks,

Mike.

Thanks for the information.

Have you changed your chosen recording and playback devices since you
were using the previous (presumably 1.2.6) version of Audacity?

I would click on the Mac hard disk and then on Applications >  Utilities >
Audio-MIDI Setup. Click on the Audio Devices tab and make sure on the
left-hand side that your built-in audio is selected in the "Default Input" and
"Properties for" dropdowns, and that on the right-hand side, your built-in
audio is Default Output and System Output. Under Audio Input and Audio
Output, there are two "Format" boxes. Set these to 44100.0 Hz 1ch-16 bit
for both input and output, then delete audacity.cfg and try again.

If Preferences still cause a crash you may be better to use 1.2.6, export as
AIFF and convert to MP3 in iTunes using the instructions already given.

It could be that updating the drivers of your built-in audio device:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Updating_Sound_Device_Drivers

might help the issue in 1.3.3.
