Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.7-4etch4
Severity: normal

hello,

dunno who's really to blame here, I have a strange problem with an
HP DeskJet 560C and cupsys: selected driver is Gutenprint's, printing via
OpenOffice.org works fine, yet printing via cupsys' client lp a plain .ps
(ie any app not CUPS-aware) yields a mirrored printout! (ie left-right
inverted, reads correctly into a mirror).
It's not a printer problem, printing directly via gs(hpdj560c) works fine.

thanks

This isn't Gutenprint.  It would either work in all cases, or be broken
in all cases.

Please could you attach .ps files of both OOo output and an example of
what is printed mirrored (with details of how it was produced).

Also your .lpoptions and cups configuration details would be useful
(cupsd.conf, printers.conf, /etc/cups/ppd/<queue>).

Thanks,
Roger

yep, except that OOo makes use of PPD for composing the PS whereas most
ps-utils don't.
Anyway, PS from OOo printed like 'lp -d dj560c psfile.ps' results in a
mirrored printout, like a SP from eg a2ps(1). Printing from OOo the normal
way works.

here you go, pls see attachment - one is OOo's (copied text into new doc,
then printed), and the other is 'echo "text"|a2ps -B -1 -o a2ps.ps'.

no .lpoptions, other files ps see attachment.

Thanks for attaching the files.  Looking at then, I can't see any
obvious problems.

To see if it's an issue with PPD-aware job submission, could you please
try to print with kprinter (package kdeprint).  Try "kprinter <file.ps>"
and then choose the printer and job options.  Is the printout still
mirrored?

The lp command is also capable of setting job options in the PPD.  It's
possible a specific option is causing mirrored output.  There's an
"-o mirror" option which might be getting set.  Does this have an
effect?  This option might also be visible in kprinter and OOo.

Regards,
Roger

or gpr? iirc it does make use of PPDs as well.
Will try.

quick check: lp -o mirror ... -> no change

- gpr, gtklp: PPD-aware but no change, still mirrored
- kprint: prints correctly.

in all cases I used PPD in /etc/cupsd/ppd/.

Alas, in no case I got an acceptable printout from an (RGB) JPEG: darkned,
almost all grayed out, either from cmd line or GIMP or OOo - definitely
this printer/driver is unusable for images (let alone true photo) - but
that's another story.

I wonder what makes kprint (and OOo) apart from other (PPD-aware) print
utils - note that even Mozilla, which prints via CUPS directly, doesn't
get it right.
