Bomb? Morfik Price CutI saw this morning that Morfik announced a big price cut to $995.00
(http://blog.morfik.com/price-reduction), with a no-hassle deployment license. It's amazing to me how fast everything moves in internet-time. -- On the first day, God created the heavens and the Earth On the second day, God created the oceans. On the third day, God put the animals on hold for a few hours, and did a little diving. And God said, "This is good." ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutMy first question would be.. has anyone actually used this? I am
looking for a raving testimonial from someone, better in the 4D community, who has used this, integrated it, or switched from some one 4D-related technology. The price is less relevant, if the learning curve is high. I have an oppurtunity to get this for a non-profit client, but my learning curve is what they are going to be paying for.. can they afford it :) ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutWell, you would probably have to ask them for references. I believe
it's being used by the Navy and Greenpeace. As far as learning curve, the people I know who use it say it's very similar to Delphi (I haven't used Delphi in...forever, so I cant verify). However, the bit that I HAVE done with it allows me to say 1) RAD/IDE tool like any of the other RAD/IDE tools you're used to 2) Write the code portions in BASIC, Pascal, C# or Java The guy I know over there is Fuad Ta'eed. His email is fuad@.... I'll refrain from sending him your contact info. I didn't bring this up to give them some props, which is also the reason why I don't discuss the merits of 4D's competitors on 4D lists, either. I brought it up because I believe it affects us as 4D folks, and I'm always anxious to have discussions with other folks in this community about where we're at, especially relative to everyone else. I've been able to use Morfik's product since before you could even try it (as is also true for some other development tools I have), but I haven't done anything serious with it yet. I have instead been continuing to build and extend with 4D. When Morfik was a lot more money, it was more of an interesting topic of discussion. Now it isn't a lot more money. ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutInstead of replacing 4D, I'm looking to integrate 4D in open-source
environments. 4D+Active4D has done a lot for me, now I'd like to move even further, but keep 4D in the mix. 4D's v11 and SQL capabilities is a promising start, but there are a lot of missing pieces yet to be delivered. ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutM'alam,
One easy way to do this is to integrate jQuery or other open source frameworks with the 4D Ajax Framework. The next rev of 4D Web 2.0 Pack will include a module 4D jQuery which makes integrating jQuery very simple with 4D based applications and databases. Lee Hinde did a session on it at the summit which was very well received. Basically you use the data structures, session management, record locking, query handling etc that the 4D Ajax Framework provides and you can use the jQuery libraries to build the client interface. Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutHi Brendan,
Thanks for the jQuery info. That's definitely a closer then for me to buy in. I'd like to see a Webinar with more recent information, and I had mentioned that to Joe Rusello. I think the 1.2 update may be better received if you got the word out. Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutM -
Here's what I guess I don't understand. Why not just use 4D's database server on the back end and ODBC into it from...whatever you're thinking about? ********************************************************************** Become a 4D SQL Wizard For As Little as $200! Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutM'alam,
You're right :-) We've been busy with the 4D v11 SQL launch, the summit etc. However we are getting ready to launch the next rev in the next few weeks and plan to have some extra webinars going when we do this. Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutM'alam,
Have a look at the extJS libraries for Active 4D. They allow easy implementation of JSON. This maps very well to 4D structures. Cheers, -- Larry White, P.Eng. Re: Bomb? Morfik Price CutI'm not familiar with Active 4D (beyond 'brochure' depth), but the
nice thing about jQuery is: 1) It handles XML feeds, which is what 4DAF is using to communicate back and forth. XML also has some traction in the larger community. (as does json). I'm sure Active 4D could/can spit out xml. 2) and since json is 'just' javascript, jQuery supports it as well. Ext is very cool, and very well done. And it's not an either/or, as Ext will sit on top of jQuery. My objection to Ext is the amount of time it would take to replace their look and feel. The advantage of a more generic framework is that you can develop the look and feel of the front end without having to buy into a default look and feel. If you're starting from scratch, that may be less important, but one is almost always plugging into an existing system.
