Board does not transmit serial data

Over the weekend I got bitbate to complete without errors and I set up kermit.  Today I tried to communicate to the verdex processor (starter pack) using kermit.  However, when I power cycled the processor, it does not transmit any characters over the serial port.  I verified this problem by viewing the port using a Windows RS232 port monitor.  I only received a null character from the gumstix processor when I applied power to the board.

I assume that the board is bad.  Does anyone know of another test that I could perform to verify the board’s condition?
