Backup softwareI'm looking for recommendations for backup software that's out there.
Our current needs are to backup Linux servers as well as some Windows file servers and Exchange (Exchange can be dumped and picked up that way if necessary). I originally setup Bacula 3 years ago and have loved it for the following reasons: 1. we have numerous datacenters (and keep adding them) and want to backup to a local backup device, not across the net 2. we want one management system that controls all the backup systems 3. we want a system that supports both disk and tape media. disk for short term fast retrieval, tape for long term offsite storage I personally think this is the best solution out there and it's working, but we're in the process of rebuilding the backup systems and I've been told that we need to re-evaluate if it's the solution for us. So is there anything better out there? And from what I understand Amanda doesn't have the distributed architecture that Bacula has. -- -matt -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

I pay a pot-smoking Indian swami to divine my thoughts via a hybrid ESP/deja vu method where he can figure out what I'm about to create before I create it. Going with the Google theory of at least three copies, widely dispersed, he then shares these thoughts with a semi-sentient colony of Jupiterian gasbags, and one of the plasma-based beings on Nebulon-Wilkes-Barre-IV whose name and visage causes instant paralysis among humans. I figure my data is prety safe. Restores are a bitch though. Oh, wait, you mean "out there" like "publicly available".... nevermind. -ben -- it is easier to suppress the first desire than to satisfy all that follow it. <benjamin franklin> -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

I'm not a sys admin and was able to set it up for automatic backups of my server, laptop and family MS desktop using rsync rsyncd, and smbtar. It has good documentation and a user list that is very active.
