Audiere, Vista / VBR

Hello again

Thanks for the responses on my Vista problem. Upgrading to the lastest version did wonders...

... however, the new version is all funky with mp3s. I did some testing and discovered that it wouldn't play songs with variable bitrate (VBR). Since the latest version now supports seeking in mp3s, I figured that it may have collided with VBRs. My question is thus, is it possible to disable the seek functionality, or is there another way around the problem (except re-recording our songs without VBR)?

Sincerely,
Jens Bergensten

I don't know anything about that, but what I'd do is find a small VBR
example, a small WAV example, and write a failing automated test and
check it into SVN.  And then we can fix it.  And do the same with the
existing formats we support.

Thanks for the response. I am not sure how to add stuff to the SVN, so I have just uploaded two small MP3s that you can try with. Open them in the wxplayer that is included with the audiere release. The one named _cbr (constant bit rate) works perfectly, while the one named _vbr can't be opened (they sound the same in winamp, though).

We have decided to simply convert our songs to constant bit rate format for now, so no worries.

Sincerely,
Jens Bergensten

Have you considered using Ogg Vorbis instead?  It is a far superior
format to MP3.  Vorbis is by default a variable-bit-rate format, and a
Vorbis stream with an average bit rate of about 112 Kbps is roughly
equivalent in quality to a 160 Kbps MP3.  So I highly recommend Vorbis
for audio that you distribute with your game.

I second that. For The Longest Journey, it was almost an easy choice.
Given that we have a lot of speech, I would have preferred Ogg Speex,
but back then Audiere didn't support it, and now it's too late, the data
is all converted and shipped :-)

Also, with Vorbis you're not going to have to pay the license cost for
MP3 when you want to distribute your final product.

Yes, both of your comments are very true. Our problem at the moment is that our Mac OS X port doesn't support ogg. We would have to either use different music files for the different releases, or attempt to implement ogg in the Mac version somehow. I'm not responsible for the Mac port, so I don't know how difficult that is...
