| Subject: [Audacity-devel] How about trying DTMF Tones?
> Try generating DTMF tones using 15 hours...you might get the impression
> that Audacity is hung. Progress dialog isn't taking all processing into
> account.

We have a general note about all Tone Generators in "Release Checklist
not aiming for 1.4" :

"Long tone generations (e.g. 20 minutes) can crash Audacity from time to
time. i.e. the tone has not still not been generated after 30 minutes or more
and Audacity is no longer responding. Consider if the theoretical 99
hours, 59 minutes, 59.999 seconds generation allowed should be
restricted."

I observed the crashing on my older XP machine. On this more recent one
I've been generating a 15 hour tone for five minutes in which time the
"remaining time" has gone up from 20 to 45 minutes and CPU is
about 15 -20 %. This isn't really useful. Should we escalate to main
checklist with the intention of doing something about it e.g. generate
a short tone and essentially repeat it (job done instantly)?

Gale
>>>
>>> My names is zachary and I recently successfully recorded using audacity,
>>> four mono channels at 44.1/24 resolution for almost 13 hours . We used
>>> Audacity beacuse other DAW's automatically stop recording much earlier
>>> and our performance ended up lasting 14 hours! We were aware that
>>> Audacity would shut down around 13 hours. Okay, I use Digital
>>> Performer and am attempting to export these Audacity files as 44.1/24
>>> aiff mono files in order to import them into a DP session. First, I
>>> have found that Audacity does not allow exporting at 44.1/24 aiff.
>>> Either way, I have now tried numerous times to export my enourmous
>>> 13-hour files and each time I get a file that is exactly 3:22:53.94.
>>> How can I export the whole 13-hour track in one take? I am highliting
>>> the whole track?
>>>
>> Yep, I sse what you mean. The 15-hour tracks I made came out as
>> 12:25:33.78 according to ffmpeg. Import brings it in at 04:08:27.619.
>>
> The new FFmpeg support is able to import the entire file, so that leads
> me to believe it will be able to export it completely once a couple of
> minor issues are corrected. I can build you a new version once
> corrected if you want to give it a try.
>

Actually, I don't believe it's an Export problem. Just regenerated and
found that the track will not go over 12:25:33.781. This is before
exporting.
> Either way, I have now tried numerous times to export my enourmous
12:25:33.78 according to ffmpeg. Import brings it in at 04:08:27.619.

Hi Zachary,

When you exported, were you trying to mix the 4 tracks into one during
the export? Or were you trying to export to 4 individual files? If the
latter, did you use Export Multiple?

Also, you mentioned that you could not export to 24-bit AIFF. Did you
happen to notice the Options button on the export window? Even though
the file type dropdown says 16-bit, you can change what actually happens
via the Options button.

Greetings. I wanted to help with the audacity development process, and "On Vista, if no input device is connected <del class="diffchange"></del>such as a microphone, clicking Help > Audio Device Info causes a crash." caught my eye because it looked easy to fix, maybe a good place to start.

So I fixed it, patch attached. I wasn't sure if "as plain text attachment" meant I should append .txt, so I did just to be safe. I also the modified .cpp just in case I patched wrong.

Summary: Checks to make sure both a playback and a recording device were found before moving on to mixer tests.

I also updated the wiki with information about the bug that I found out while fixing, to help someone else if my patch is not accepted.
---

| Subject: [Audacity-devel] EXPERIMENTAL_SAVE_DEFAULT_VIEW
> When I saw the subject line, I thought this might be about a different
> feature: It would be great if you could load up some files for viewing,
> change the underlying file with another program, and select "refresh" or
> "reload" to see the changed version. A more elaborate form of this is to
> allow a program to specify input files, a region of time, and track view
> parameters via some sort of descriptor file. For debugging audio
> software or browsing experimental data, it's really great to have a
> visual display, but setting up the view over and over can be a pain.
> Does anything like this exist?

1) Would Mod_Script_Pipe help here?
2) Need to overcome operating system limitations on writing open
files? I've never been able to edit a WAV file Audacity is reading
    directly (aliased) with other programs.
> >>>>> * Fixed bug related to cuts/deletes from label tracks. Selecting
> >>>>> only a region in a label track and deleting it will delete that
> >>>>> region in linked wave tracks. Selecting a label track in addition
> >>>>> to a wave track is now the same as selecting only the wave track.
> >>>>> If linking is off, the previous behaviour is used.
> >>>> I don't remember the previous behaviour but... with linking off,
> >>>> selecting a region within label X and pressing delete is now causing
> >>>> other labels to the right to move left but the end of label X is
> >>>> staying in the same place - I think this needs fixing (should be easy).
> >>> Can you give the steps for this please Martyn, as I can't quite see what
> >>> you mean. I think label X denotes a selection region (?) but if I select
> >>> a region extending up to half way through such a label and delete,
> >>> label X moves back and the region it denotes seems to be correctly
> >>> reduced.
> >> Maybe you need to select the wave and the label tracks. Does this help?
> >>
> >> Before cut
> >> http://mjshaw.at-uclan.com/audacity/window000.png
> >>
> >> After cut
> >> http://mjshaw.at-uclan.com/audacity/window001.png
> >
> > Thanks, no the behaviour is there even if I select only the label track -
> > linkage must have been on somehow from other testing.
>
> Linking was not on (you can see the button on the images).

Slight cross-purposes :=) I meant linkage was on when I was testing my
end (so I could not see the failure to delete inside the label which you
were seeing).

> I think the old code could usefully be changed to the new in this
> (unlinked) case.

Agree, I've already noted it on the Checklist so we don't lose sight of
it - thanks for spotting it. Unfortunately the pre-GSoC label code had
quite a few issues (the pasting ones are on the Checklist as well).
> > Don't know the work involved, but I wonder if it might be better
> > to disable Metadata Editor from appearing when exporting at
> > the command line, as currently anything the Editor contains can't
> > be passed at the command line, whereas the fact of it appearing
> > suggests otherwise.
>
> Alternatively, we could provide some more escape sequences to provide
> the tags on the command line to the encoder, which would be useful.

That would be better still, again depending on the work needed. What
prompted me to write was that some users have been suggesting we
could have variables (like %f for filename) that pass the content of the
principal fields in the Editor.
> (and it is identified not to have visibility by configure).
>
> I read bits from various cygwins includes, and I guess (really, I guess)
> 1. __declspec(dllexport) / __declspec(dllimport) should compile.
> 2. "With the advent of auto-import in binutils, we no longer need to
> worry about __declspec(dllexport) / __declspec(dllimport) and friends."
> 3. Since I doubt ELF is used on cygwin (??), I am not shure if
> visibility stuff will work after gcc 4 will enter cygwin.
> 4. visibility should work starting from gcc 3.5 but *never* on
> cygwin / win32 (?)

Fair point, I'd forgotten that gcc-on-win32 supports
__declspec(dllimport). More pre-processor logic needed to pick up use of
GCC on win32 and make the relevant definitions of AUDACITY_DLL_API.

> Curently I made alpha 3 compile on native cygwin (see the hack 'patches'
> in my second post "build problems" from 3.7.2008).
> and it runs, opens and saves files, edits, plays and records, does
> effects ...
> It does _not_ have input selection box, does not use native volume.
> Without nyquist (nyquist did not compile on Linux for me, either), and
> with speaker icon almost black (reversed). Without icon.
> Ondemand did not go through linking. File>Open Metadata Editor crashes
> (trying to find out why).
> Generate>Pluck is missing (why?).

It's a Nyquist plug-in - so if you disable nyquist then it can't be run.
>>
>> plus a slew more after this, I think they're all related to this one.
>>
>> I'm using gcc 3.4.6
>>
>>
> I think that's the problem - all other platforms have moved on to GCC
> 4.x, so we are not regularly building using old GCC versions. Does
> cygwin not have a vaguely current GCC available?
>
> Richard
>
>

Cygwin's most recent gcc is (or was 10 days ago)
         $ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.4.4 (cygming special, gdc 0.12, using dmd 0.125)

I think it would be nice if audacity.h either defines AUDACITY_DLL_API
blank or
it gives an error/warning for easier localisation.
>
I do not know what is Chad's platform; obviously not cygwin since he has
gcc 3.4.6.

As regards, cygwin, I think the question is whether there is will to
support it.

And if yes, should "native cygwin" *or* Windows-mingw
compiled-on-cygwin be supported, *or* both *?*

I did not resolve a _FILE_OFFSET_BITS redefine issue yet.
>>> Can you give the steps for this please Martyn, as I can't quite see what
>>> you mean. I think label X denotes a selection region (?) but if I select
>>> a region extending up to half way through such a label and delete,
>>> label X moves back and the region it denotes seems to be correctly
>>> reduced.
>> Maybe you need to select the wave and the label tracks. Does this help?
>>
>> Before cut
>> http://mjshaw.at-uclan.com/audacity/window000.png
>>
>> After cut
>> http://mjshaw.at-uclan.com/audacity/window001.png
>
> Thanks, no the behaviour is there even if I select only the label track -
> linkage must have been on somehow from other testing.

Linking was not on (you can see the button on the images) and the
behaviour is the same as 1.3 Beta (as Mark says, when unlinked, it
uses the old code).

I think the old code could usefully be changed to the new in this
(unlinked) case.
> Audacity.h so everybody can build from HEAD?

I think the problem is the #typedef of functions which I've raised in
the past. The current AUDACITY_DLL_API logic is designed to be used in
function (method) prototypes. Where symbol visibility support isn't
available (as with GCC 3.4.x) then AUDACITY_DLL_API can be left blank
quite happily. The problems come when it gets used in a typedef instead,
because that then has to pass type naming rule checks which function
definitions don't. So the compiler is right - AUDACITY_DLL_API doesn't
name a type. The point is that is shouldn't name a type - it will either
be a compiler attribute specifier (__dllexport,
__visibility("default"), ..) or blank if there is no compiler support
for symbol visibility.
Question for you: where do you get slv2-0.6.0 from? It's "home page"
only has version 0.5.0 source tarballs on it.

I've found the SVN for it, which will yield a "0.6.0" tarball via make
dist once you've got all the dependencies installed, but it's not clear
whether this is in any sense authoritative.

> There are 4 new files:
> some duplicate code that probably should be moved to separate files.
>
> None of the LV2 code will build if USE_LIBSLV2 isn't defined, so it
> should not affect Windows or Mac, or Linux systems without SLV2.

Seems to be compiling OK here, after some more library version bumps.

Michael,

I've made a tiny fix, a nit rather than a real problem, in sequence.cpp,
changing '-b-1' to '-1-b'. Why? Because b is unsigned, so '-b' is also
unsigned, so -b-1 is actually a very large number. It all worked before
because when that's converted to an int the large number is treated as
negative, but swapping the order is better practice and fixes a warning.

In latest CVS the green blobs still only progress if we are doing
something to cause repaints, e.g. dragging the size/height of the wave.
In your block-update-code you should check the time after reading each
block, and force some painting if it's been a while (0.2s?) and is
needed. This would make it a lot clearer what's going on. For me this
is more urgent than the other extensions.

Could you also look at these warnings (below) and fix the ones which

OK, so although in the last two images addng silence in front of the
selection rather than behind would seem to keep the wave tracks in sync
wih labels, it will break down if there were two labels in the selection
region?

Adding silence in front won't fix this problem consistenly, even for one label. Adding silence only keeps the tracks in sync with other wave tracks. The only way to keep all the tracks perfectly in sync with the labels is by speeding them up/down also. That's not really a solution though...

> > Note in the second track that the "ere" label no longer aligns with the
> > start of the de-amplified section. So, should the silence be added in
> > front of the starting point of the selection, rather than after it? Does
> > adding silence make "audio" sense when you listen to it, which will
> > give a pretty significant "dropout" effect? Is it better to simply
> > apply the speed change to each track?
>
> OK, I know what you're talking about.
>
> This is an interesting thing that I thought about, but I really don't know what
> the "right" solution is. Adding silence keeps wave tracks in sync with each
> other, but it can't keep those wave tracks in sync with labels. The label
> shifting keeps the labels in sync with the track that's getting slowed down/sped up,
> not the other tracks.

OK, so although in the last two images addng silence in front of the
selection rather than behind would seem
