Asynchronous operations?

Hello!

I'm currently using libsmbclient library for read / write to a remote file.
I noticed that it does not support asynchronous operations.
Does Samba VFS support these?
What approach can give better performance:
    1. Read / write through libsmbclient library;
    2. Mount shared smb folder, open remote file as local one and read
/ write to it?

Configuration: Mac OS X 10.5.2.
