Asking for bot status

I am sometimes asked to request for bot status for my bot. I find this
strange. Bot status is there for the normal users of the wiki, not for
the bot operator. If you want my bot to have bot status, then you
request it. I'd be happy to help you in that, but why should I request
something just because someone else wants it?

Because...that's policy...and policy is good?

Because it's respectful when you're playing on someone else's turf, to
play by their rules?

Which rule are we talking about? It's people from wikipedia X asking
me to ask wikipedia X to have my bot get bot status. If they want my
bot to have bot status, I'm not stopping them. I just find it strange
for someone to say "please ask me for Y" when the one profiting from Y
is that person...

Because wikipedia X probably has some rule of "accounts who edit by
automated programs must/should have bot status" ?

I think by running a bot, you are kinda invading Wikipedia X, if you ask for
a bot status, than that makes you welcome, as opposed to someone, who floods
the recent changes, and thinks he's doing good...

I think there is a communication problem here. Correct me if I am wrong, but
here's what I understand:

1. Andre is the author of a bot framework.
2. Other people use this framework to create bots of their own to use on
various wikis.
3. Andre is being asked to get bot status for these bots, which he is not
running himself.

Yes, the wikipedia X sites have policies which require bots to be
registered, but Andre is not operating these bots - he simply is working on
the underlying framework which other people then use to create a bot for a
specific purpose.

Andre: It appears that you are being contacted to discuss bot status because
you're the only contact that the site operators can find. As long as your
name is so closely tied to the pywikipedia bot framework, you will probably
receive such requests. I would simply craft a standard reply that you can
send out indicating that you are not the author of the bot in question, but
simply work on the underlying framework used, that you do not know who
authored the said bot, and that you wish them well in tracking them down.

That's my current understanding, but I am open to hearing different ideas in
case my understanding of the issues here are flawed.

Tim

No, that's not the issue. It is about my own bot. And it's not about
getting bot status, but about asking to get bot status. If I had been
in some position to make it happen (like being a Steward), I would not
mind having to use that. If someone else requests a bot flag for my
bot, I happily give whatever information information is needed. But
what's happening is that people come to me saying they think my bot
should have a bot flag, so I should ask for it. If YOU think that my
bot needs a bot flag, why don't YOU request it?
