Area Calculations Suddenly Stopped Working

Hi there

I am running ArcView 9.3 and have a series of shapefiles set to WGS_1984_UTM_Zone_38N.

Now today when I was working on one or two map documents, suddenly something went wrong with one of the shapefiles and/or map documents. I have no idea what I did wrong as I was not doing anything complicated at all (merely cutting and pasting a selection of regions from one shapefile into another region shapefile of the same projection/coordinate system).

Now for some reason, I cannot calculate the geometry at all in any of the shapefile associated with these map documents. All I get is a zero in all the columns. Occasionally if I click on the option under Calculate Geometry to use the Data Frame's coordinate system, I obtain wildy incorrect areas.

This is incredibly urgent as I have lots of work to do on this proect and a deadline of 5pm GMT on Wednesday 8th Oct. Any ideas on what I could do to rectify this or what is wrong with the files?

The only other thing I did which may have affected it is in the data frame properties of the layout view, i changed the Extent from "Automatic" to fixed extent and then to fixed scale in order to try to make all of my map documents appear at the exact same extents/scales. Come to think of it , after doing so the problems may have begun but since changing it back to automatic, the problems still persist.

Would really appreciate any advice that anyone may have on this.

Thanks for your help
