Exactly.

Not only did he do nothing wrong but in fact you violated the auction
rules by not paying right away.

I can understand you're upset you didn't get what you wanted but if you
had followed the auction requirements (which you agreed to when you bid)
you would have the manual now.

I can't tell you how many times I have been told "I'll pay" and never
heard from someone again. You can't blame the guy for doing exactly what
he said he would and that certainly does not make him a bad seller or
trader.

Just my $80.02

Now that said the illustrations on this thing look great. Is there a
scanned version of this online somewhere? Easel Weasel indeed lol.

> Maybe he resold it because the term of sale in his auction stated.......
> full payment must be made upon auction close.
> Personally I think that's something that should be a buy it now condition
> but that's me, he did state it though in his auction.

I have kept back an old posting, but don't know who was the original poster:

While flipping through the old speech synthesis book I mentioned in my
previous post, I noticed a little table that might be useful and fun.
Here it is (view with monospaced font for best readability):

Typical Formant Frequencies of Some Vowel Frequencies (for a typical
male voice)

Phoneme "as in" F1 F2 F3
ee feet 250 2300 3000
i hid 375 2150 2800
eh head 550 1950 2600
ae had 700 1800 2550
ah tot 775 1100 2500
aw talk 575 900 2450
u took 425 1000 2400
oo tool 275 850 2400

F1, F2, and F3 represent the center frequencies of each formant. So, if
you've got 3 resonant bandpass filters, have fun!
> modular with a few MOTM filters, including the MOTM 410. An hour or so
> of knob tweaking has gotten me something almost sounding like an "A"
> vowel, but it isn't close enough. I am running the 3 bandpass outputs
> of the 410 into a mixer, and tweaking the relative volumes and
> Other weapons in my arsenal include a Voyager + Moogerfoogers, which
but extremely good silkscreen and thick 3mm aluminium.

For a total of 4 frontpanels i paid a total of 692 EUR (most of it for
silkscreening making), so per panel the price is roughly
> Korg 700s/K2s which will require me to drill some holes for ¼'
> outputs/inputs on the back. I'm worried about drilling these
> holes for 2 reasons:
>
> 1. The case is metal and I'm concerned with small metal
> shavings getting on the circuit board and shorting something.
> I could remove the circuit boards inside but I don't really
> want to. I was considering using a magnet and compressed air
> for the cleanup but I'm not sure if this is the best method.

When I have to do that, I use generous amounts of masking tape
around the hole and in the vicinity. Catches most of filings and
swarf.

> 2. I'm also concerned that the vibrations of the drill will
> do harm to the solder connections and other various
> components inside. I was thinking of bracing the synth
> against something sturdy so it doesn't vibrate too much but I
> don't have a clamp that strong or big.

You might want to invest in a stepped bit. Compared to ordinary
(cylindrical) bits, the drilling is smoother and the end result is
cleaner (i.e. no deformations or pentagonal holes).
> Subject: [AH] bringing an ARP 2600 up to spec, 2 questions...
>
> >1-infinite release level at VCA. the ADSR seems to be functioning, and I
> >am getting gate voltage from the keyboard, as the ADSR will open and close
> >according to keyboard, but it doesn't seem to affect the infinite release
> >(i.e. constant ringing of note).
>
> Ah, the classic "I love my ARP 2600, but how do I make it stop?" question.
> Above the Voltage Controlled Amplifier is a slider called "Initial Gain".
> Slide this to
> the left, and keep it there.
>
> >2-VCO 3 has no pulse width control-I had just reassembled the synth for my =
> >last round of testing, so I haven't checked the actual pot(my first
> instinct),
> >but figured I'd throw this out now there as well, just in the off-chance
> that
> >these are common issues among 2600's.
>
> There is one opamp (LM 301) that does the pulse wave for VCO 3. If you are
> getting a pulse wave
> at all, it is probably working, and the pot may be screwed. If the waveform
> you are getting is not
> a pulse or square wave, replace the LM 301. (You can of course check the pot
> by measuring the
> voltage from the wiper to ground while sliding the pot to different
> positions. The voltage should change).

That was my second guess, and it obviously should have been my first,
because it's a simpler method. (3 voltage-controlled lags? Am I crazy?)

The main reason I though it might not be the answer is that any
"misalignment" will result in discontinuities that generate unwanted
high frequency artifacts -- in the same way that precise alignment is
required to shape sawtooth waves into nice, pure triangles. I guess a
bit of high frequency hash isn't a big problem with buzzy saw waves.

If you feel like answering more questions, here are mine:
How clean are the Brass waves? (Have you ever 'scoped them?) Do the
wave shapes get disjointed as the synths age and drift out of calibration?

Could be a popular DIY project!

Cheers,
John

>The Little Brother/Explorer I produce sawtooth octaves in this way:
> After producing a one-octave lower square wave by the traditional
> CD 4024 binary divider, the original sawtooth wave is added to
> this square wave at just the right amplitude. This causes the
> second cycle of the original sawtooth to be raised up so
> it "continues" the first cycle, giving a 1 octave lower sawtooth.
> The process is then repeated for two more octaves. Fuzz is PWM by
> an Attack/Decay only (ADSR w/sustain = 0) envelope generator, while
> reed is a fixed width pulse wave resembling an oboe.
>
>I had actually designed a circuit that not only makes squares,
>pulses, and saws, but also triangles, and makes each octave
>available through a color (waveform) control copied from the
>ElectroComp 101 continuously variable waveform circuit. I called it
>the "PowerGirl Technologies Versatile Divider".
>
>Unfortunately, my friend who said he wants to build it and put it on the
>market is taking forever, so you might as well keep going and build
>am getting gate voltage from the keyboard, as the ADSR will open and close
>according to keyboard, but it doesn't seem to affect the infinite release
>(i.e. constant ringing of note).

> Heheh well I don't know if you have a photographic memory for the
> gear people own... or it's just concidence Scott..
> But one thing I can say for sure is I'm able to get a lot more music
> finished with a Voyager and P08 in my studio than if I had an
> original Minimoog and Prophet 5 :)
>
> For me getting music finished is a lot more important than subtle
> differences in tone which frankly often get lost in the mix anyway.
>
> The sound *is* very important to me, which is why I'm not using
> plugins... but it's not the number one most important thing.
> The saving in time that modern synths offer and therefore the quicker
> I can get ideas down before I:
>
doesn't even need to be said anymore.

* I had planned for years to extricate the 3 band resonantor section, both
those parts of the Polymoog aren't for sale, nor is the power supply, which
really useful for anything.

* The Moog Stickers have free mailing just as before. And I'm out of
Multimoog/Micromoog front and back side stickers. Everybody who ordered
some, they all were mailed out today. Thanks.

And to James Walker, there seems to be something wrong with your email as my

>That would be fantastic! Still quite probably the best analogue module
>design ever. Maybe it could be sold in a form that was even easier than the
>original to patch out, very easily convertable into a (4 or 5U?) 19-inch
>format with space on left or right (or either side) for panels with the
>end-user's (or third-party designer's) patching choice.

Tom said it's a clone of the original save for two things - a few parts have
changed due to sourcing issues and that there will be rudimentary CV/gate
control over MIDI. He did not say whether or not there would be pitchbend
or any control over filter via MIDI.

Based on his statements I would not expect a 5U patched out SEM. I would
not expect fancy MIDI control of resonance, filter, or VCA. The unit will
not have presets nor be adaptable to such. (The programmer on the 4/8 voice
Oberheims contained their own envelope generators)

So I'm dissappointed. Why?

- It's the same thing as the old SEM. You can by loose SEMs on ebay for
$500-750. He's unlikely to be able to meet that price point. Especially
not if he keeps the oscillator tuning pots and has to put it in a full
enclosure with power supply and MIDI.

- He's not addressing any of the shortcomings of the original: Only one
modulation source routable to the VCF and single LFO waveshape. No noise.
No sample and hold. No VC control (even when patched out) of envelope
generator parameters.

- He should have had Dave Smith lend a hand and use the same PIC code from
the Mopho to do computer generated envelopes and LFO. This would allow beat
synced LFO, sample and hold, velocity modulation of envelope parameters, and
good MIDI implementation.

The good news? If the oscillator and filter stay the same it'll kick the
ass of any recent Dave Smith design. Sorry but that complete voice in a
single Curtis IC doesn't do it for me.

These are just my thoughts. Take them with the same grain of salt as any
other synth geek who owns over a dozen SEMs.

Greetings,

I really hope you don't mind me asking such a beginner questions.
Sometimes I feel quite dense among the many technicians and skilled DIYers
on this list. I have a question though which I'm sure somebody has
experience with. You can either answer this post (for future generations)
or, if there's a tutorial about such things online, a link will be fine as
well. Of course, there's always the option of ignoring this post
altogether..

Anyway, I'm planning on doing a few more mods to (one of my) Korg 700s/K2s
which will require me to drill some holes for ¼' outputs/inputs on the
back.
I'm worried about drilling these holes for 2 reasons:

   1. The case is metal and I'm concerned with small metal shavings getting
on the circuit board and shorting something. I could remove the circuit
boards inside but I don't really want to. I was considering using a
magnet
and compressed air for the cleanup but I'm not sure if this is the best
   method.
   2. I'm also concerned that the vibrations of the drill will do harm to
the solder connections and other various components inside. I was thinking
of bracing the synth against something sturdy so it doesn't vibrate too
much
but I don't have a clamp that strong or big.

Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for everyone's time..
and compressed air for the cleanup but I'm not sure if this is the best
   method.
   2. I'm also concerned that the vibrations of the drill will do harm to
the solder connections and other various components inside. I was thinking
of bracing the synth against something sturdy so it doesn't vibrate too much
but I don't have a clamp that strong or big.

Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for everyone's time..
There is a huge difference. Have you even ever compared an early OSC board Minimoog to a Voyager? I have and the original sounds way better in terms of tone and warmth.

Sure that might be my opinion, but I trust my ears and stand by it.
>
> I think that is totally a matter of opinion.
>
> Why do you think the originals sound better? Maybe they sound better
> to you, but I don't understand why this would be the case for everyone.
>
> I personally don't gush over the sound of either original Minimoog or
> Voyager. Ok - they are way bassy, but when I have used minis in the
> past I had to EQ them to death as they sucked up every inch of space
> in the mix.
>
> As for the Prophet 5 vs 8, I don't prefer one or the other - they are
> different, but honestly for the type of sounds I am going for, the 08
> is actually better for me. I found the original P5's dull and lacking
> presence (I assume you call this warmth).
>
> Just my opinion.
>> Well I don't think there has been one reissued synth that sounds
>> better than the original.
>>
>> Prophet 08 sounds better than a Prophet 5? Nope.
>>
>> Voyager sounds better than an original Minimoog original osc
>> board? Nope.
