Crime surveys user meeting

Tuesday 9 December 2008
Royal Statistical Society, Errol Street, London, EC1Y 8LX

This meeting was previously referred to as the British Crime Survey user
meeting but we have now extended it to other crime surveys.

The meeting will provide a forum for the exchange of information and views
between users and producers of the Government Crime and Victimisation Survey
datasets. It is aimed primarily at users and potential users of survey
microdata.

The morning will include presentations giving updates on the British Crime
Survey, Scottish Crime and Justice Survey and the Offending Crime and
Justice Survey. The afternoon will consist of research papers based on the
crime surveys.

The meeting is free to attend and lunch is provided. To view the programme
and book a place please go to http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/esds/events/2008-12-09/

--------------------------------------------
Royal Statistical Society, London

This meeting will provide a forum for data users and producers to meet and
discuss new developments and exchange information about the Labour Force
Survey and Annual Population Survey. The morning will consist of
presentations from the Office for National Statistics including an update on
the LFS/APS. The afternoon will consist of research papers based on the LFS/APS.

The meeting is free to attend and lunch is provided. For more details and to
book a place please go to http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/esds/events/2008-12-02/

Attendees at the LFS/APS meeting may also be interested in the following
meeting of the Royal Statistical Society which takes place at the RSS on the
same day from 4.30pm.

Ethnic populations: the components for projection
Paul Norman, John Stillwell and Peter Boden (School of Geography, University
of Leeds)

The Social Statistics Section is organising this meeting to discuss work
associated with two projects undertaken as part of the ESRC-funded
Understanding Population Trends and Processes (UPTAP) programme. One project
aims to produce sub-national population projections by ethnic group and by
age whilst the other project involves analysis of internal migration by
ethnic group using census data for 2000-01. The presentations will consider
trends and patterns in each of the components of ethnic population change
together, and will report on progress towards the construction of a
projection model and the difficulties confronted along the way.

The meeting is open to all and is free of charge, but pre-registration is
recommended. Please email meetings@... or telephone 020 7638 8998.

Britain in a European Context - Research Data Resources

Humanities Bridgeford Street, University of Manchester
Friday 7 November 2008

Understanding the UK increasingly requires an understanding of our place in
Europe. This workshop will introduce participants to the major data
resources that enable researchers to explore these relationships and influences.

The one day workshop, aimed at social science research staff and students,
will discuss the data resources available for the analysis of the UK at a
national level and within a European context. It will include presentations
on accessing British survey data and international comparative data from
surveys, including issues relating to accessing data from Eurostat, and will
explore the range of international time series data available from
intergovernmental organisations such as the World Bank and International
Monetary Fund. We will also be looking at the methodological, statistical
and technical issues associated with combining data from these different
sources. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to gain
practical experience in accessing and exploring the data and related
resources in hands-on sessions.

The workshop is free to attend and is open to all. To view the programme and
book a place please go to http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/esds/events/2008-11-07/
______________________________________________________

Health and Social Care Survey Programme Review

Earlier this year (2008) the NHS Information Centre (IC) reviewed its health
and social care survey programme. The review process was overseen by a
dedicated Survey Review Board with membership drawn from the Department of
Health, Government Regional Offices, The Office of National Statistics,
Public Health Observatories, and Universities. As part of the review the IC
invited responses to a consultation on the future of its survey programme.
The report on the outcome of the Survey Programme Consultation is available
online to view or download from the IC at
http://www.ic.nhs.uk/work-with-us/consultations/review-of-population-based-health--related-surveys.

The Survey Programme Review Board has now evolved into the Survey Programme
Advisory Group (SPAG) and is continuing the work to develop the NHS IC's
Survey Programme. The group has two roles: to explore issues relating to the
survey programme as a whole, and to address issues around the design,
specification and procurement of future surveys.

If you would like to receive regular updates on the NHS IC Survey Programme
you can join the Virtual User Forum by sending an e-mail to

ANNOUNCEMENT: 2009 Gordon Conference on Quantitative Genetics and Genomics - UPDATE

1) The Gordon Conference on Quantitative Genetics and Genomics will be held
as planned at the Hotel Galvez on Galveston Island from February 22-26.
2009. Although Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc on the Texas gulf coast, the
Hotel sustained minimal damage and massive repair and restoration efforts
are underway across the region. Many large events are taking place as
planned (e.g. the Lone Star Rally is being held October 30-November 2), and
several other GRCs will be held prior to ours. We have also received a
letter from the mayor of Galveston urging us to keep the conferences on the
island. They are trying to quickly rebuild the tourism industry and are
welcoming visitors. I am confident that by the time we all get together ~5
months from now, we will have a great conference, be able to experience
nearly all of the recreational activities the area has to offer, and in so
doing, help contribute to the long-term recovery efforts of the region.

2) We already have 70 registrants for the conference. I urge those of you
who are considering attending to register as early as possible to reserve
your space!
https://www.grc.org/application.aspx?id=8785<https://owa.qimr.edu.au/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://www.grc.org/application.aspx?id=8785>

3) Due to the generous support from many sponsors (MONSANTO, PIONEER
HI-BRED, SAS/JMP, PIC NORTH AMERICA, MARS SYMBIOSCIENCE, AVIAGEN, GENESEEK,
NEWSHAM CHOICE GENETICS, COBB-VANTRESS, and the USDA SWINE GENOME
COORDINATOR), and the fact that several invited speakers have generously
waived their GRC travel support, we are able to fund several scholarships
for graduate students and postdocs to partially defray registration costs
for attending the conference. To apply, please email the following by
October 27 to grc2009@...:

a) A one page letter stating the reasons why you would like to attend the

Hi everyone,

I'm writing with a question from Vapnik's book (2nd edn). To answer this,
you'll probably need to have the book handy.

On pg 42, he has

Consider the set of l-dimensional binary vectors

$ q(\alpha) = (Q(z_1, \alpha), \dots, , Q(z_l, \alpha)),   \alpha \in \Lambda$

that one obtains when $\alpha$ takes various values from $\Lambda$. Then
geometrically speaking, $N^{\Lambda}(z_1, \dots, z_l)$ is the number of
different vertices of the $l$-dimensional cube that can be obtained on the
basis of the sample $z_1, \dots, z_l$. and the set of functions $Q(z,
\alpha) \in \Lambda$.

I'm having difficulty parsing the definition of $N^{\Lambda}$. Can anyone
elaborate on what he meant here?

                                                            Thanks, Faheem.
Imperial College London

Junior Research Fellowships

Imperial College London has created a significant number of new Junior Research Fellowships,
to enable outstanding young researchers to establish academic careers. The Fellowships are
for 3 years and are intended to to enable the successful applicant to focus full time on
developing an independent research identity but with encouragement and support from a
senior academic mentor. Applicants will be expected normally to have between two and four
years post-doctoral experience at the time of application.

Proposals will be judged primarily on the basis of their scientific merit, track record and
potential for development of an independent research programme. Applicants will need to
identify an Imperial College academic staff member to act as their sponsor and to provide
relevant facilities and mentorship for the tenure of the Fellowship.

This is a tremendous opportunity for a talented young researcher to establish an academic
career at Imperial.

PhD Studentship: Particle Methods for Estimation and Control

Funded by EPSRC and British Aerospace Systems
Stipend £14600 pa plus fees

More information on: http://www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/site/1/5/Vacancies

There is a substantial interest in developing autonomous systems, as part of
remote surveillance of the environment. Such systems need to possess
computational intelligence, be able to sense the environment, collect
information and perform path planning. Applications are invited for a fully
funded PhD position on algorithmic and theoretical aspects of target
tracking systems. This PhD project will focus on the development of novel
Monte Carlo methods (particle filtering) for estimation and control
purposes. Between the problems that will be investigated are motion
estimation of a single and multiple objects from a large amount of sensor
data. The proposed research will investigate novel particle filtering
methods to solve non-linear, non-Gaussian, estimation/control problems where
current techniques are inadequate. Immediate applications relate to path
planning control of Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAVs), but more generally the
work is relevant to control of vehicles and robots in uncertain situations.
UAVs are remotely controlled or self-piloted aircraft that carry different
sensors and are equipped with communication facilities. The work will go
beyond the usual realm of Particle Filtering techniques. There are three
strands to the work: estimation in closed loop environments; the use of
particles to solve optimal stochastic control problems related with path
planning and the combination of particle filters with derivative-free methods.
The studentship will be supervised by Dr Mila Mihaylova (Lancaster
University) and it is anticipated that the student will be based at
Lancaster University, offering a highly collegiate and stimulating
environment for research career development as well as undertaking a
programme of original research.

GABI HEGERL, School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh, UK

Anthropogenic climate change: Using the past to learn about the future

Abstract: Estimates of the probability density function of climate
sensitivity can be derived from temperature records over the 20th
century and the last Millennium. This information can then be used
extreme temperature and precipitation can be used to evaluate climate
model simulations.

JONTY ROUGIER, Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol, UK

Statistical climate reconstruction using a GCM

Abstract: We use a general circulation model (GCM) to reconstruct
North American climate 6ka BP, in the mid-Holocene. The model is
calibrated to reconstructed temperature where we have it, and provides
a physically consistent method for extrapolating the reconstruction to
other spatial locations, and other climate variables such as
precipitation and GDD5. This work is part of the PalaeoQUMP project.

BREAK FOR TEA/COFFEE

ANDREW PARNELL, Statistics Department, University College Dublin, Ireland

Title: Bayesian palaeoclimate reconstruction

Synopsis: Changes in pollen samples taken from lake sediment can tell
us about past climate. Sophisticated statistical techniques are
required as there is considerable uncertainty in both dating the
pollen and in quantifying the relationship between pollen and climate.

Pre-registration is recommended. You can register by contacting Carole
This statistician role for our Belgium client is a little different than
a standard one, in that it is not producing a statistical analysis
report for a submission to the FDA. Instead the role is providing
support to a high profile scientific publication concerned with end
point survival data in the Cardio Vascular therapeutic area. There is a
huge database from a long and complex trial and it is thought the
analysis for the initial scientific publication will give rise to 20 or
30 other publications following on from it. You will work alongside an
external steering committee made up of 14 academics who are specialists
in their field and will have to reason with and present your findings to
them. As well as carrying out the statistical analysis, you will also be
required to carry out SAS programming in order to produce simple SAS
outputs in support of your analysis. This is a unique opportunity to
work alongside some very talented people and add a new dimension to your
statistician skills.

We require a very experienced statistician with a significant
background working for pharmaceutical and CRO companies, who can work
autonomously. You must have previous Cardio Vascular therapeutic area
experience and have worked with complex end point survival data before.
You must also be capable of programming listings and tables in SAS.
Lastly, you must be capable of presenting your findings to the external
committee and able to reason with them on your findings.

For the right person there is a 6 months contract available on hourly
rates which will be commensurate with your level of experience. Phone
Justin Gimblett at Key People on: +44 (0)1727 817 617 for more details.

Hello, I was wondering whether anyone could help me with a medical stats
question:

I would like to perform conditional regression analysis in SPSS for stratum-
matched data, i.e. when cases and controls are not paired. The number of
cases in each stratum are counted and then the appropriate number of
controls is picked for each stratum. The strata are 7.

I am aware that conditional LR is based on the differences between case-
control pairs and is done through the “Multinomial Logistic regression” option in
SPSS, however here I have stratum matching and I have not performed such
conditional LR before. Any ideas how I can obtain a conditional LR for stratum-
matched cases and controls in SPSS?

Thank you all

Dear ALL,
I'm comparing two ranking methods concerning 180 persons.
The two methods seem apparently different.
But when I perform Kendall's tau, the P-value is 0 (bilateral or unilateral), (meaning that there is an agreement between both methods )
Even when I try simulation, I seems like very large difference, p-vale is still close to 0.

Does the statistical community is aware of this problem?
What is the alternative to Kendall tau (apart Spearman)?
Does anyone know reference articles where such discussions are carried out?

Thank in advance.

Hello everyone,

I am interested in looking at the Bayesian form of the log linear model. But I
have some questions why in the first place would one want to do this? Is there
R code or SAS code currently available to do this? If so please let me know.
Any references would be greatly appreciated.
How do you compare the regular frequentist approach to the Bayesian approach
(AIC and BIC??)
