> Anybody know about this? http://www.juicedhybrid.com/Prius_Electric_Mode_Only_p/evmode.htm I had purchased and installed something similar a couple of years ago from a company in floriday for my 2004 Prius. It basically allows you to use the cruise control stalk to fake the computer into thinking you have the EV Mode button installed which is simply an input into the computer. This EV Mode allows you to bypass the catalytic converter warmup and the engine to not start unless you deplete the battery to about 20% or exceed 34 mph or exceed some high amp draw for more acceleration. It might give you few miles of pure EV. But when the enging starts eventually you will need to charge the battery back up and use gasoline to do it. So you really aren't >saving< any gas. Only during the time that you use it. I found that it really wasn't that useful, except to maybe move the car out of the garage or from front to back, so that it wouldn't start. But if your quick and can do it within the minute then the engine wouldn't start anyway. And if the engine starts up after the battery is depleted or speed or power demands it, you are bypassing the catalytic converter and cylinder head warmup (via the stored coolant) so your emissions will be worse then just allowing the computer to do it's thing and let the engine warm. It only runs for about a minute or two to do this anyway and then shuts off. When not in EV mode you can run up to just about any speed with the electric if you are carefull. The engine will need to spin after about 42mph but still without fuel and spark if the power demand is low. Therefore after all of that, I uninstalled it because there was also the concern that repeated discharges beyond the regular charge window would void the warranty. Re: All electric Prius> Anybody know about this?
>http://www.juicedhybrid.com/Prius_Elec.....etc It is a step towards Plug in Prius. 2004 and up Priuses have an EV-only mode, but in the US, the button to activate it is omitted. There are instructions on the Internet how to add one, or you can use this product. Some solutions from some vendors will conflict with their solutions to other problems. I did it myself with pins from "autobeyours.com" EV mode probably voids the battery warranty. I have a short hill to go up when I leave work, then it's all downhill. In a traffic jam. I can often drive to the top of the hill and coast down, and then let the ICE warm up while I am waiting at the last light before the highway. |
